Tolerance of the Brachial Plexus to High-Dose Reirradiation.

PURPOSE: To study the tolerance of the brachial plexus to high doses of radiation exceeding historically accepted limits by analyzing human subjects treated with reirradiation for recurrent tumors of the head and neck. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Data from 43 patients who were confirmed to have received overlapping dose to the brachial plexus after review of radiation treatment plans from the initial and reirradiation courses were used to model the tolerance of this normal tissue structure. A standardized instrument for symptoms of neuropathy believed to be related to brachial plexus injury was ut

Eribulin combined with radiation therapy in a young patient re-irradiated for a new lesion of breast cancer.

Eribulin is widely used in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, with a manageable toxicity profile. This aggressive disease often requires systemic and local treatments, comprising surgery or radiotherapy. However, eribulin is usually discontinued during radiation therapy due to the lack of data concerning the safety of this combination, especially in the setting of repeat locoregional radiation therapy. Our patient was diagnosed with ER positive invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast initially treated by surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy. She then recei

Behavior of the electron spin resonance signals in X-ray irradiated human fingernails for the establishment of a dose reconstruction procedure.

The retrospective dosimetry that follows accidental X-ray exposure is becoming more significant for improving radiation diagnosis and treatment. We investigated the dosimetric properties of electron spin resonance (ESR) signals in X-ray irradiated fingernails under conditions that resemble realistic situations. We collected fingernails from 12 Japanese donors between the ages of 30 to 70. The sampled fingernails were utilized for X-ray irradiation, mechanical stimulation and background measurements. We also collected 10 toenails from one of the donors to evaluate their differences from fingern

Orazipone, a locally acting immunomodulator, ameliorates intestinal radiation injury: a preclinical study in a novel rat model.

PURPOSE: Intestinal radiation injury (radiation enteropathy) is relevant to cancer treatment, as well as to radiation accidents and radiation terrorism scenarios. This study assessed the protective efficacy of orazipone, a locally-acting small molecule immunomodulator. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Male rats were orchiectomized, a 4-cm segment of small bowel was sutured to the inside of the scrotum, a proximal anteperistaltic ileostomy was created for intraluminal drug administration, and intestinal continuity was re-established by end-to-side anastomosis. After three weeks postoperative recovery, t

Tolerance of the small bowel to therapeutic irradiation: a focus on late toxicity in patients receiving para-aortic nodal irradiation for gynecologic malignancies.

OBJECTIVE: The recently published Quantitative Analysis of Normal Tissue Effects in the Clinic (QUANTEC) recommends dose constraints for acute small-bowel toxicity but does not fully address dose constraints for late small-bowel toxicity and the maximum dose tolerance of the small bowel. Radiation oncologists in practice frequently face a challenge when deciding what maximum point dose to accept in a patient's treatment plan. Given this lack of guidance for maximum radiation dose tolerance on the small bowel, we performed a literature search on the topic. METHODS: We searched PubMed for Engli

Evaluating growth and physiological responses of Moringa peregrina and Moringa oleifera to elevated CO₂ and UV-B radiation in open-top chambers for climate resilience.

Climate change poses complex and unpredictable challenges to the ecosystems and agricultural systems. Anthropogenic activities have increased CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere and changes in ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. These environmental changes severely impair crop growth and production of crops, particularly in sensitive species. Therefore, evaluating the combined effects of eCO2 and UV-B radiation is essential for predicting climate change on crop systems and ecosystem stability. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the tolerance of two Moringa species (Moringa oleifera and Mo

Digital subtraction sialography: technique, advantages and results in 107 cases.

Sialographic examinations with the digital subtraction technique were performed in 107 salivary glands (90 parotid and 17 submandibular) of 99 patients. Diagnostic and technical advantages of the digital imaging and subtraction for sialography were investigated. Superior quality enabled detailed imaging of the entire ductal system. Reduced radiation exposure, short examination time and almost painless examinations with good patient tolerance proved to be the major advantages of digital subtraction sialography as a diagnostic tool.

Nanoparticle-Based Radiosensitization in Breast Cancer: A Multimodal Approach to Therapy and Immune Regulation.

