Assessing Completeness of Cancer Treatment Data from an Academic Medical Center's Tumor Registry Through Comparison to the Central Registry.

BACKGROUND: Researchers often rely on hospital tumor registry data to provide comprehensive cancer therapy information. The purpose of this study was to determine the completeness of treatment information found in the abstracted records of patients seen at an academic medical center located in a rural Midwestern state. APPROACH: The cohort included 846 Iowa residents diagnosed with a single malignant tumor of the female breast, colon/rectum, lung, pancreas, or prostate in 2017-2018 with an abstract recorded by the academic medical center and at least 1 other hospital. Treatment/no treatment a

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Treatment of Critical Limb Ischemia: A National Perspective.

Background Recent guidelines have emphasized the use of medical management, early diagnosis, and a multidisciplinary team to effectively treat patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI). Previous literature briefly highlighted the current racial disparities in its intervention. Herein, we analyze the trend over a 14-year time period to investigate whether the disparities gap in CLI management is closing. Methods and Results The National Inpatient Sample was queried between 2005 and 2018 for hospitalizations involving CLI. Nontraumatic amputations and revascularization were identified. Utilizat

No Racial Differences Found in Access to Biologics: A Population-Based Study of Psoriasis Patients in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Conflicting evidence exists regarding the role of race in access to biologics for patients with psoriasis. OBJECTIVE: To compare biologic use among adult and pediatric United States psoriasis patients of different racial backgrounds. METHODS: Population-based study of US psoriasis patients using the 2003 to 2018 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). RESULTS: Among 31,525,500 adults and children with psoriasis (weighted), 3,026,578 (9.6%) were on biologics. Among psoriasis patients, 27,464,864 (87.1%) self-identified as white, 2,033,802 (6.5%) self-identified as Black, 1,173,4

Why Did Black Soldiers Historically Have More Pneumonia Than White Soldiers in the U.S. Army?

Black U.S. Army soldiers had four times as much bacterial pneumonia as White U.S. Army soldiers during both the U.S. Civil War and World War I (WWI). Pneumonia case fatality rates were a third greater in Black soldiers during the U.S. Civil War, but were the same between the racial groups by WWI. During WWII, the use of antibiotics decreased bacterial pneumonia mortality rates 100-fold and apparently erased racial differences. Similar differences in bacterial pneumonia rates by racial group were observed in African colonial soldiers of the French and British Armies during WWI. Pneumonia rates …

Monday-Enhanced CEASE Program for Underserved Ethnic Minorities: a Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Due to the persistence of tobacco-related health disparities in the U.S., there is a need for innovative strategies to reach the underserved ethnic minority populations who are most at risk. As contemplations for health behavior modification tend to surge on Mondays, we explored the feasibility and effect of a Monday-enhanced smoking cessation program on quitting outcomes in a low-income ethnic minority community. AIMS: To compare a Monday-enhanced with a standard Communities Engaged and Advocating for a Smoke-free Environment (CEASE) program and understand the overall experiences

Racial Inequality in the Prevalence, Degree, Extension, and Permeation of Incarceration in Family Life.

The prevalence, consequences, and unequal distribution of parental and own incarceration in the United States are well documented. However, much of our knowledge of the reach of the carceral state into family life is focused on incarceration of a parent, romantic partner, or child, to the exclusion of other important relationships. Using data from the Family History of Incarceration Study, a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults (N = 2,029), this study introduces novel descriptive measures that provide a more comprehensive picture of the demography and racially unequal distribution o

Persistent Disparities: Trends in Rates of Sheltered Homelessness Across Demographic Subgroups in the USA.

CONTEXT: Homelessness is a public health crisis affecting millions of Americans every year, with severe consequences for health ranging from infectious diseases to adverse behavioral health outcomes to significantly higher all-cause mortality. A primary constraint of addressing homelessness is a lack of effective and comprehensive data on rates of homelessness and who experiences homelessness. While other types of health services research and policy are based around comprehensive health datasets to successfully evaluate outcomes and link individuals with services and policies, there are few su

Racial, Ethnic, and Regional Disparities in Cocaine-Involved Overdose Deaths in the US, 1999-2020.

BACKGROUND: Social inequalities among underrepresented communities may lead to higher overdose mortality involving cocaine use. We assessed the temporal trends in cocaine-involved overdose mortality rate in the US by race, ethnicity, and geographic region from 1999 to 2020. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among adults in the US using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database (1999 to 2020). To identify cocaine-involved overdose decedents, we used the International Classification of Diseases Code, 10th Re

County-Level Relationships Between Foreign-Born Residents, Latinos, Immigration Enforcement, and Child Maltreatment Report Rates in the United States, 2015-2018.

