Radiation dermatitis.

Even in this era of modern radiotherapy, injuries associated with the medical and industrial use of radiation devices will continue to pose a difficult problem for the reconstructive surgeon. It must be borne in mind that the single most serious hazard to surgery in irradiated tissue is the lodgement of bacteria in tissue rendered avascular by the radiation and the secondary necrosis from the infection itself. The basic principles of wound management must be augmented by thorough knowledge of the use of well-vascularized muscle and musculocutaneous flap to provide adequate, blood-rich, soft-ti

Radiotherapy-Induced Skin Fibrosis: Pathophysiology, Emerging Therapeutics, and the Role of Dermatology.

Radiotherapy-induced skin fibrosis is a chronic progressive complication of radiotherapy that impairs function, aesthetics, and quality of life yet remains under-recognized and undertreated. While acute cutaneous toxicities are typically transient, chronic sequelae such as fibrosis, lymphedema, atrophy, telangiectasia, and dyspigmentation reflect uncontrolled tissue remodeling driven by sustained inflammation and fibroblast activation. Ionizing radiation generates reactive oxygen species that initiate vascular and epithelial injury, trigger immune infiltration, and perpetuate a cycle of transf

Bibliometric analysis and visualization of research trends in radiation dermatitis in the past twenty years.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore the most influential countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, keywords, and trends in the study of the mechanism and treatments of radiation dermatitis (RD) from 2003 to 2023 using bibliometric analysis. METHODS: The literature associated with RD was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, only articles and reviews in English were included. Individual articles were reviewed to identify the authorship, published journal, journal impact factor, institution and country of origin, and year of publication. RESULTS: A total of 6,453 auth

Fluoroscopic radiation induced skin reactions: Radiation dermatitis and radiation-induced morphea.

Given the rise of radiation based medical procedures, cutaneous radiation reactions are increasing in frequency. Diagnosis of fluoroscopic radiation-related cutaneous injuries are challenging, as patients are often unaware of or cannot recall radiation exposure. It is important to maintain clinical suspicion of radiation induced skin injuries in patients with persistent morpheaform areas and localized areas of dermatitis or ulceration. Several cutaneous radiation induced injuries have overlapping clinical presentations. Histopathology may be required to help differentiate between these distinc

Accelerated Healing from Severe Radiation Dermatitis Using Noncontact, Low-frequency Ultrasound-assisted Saline Wash Therapy.

Radiotherapy (RT) is a modality for cancer management that frequently causes critical injury to tissues adjacent to the targeted cancer site. Acute radiation dermatitis (RD) is one of the most common adverse effects of RT and may lead to secondary infection, disfigurement, and discontinuation of therapy. The authors report the efficacy of a multidisciplinary collaboration between radiation oncology, dermatology, and wound care teams in the management of severe, acute RD. This case report describes the use of noncontact, low-frequency ultrasound (NCLFU)-assisted saline wash therapy leading to a