Radiotherapy is essential for breast cancer treatment, especially after lumpectomy. Its effectiveness, however, is hindered by tumor resistance, which causes recurrence and poorer outcomes. In the last decade, nanoparticle-mediated radiosensitization has emerged as a promising strategy to improve radiotherapy in breast cancer. Metal nanoparticles, such as gold, silver, platinum, and bismuth, increase the localized radiation dose through secondary electron emission and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Polymeric, liposomal, and hydrogel nanocarriers deliver radiosensitizers directly to tu

Investigating the impact of long term exposure to chemical agents on the chromosomal radiosensitivity using human lymphoblastoid GM1899A cells.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of chronic low-level exposure to chemical carcinogens with different modes of action on the cellular response to ionising radiation. Human lymphoblastoid GM1899A cells were cultured in the presence of 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide (4NQO), N-nitroso-N-methylurea (MNU) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for up to 6 months at the highest non-(geno)toxic concentration identified in pilot experiments. Acute challenge doses of 1 Gy X-rays were given and chromosome damage (dicentrics, acentric fragments, micronuclei, chromatid gaps/breaks) was scored. Chronic exposure

Broad-spectrum sunscreens offer protection against urocanic acid photoisomerization by artificial ultraviolet radiation in human skin.

Cis-urocanic acid (UCA) has been indicated as an important mediator of ultraviolet (UV)-induced immunosuppression. In this study we describe a rapid, noninvasive method for the determination of the protective capacity of various sunscreens against the UV-induced isomerization of trans-UCA into its cis form. For this purpose we applied sunscreens prior to in vivo exposure of human volunteers with single or repeated broadband UVB irradiations of 100 mJ per cm2. We found significant but different levels of protection against UCA photoisomerization by all sunscreens that correlated with the sun pr

Pulse exposure to ionizing radiation elicits rapid changes in cellular radiosensitivity.

A linear electron accelerator, operated in a recurrent chopped mode, was used for time-resolved investigation of split-dose radiation recovery in 3 mammalian cell lines in vitro. The time intervals separating the sequential radiation exposures in this study ranged from fractions of a second to a few minutes. The primary pulse brought about rapid, synchronous oscillations of cellular radiosensitivity giving rise to a tetraphasic, W-shaped time-dependent profile whose first phase was accomplished by a large decrease of cell survival. Only the last phase correlated with sub-lethal damage repair d

Late effects of radiation on the eye and ocular adnexa.

A clinically useful classification system is suggested that can be used in prospective trials to evaluate the effects of radiation on the visual system. We review radiation-induced pathophysiological and clinical changes of the various ocular structures as well as dose-response data and management of ocular complications. The rationale for the classification scheme chosen is also discussed.

The relationship between 'early' and 'late' radiation-induced skin reactions as seen in two strains of mice that differ in radiosensitivity.

The acute skin reaction and time-course of skin contraction following graded single doses of X-rays were studied in CBA and C57B1 mice, in order to elucidate the relationship between 'early' and 'late' skin damage in strains that are known to differ in radiosensitivity. A dose-dependent acute reaction and rapid skin contraction was noted 0-50 days after irradiation in both strains, and both parameters of response were greatest in the C57B1 mice. Following this initial shrinkage there was a slight relaxation, which was again more evident in the C57s. A gradual, continuous, dose-independent cont

The radiosensitivity of chromosomes of rabbit lymphocytes.

Dicentrics were induced in human and rabbit lymphocytes in vitro by exposure to X-irradiation. The yields were compared with data reported in the literature. To elucidate the reasons for the different findings we have evaluated the parameters for the different models by maximum likelihood methods. From this analysis it can be concluded that the earlier claim of Bajerska and Liniecki [1] that both species have the same radiosensitivity must be discounted, and that their similarity was due to the abnormally low values these investigators observed in irradiated human lymphocytes.

Effects of long-term UV-exposure and plant sex on the leaf phenoloxidase activities and phenolic concentrations of Salix myrsinifolia (Salisb.).

The accumulation of flavonoids on the leaf surface is a well-characterized protective mechanism against UV-B radiation. Other protective mechanisms, such as the induction of antioxidative enzymes and peroxidase-mediated lignification may also be important. The effects of UV-B radiation have mainly been considered in short-term studies, whereas ecologically more relevant long-term field studies are still rare. Here we examined the effects of long-term exposure to enhanced UV-B radiation on the activities of two antioxidative enzymes, polyphenol oxidase (PPO; EC 1.10.2.2 and EC 1.14.18.1) and gu

Conformation therapy: a method of improving the tumour treatment volume ratio.

Restriction of the volume irradiated is a fundamental tenet of radiotherapy. Conventional two-dimensional treatment results in geometrically shaped high-dose regions, the sizes of which are defined by the greatest dimensions of a tumour mass. Conformation therapy permits a tumour to be considered for treatment as multiple short segments, and the radiation field to be tailored to fit each segment accurately. This paper demonstrates that this results in a reduction of the treatment volume of between 10% and 80%, depending on the shape of the tumour. Also, it is shown that a greater proportion of
