OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of radiation dose and dose rate on radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice.
METHODS: Twenty-four C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into a control group (n=6) and an irradiation group(n=18). The irradiation group was further assigned to 3 subgroups according to the whole lung radiation with 15 Gy at 400 cGy/min, 20 Gy at 400 cGy/min and 20 Gy at 100 cGy/min, while the control group received sham-irradiation. Radiotherapy when used in head and neck cancer treatment can produce side effects in patients such as the trismus. If allowed to progress trismus can become so severe that the patient becomes debilitated due to lack of nutrition. Furthermore, trismus and limited oral access present a challenge to the clinician for dental treatment. This article describes a simple and cost-effective appliance for management of trismus.

The study of the influence of UVC-254 nm radiation on spectroscopic and calorimetric properties of human serum albumin in aqueous solutions was conducted. This radiation did not only accelerate aging of albumin solutions but also caused the other qualitative changes. The dose dependent effect on conformational restructuring and thermal stability of albumin for exposure periods from 10 to 60 min was shown. The differences in response to UVC-irradiation between non-defatted and fatty acid-free albumins were found.

Low-intensity electromagnetic field (12.6 cm, 2375 MHz, power density 1 mW/cm2) produced retrograde amnesia in the rat passive avoidance test. No effect was registered of microwave irradiation on the open field behavior and the pain sensitivity. Functional activity of the m-cholinergic receptors decreased, but their number increased in the brain cortex. It is suggested that cholinergic system plays an important role in the effects of electromagnetic field on memory processes.
