Sports ethics: New challenges for new times.

Sports must protect athletes from physical and psychological harm, while ensuring fair competition. Sport ethics includes improving athlete safety (preventing injuries, supporting concussion management), athlete well-being (mental performance), and human rights (freedom from discrimination). Increasingly, freedom from sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, or questioning status of citizenship, marriage, or class are ethical objectives of all those involved in sports. Sports ethics is situated within a broader sphere of bioethics as the interdisciplinary concerns of athlete wellbeing are prio…

Lived Experience, Research Leadership, and the Transformation of Mental Health Services: Building a Researcher Pipeline.

In recent years, investment in participatory research methods within mental health services research has grown. Participatory efforts are often limited in scope, however, and attention to research leadership is largely absent from discourse about stakeholder involvement in the United States. This Open Forum calls for investment in building a pipeline of researchers with significant psychiatric disabilities and intersecting lived experiences frequently studied in public sector services research, including homelessness, incarceration, comorbid health problems, structural racism, and poverty. A s…

The health disparities research industrial complex as structural violence: insights from the U.S. South.

The U.S. South experiences some of the most severe and persistent health inequities in the nation, shaped by a long history of racialized structural violence in housing, healthcare, education, and the criminal legal system. At the same time, the region remains a critical site of resistance, rooted in deep traditions of community organizing that have reshaped national understandings of social injustice. Against this backdrop, the Partnership for Southern Equity launched its Community-Informed Research for Change, Learning, and Equity (CIRCLE) initiative to address an enduring and underexamined

Making Correctional Health Care Education Integral to Health Care Training.

In this commentary, the authors summarize the history of structural racism within the correctional system; discuss the impact of incarceration on individual, family, and community health; and suggest methods to expand didactic curricula and direct clinical experiences within carceral and post-release settings.

Skin Color Representation in Thyroid Textbooks: Lack of Imaging Diversity.

INTRODUCTION: Racial and ethnic disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease have been identified with various contributing factors, including delays in diagnosis and care, limited access to health care, and potential underlying provider bias. Individuals from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds, particularly those with darker skin tones, have been historically underrepresented in medical textbooks; this underrepresentation contributes to the development of inherent racial biases in medical trainees when considering certain diagnoses. The potential impact that educatio

The racial pandemic experienced by Black American men: Cognitive-behavioral and structural implications.

However, attempts to explain the psychosocial reactions of Black American (BA) men to racial injustice and treat CT must be considered in the context of the current and past structural environments in which they live. The purpose of the present study was to obtain in-depth, thick description of two related factors: BA males' perceptions of injustice during the racial pandemic and the consequent psychosocial implications for theory and treatment. The role of stereotypical information on medical judgements for black and white patients.

THIS ARTICLE USES WORDS OR LANGUAGE THAT IS CONSIDERED PROFANE, VULGAR, OR OFFENSIVE BY SOME READERS. The new generation of direct-acting antivirals has improved dramatically the rates of cure for chronic hepatitis C. Yet, evidence shows that racial groups are deemed more often ineligible for hepatitis C treatment, despite no clinical evidence supporting differential treatment for Black and White patients. One possible explanation has to do with providers' racial biases. This investigation sought to explore medical students' racial stereotypes (Study 1, N = 171) and the role of stereotypical c

Hispanics, Mental Health, and Discriminating Policies: Brief Report.

Hispanics, the largest minority group in the United States, are a heterogeneous group that contains a large portion of immigrants from Latin America. Recently, anti-immigrant policies and anti-Hispanic discriminatory practices have heightened at state and national levels. These policies and practices serve to endanger the mental health of Hispanics and play a major role in health care disparities. Positive correlations have been found between chronic discrimination and depression as well as other comorbid conditions, such as anxiety and substance use, and physical disorders. This report provid

Unconscious Racial Bias May Affect Dentists' Clinical Decisions on Tooth Restorability: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

METHODS: In this single-center cross-sectional survey, 57 dentists were given a clinical scenario in combination with a patient's relevant clinical photographs and radiographs depicting either a Black or White patient presenting with a decayed tooth and associated symptoms of irreversible pulpitis. Explicit bias was measured through a questionnaire, which evaluated participants' course of treatment, strength of recommendation, and their perception of patients' dental cooperativeness. Implicit bias was evaluated through brief implicit associate tests. RESULTS: Recommendation for root canal tre

Race Making in a Penal Institution.

This article provides a ground-level investigation into the lives of penal inmates, linking the literature on race making and penal management to provide an understanding of racial formation processes in a modern penal institution. Drawing on 135 days of ethnographic data collected as an inmate in a Southern California county jail system, the author argues that inmates are subjected to two mutually constitutive racial projects--one institutional and the other microinteractional. Operating in symbiosis within a narrative of risk management, these racial projects increase (rather than decrease)

An Antiracism Community-Based Participatory Research With Organizations Serving Immigrant and Marginalized Communities, Including Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders in the United States Pacific Northwest: Qualitative Description Study With Key Informants.

BACKGROUND: Asian American (AA) community leaders, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NH/PI) community leaders, and allies in the United States Pacific Northwest expressed concern that there are families and children from AA communities and NH/PI communities who experience and witness acts of xenophobia and racism. This can cause racial trauma. The long-time practice of aggregating AA and NH/PI data contributes to erasure and makes it challenging to advance health equity, such as allocating resources. According to AAPI Data's long-awaited report in June 2022, there are over 24 million AAs and 1…

Studying multiracial adolescents' racial self-categorization(s): Conceptual, methodological, and analytic recommendations.

Routine inflammatory and nutritional markers may help stratify progression risk in metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma during immunotherapy-based treatment. This single-center retrospective study included 237 patients who received first-line toripalimab plus axitinib therapy. Ten indices were natural-log transformed and standardized, and domain-based selection yielded a compact composite inflammatory score (COMP-IS), which was internally validated using 1000 full-pipeline bootstrap resamples. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). During a median follow-up of 19.84 mo

Towards a Post-Brown Life Course Framework.

Gerontological research on racial desegregation in U.S. schools and late-life cognition among older Black adults generally finds that desegregation is associated with improved cognitive outcomes. However, this scholarship omits two historically documented forces that shaped the post-Brown v. Board of Education (1954) landscape: (1) segregationist pushback, the institutional policies and systematic responses that directly undermined racial desegregation (e.g., mass displacement of Black educators, expansion of school policing in newly integrated schools), and (2) Black autonomy, the traditions

Firearm violence and racial capitalism: A conceptual framework for understanding the persistence and prevalence of gun violence in the United States.

Firearm violence is a leading cause of death in the United States and is marked by profound racial and socioeconomic disparities. Existing research has identified many of the conditions that make interpersonal firearm violence more likely, and intervention research shows that firearm regulation, targeted policing, and community-based programs can reduce harm. Yet firearm violence remains high, persistent, and unequally distributed. This article develops a racial capitalism framework to explain that persistence. Building on structural racism approaches, it asks how the conditions associated wit…