U.S. Latino and foreign-born populations show lower child maltreatment report (CMR) rates despite their low socioeconomic positions, perhaps due to protective cultural factors within these populations. However, discriminatory Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities may attenuate such protection. We examined how ethnic and foreign-born compositions and local ICE activities were associated with community CMR rates, overall and within racial/ethnic groups (i.e., White, Black, Latino), and how these associations changed over time. We used national county-level data linking multiple ad

Racial and ethnic disparities in nasopharyngeal cancer with an emphasis among Asian Americans.

Despite the overall decreasing incidence, nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) continues to cause a significant health burden among Asian Americans (AAs), who are a fast-growing but understudied heterogeneous racial group in the United States. We aimed to examine the racial/ethnic disparities in NPC incidence, treatment, and mortality with a specific focus on AA subgroups. NPC patients aged ≥15 years were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 18 (1975-2018). AAs were divided into Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Hawaiian, Japanese, Laotian, Korean, Cambodian, Indian/Pakista

Geographically dispersed zoonotic tuberculosis in pre-contact South American human populations.

Previous ancient DNA research has shown that Mycobacterium pinnipedii, which today causes tuberculosis (TB) primarily in pinnipeds, infected human populations living in the coastal areas of Peru prior to European colonization. Skeletal evidence indicates the presence of TB in several pre-colonial South and North American populations with minimal access to marine resources- a scenario incompatible with TB transmission directly from infected pinnipeds or their tissues. In this study, we investigate the causative agent of TB in ten pre-colonial, non-coastal individuals from South America. We reco

The Role of Discrimination Experiences in Postrape Adjustment Among Racial and Ethnic Minority Women.

Although recent studies have linked discrimination frequency among Black and Latinx individuals to PTSD symptom severity, to our knowledge, these associations have yet to be examined among a diverse sample of recent rape survivors. The current secondary analysis of existing data examined the role of discrimination experiences in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depression, and alcohol and drug problems among a racially and ethnically diverse sample of recent rape survivors. Participants were 139 Black (48.2%; n = 67), American Indian (18.7%; n = 26), Hispanic (15.1%; n = 21), an

Race, ethnicity, and gender reporting in North American clinical trials for BCG-unresponsive non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.

INTRODUCTION: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Revitalization Act of 1993 established guidelines for the inclusion of racial/ethnic minorities and women in clinical research. However, the reporting rate of such patient demographic data in clinical trials for BCG-unresponsive non-muscle invasive bladder cancer is not well characterized. METHODS: We identified published clinical trials of all phases (I -III) for BCG-unresponsive non-muscle invasive bladder cancer conducted in the US and/or Canada. We calculated the proportion of studies reporting patient gender and race/ethnicity, tabula

Acceptability of a Mobile-Health Living Kidney Donor Advocacy Program for Black Wait-Listed Patients.

Marked racial disparities exist in rates of living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT). The Living Organ Video Educated Donors (LOVED) program is a distance-based, mobile health program designed to help Black kidney transplant wait-list patients advocate for a living donor. This study reported on the acceptability outcomes to aid in future refinements. Participants were randomized to LOVED (n = 24, mean age = 50.9 SD (9.2) years), male = 50%) and usual care groups (n = 24 (mean age 47.9 SD (10.0), male 50%). Four LOVED groups completed an eight-week intervention that consisted of six online vi

Asynchronous and Synchronous Delivery Models for Home-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation: A SCIENTIFIC REVIEW.

PURPOSE: To review the principles, advantages, and disadvantages of asynchronous and synchronous delivery models of home-based cardiac rehabilitation (HBCR). METHODS: We reviewed recently published systematic reviews and other publications of randomized studies of asynchronous and synchronous HBCR to assess principles, outcomes, and limitations of those delivery methods compared with center-based cardiac rehabilitation (CBCR). SUMMARY: While most studies prior to 2016 involved asynchronous HBCR approaches to care, studies since 2016 have included asynchronous or synchronous delivery models.

Differential Association of HIV Funding With HIV Mortality by Race/Ethnicity, United States, 1999-2017.

OBJECTIVE: Federal funds have been spent to reduce the disproportionate effects of HIV/AIDS on racial/ethnic minority groups in the United States. We investigated the association between federal domestic HIV funding and age-adjusted HIV death rates by race/ethnicity in the United States during 1999-2017. METHODS: We analyzed HIV funding data from the Kaiser Family Foundation by federal fiscal year (FFY) and US age-adjusted death rates (AADRs) by race/ethnicity (Hispanic, non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, and Asian/Pacific Islander and American Indian/Alaska Native [API+AI/AN]) from Cent

Using registry data to characterize the incidence and causes of blindness in Oregon.

In the United States, there is no reliable data to describe the prevalence of eye diseases leading to visual impairment and little active surveillance to address this knowledge gap. Data that is readily available from many state blind registries may provide helpful information on trends and causes of blindness. We analyzed new registrations with the Oregon Commission for the Blind (OCB) and Oregon State Department of Administrative Services (DAS) from 1961 to 2016 for causes of and trends in blindness. Persons with blindness self-refer into the OCB registry and the Oregon State Department of A
