Diagnosis of odontogenic keratocysts and non-keratocysts using edge attention convolution neural network.

BACKGROUND: The study's objective was to develop an automated method for a histopathology recognition model for odontogenic keratocysts (OKC … microscopic images at a 40X magnification were taken from 54 OKC, 23 Dentigerous cysts (DC), and 20 Radicular cysts. RESULTS: The model was trained using both RGB and canny edge-detected images. The model gave a good accuracy of 96.8%, which is suitable for real-time. Histopathological images are better analyzed through textural features. The proposed edge atte …

Pediatric Oral Pathology: Odontogenic Cysts.

Cysts encountered in the head and neck typically arise from epithelium that would normally be programmed to form teeth or tooth-supporting structures (odontogenic epithelium). These cysts come with a confusing array of similar-sounding names and histopathologic features that are sometimes shared between conditions. Here we describe and contrast the relatively-common lesions: hyperplastic dental follicle, dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst, buccal bifurcation cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, glandular odontogenic cyst, and the less-common gingival cyst of the new-born and thyroglossal duct cyst. The…

[Nasopalatine duct cyst].

The nasopalatine cyst is the most common epithelial and non-odontogenic cyst of the maxilla. It is of embryological origin. It is different from a radicular cyst. The diagnosis is based on radiographic and histological data. The treatment is enucleation. The surgical approach depends on the size of the cyst and its anterior or posterior extension. Excision must be total to avoid relapse which may occur beyond 5 years. Long-term follow-up is essential.

Inverted heart-shaped, interradicular radiolucent area of the anterior maxilla.

A variety of odontogenic, nonodontogenic, and inflammatory conditions may occur between the roots of the maxillary canine and lateral incisor. A list of differential diagnoses might include: odontogenic keratocyst, central giant cell granuloma, odontogenic myxoma, primordial cyst, lateral periodontal cyst, ameloblastoma, and radicular cyst. A diagnosis of globulomaxillary cyst should be noticeably absent from the list, however, and should be considered only after clinical radiographic, and microscopic correlation has effectively ruled out all other possibilities.

Spinal synovial cysts: pathogenesis, diagnosis and surgical treatment in a series of seven cases and literature review.

This study is designed based on the retrospective analysis of patients treated in the Neurosurgical Department of two major hospitals and review of the literature. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of surgery and address controversial issues in the treatment of symptomatic lumbar intraspinal synovial cysts. Spinal juxtafacet cysts (synovial and ganglion cysts) are a rare cause of low back and radicular leg pain. Although the relevant reports in the international literature are increasing, the controversy about conservative versus surgical treatment and the need for concomitant

Odontogenic Cysts - An Overview.

This article aims to discuss the clinical features, radiological assessment, histopathology and management of a variety of odontogenic cysts. It also highlights the reclassification of odontogenic keratocysts to keratocystic odontogenic tumours.

Intraspinal synovial cysts: 10-year experience at the Ochsner Clinic.

OBJECT: Although synovial cysts commonly involve the joints of the extremities, they are also found in the spinal canal. When symptomatic, they produce signs and symptoms consistent with nerve root and spinal cord compression. In this report the authors review the clinical presentations, radiological studies, and operative findings in 28 patients with intraspinal synovial cysts treated surgically at the Ochsner Clinic between 1988 and 1998. METHODS: The medical records and radiological studies obtained in 28 patients (31 intraspinal synovial cysts) were analyzed. Twenty-nine (94%) of the cyst

Light microscopic study of periapical lesions associated with asymptomatic apical periodontitis.

The purpose of the study has been to evaluate the degree of chronic inflammation in tissues surrounding the apex of the tooth root in patients with apical periodontitis in the remission phase. The material included 37 apical granulomas and radicular cysts obtained as a result of apiectomy, and 20 teeth which were removed together with the focus of the periapical inflammation. Routine histological techniques, as well as the immunofluorescent and immuno-chemical methods were used to examine the material. Despite the absence of clinical symptoms in 23 of 57 cases, the morphological signs of chron…

The diagnosis could evoke a surgical ciliated cyst mimicking the radicular cyst but the patient has no previous history of trauma or surgery in the maxillofacial region. It could also be an unusual radicular cyst in which the stratified squamous epithelium was destroyed by inflammation and replaced by a respiratory epithelium o …

Ultrastructure of odontogenic jaw cysts.

The epithelial ultrastructure of six radicular cysts, four follicular cysts, and five keratocysts was studied with special attention to the epithelium-connective tissue junction. Inflammation was found to cause widened interepithelial cell spaces which often harbored inflammatory cells in the radicular and follicular cysts. The characteristic structures at the epithelium-connective tissue junction (plasma membrane, lamina lucida and basal lamina) were not affected by inflammation. Fibrous structures were seen to connect the basal lamina to the underlining collagenous connective tissue. The ker…

Spontaneous resolution of an intraspinal synovial cyst.

We report a case of lumbar facet joint synovial cyst at L5-S1 with clinically significant radicular pain diagnosed by means of MR imaging. This cyst spontaneously resolved, as determined on follow-up MR images obtained 18 months later. The patient's clinical symptoms substantially improved after conservative medical treatment.

Assessment of conformity between clinical (radiological) and histopathological diagnoses of chronic inflammatory periapical lesions treated with apicoectomy. Clinical and histopathological diagnoses of periapical lesions. Research article.

OBJECTIVES: Periapical inflammation is one of the most common pathologies within the jaws, leading to the destruction of periodontal ligaments, bone resorption and the formation of periapical granulomas or radicular cysts. The final diagnosis can be made only on the basis of histopathological examination. The aim of the study was to assess the conformity between clinical and histopathological diagnosis of inflammatory periapical lesions treated with apicoectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The case histories of 52 patients subjected to surgical treatment at the Clinic of Conservative Dentistry wit…

A deep learning approach based on YOLO v11 for automatic detection of jaw cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Jaw cysts are frequent radiolucent lesions in dentistry that can present diagnostic difficulties due to their similar radiographic appearance. This study aimed to develop an AI-based detection and classification system for jaw cysts using the YOLO v11 deep learning model on panoramic radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 311 panoramic images (211 cystic, 100 normal) were labeled and augmented. The YOLO v11 Small model was trained in both multi-class (distinguishing between dentigerous cysts [DCs], odontogenic keratocysts [OKCs], and radicular cysts [RCs]) and single-class …

Analysis of silver stained nucleolar organizing regions in odontogenic cysts and tumors.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate the probable differences in cell proliferation index of odontogenic cysts and tumors by means of a comparative silver stained nucleolar organizing region (AgNOR) quantification. STUDY DESIGN: This descriptive cross-sectional study was done on archival paraffin blocks (n = 62), consisting of 10 odontogenic keratocysts, 10 dentigerous cysts, 10 radicular cysts, 10 conventional ameloblastomas, 10 adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, 10 calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors and 2 ameloblasic carcinomas. RESULTS: The mean AgNOR count of odontogenic …
