The impact of shoulder pathology on individuals with distal radius fracture.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder pathology can occur concurrently with a distal radius fracture (DRF) but few studies have examined this population. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to expand the understanding of the impact of shoulder pathology on individuals with DRF. STUDY DESIGN: Mixed Methods Design. METHODS: A total of 45 participants with a DRF were categorized into a DRF only (n = 29) and shoulder pathology concurrent with DRF (SPCDRF) (n = 16) groups. Quantitative data gathered included demographics, Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand, Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia-11, Visu

Bone Microarchitecture and Distal Radius Fracture Pattern Complexity.

Distal radius fractures (DRFs) occur in various complexity patterns among patients differing in age, gender, and bone mineral density (BMD). Our aim was to investigate the association of patient characteristics, BMD, bone microarchitecture, and bone strength with the pattern complexity of DRFs. In this study, 251 patients aged 50-90 years with a radiologically confirmed DRF who attended the Fracture Liaison Service of VieCuri Medical Centre, the Netherlands, between November 2013 and June 2016 were included. In all patients fracture risk factors and underling metabolic disorders were evaluated…

The effect of social deprivation on fragility fracture of the distal radius.

INTRODUCTION: Social deprivation is associated with many adult fractures including distal radius fractures but the mechanisms for this are unclear. The aim of this study was to identify if social deprivation was associated with falls risk, mechanism of injury or osteoporosis in patients with a fragility fracture of the distal radius. METHOD: Details of all patients aged 50 years and over presenting with a radiographically confirmed fracture of the distal radius over a one year period, were prospectively recorded. Patients were sent a questionnaire pack including questions regarding place and …

The shaft fractures of the radius and ulna in children: current concepts.

The incidence of forearm shaft fractures in children has increased in recent years. They are challenging to treat and they can result in several long-lasting complications. The treatment of children's fractures needs to be individualized to their needs. Nonoperative care will be satisfactory for young, preschool children and it is primarily treatment in stable fractures of children at every age. Injury mechanism must be understood to perform appropriate closed reduction. Immobilization using a long-arm cast needs to be focused against the deforming muscle forces - in particular those that rota

[Manifestation of Dupuytren nodules following fracture of the distal radius].

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence of post-traumatic development of Dupuytren nodules in distal radius fractures treated operatively. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 2 prospective randomised studies for operative treatment of distal radius fractures, the formation of Dupuytren nodules was registered. One of the exclusion criteria was a pre-existing Dupuytren's disease at the date of trauma. In addition to the notification of the development of Dupuytren nodules, signs of a complex regional pain syndrome were registered as well as the wrist function, level of pain and grip st…

Fracture of the distal radius: epidemiology and premanagement radiographic characterization.

OBJECTIVE: Fractures of the distal radius are common and frequently encountered by the radiologist. We review the epidemiology, classification, as well as the concept of instability. Salient qualitative and quantitative features of the distal radius fracture identifiable on the routine radiography series are highlighted. We conclude with a synopsis of descriptors that are of greatest utility to the clinician for treatment planning and that should be addressed in the radiology report. CONCLUSION: A detailed understanding of the intricacies of the distal radius fracture is necessary for the rad

Plate fixation of distal radius fracture and related complications.

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures are common. In cases where surgical treatment is needed, volar plates can be used to obtain stable, long-lasting fixation. The design of these plates has continually improved over the years, but complications remain a problem. PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the types of complications that occur with different types of volar plates with a view towards preventing them. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The emergency department at our hospital saw 524 patients with distal radius fractures between 2006 and 2008. Some of these were treated surgically wi…

Ipsilateral olecranon and distal radius fracture: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Concomitant ipsilateral olecranon and distal radius fracture are rare injuries. Their clinical presentation is unusual and investigation and management is poorly described. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a 55-year-old woman patient who fell off sustaining a concomitant distal radius and olecranon fracture in the same extremity. On examination, there was gross swelling of the proximal and distal forearm and no neurovascular deficit. Radiographs confirmed distal radius and olecranon fracture. Patient was treated with open reduction and anatomic locking plate for olecranon and a

[The malunited distal radius fracture - early or late correction?].

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND/GOAL: Despite the fact that corrective osteotomy for malunited distal radius fractures is widely accepted, the optimal timing is still a matter of controversy. The presented study compares the clinical and radiological results of early vs. late corrective osteotomy at the distal radius to evaluate the influence of timing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prospectively studied 34 consecutive patients with extraarticular malaligned fractures of the distal end of the radius who underwent corrective osteotomy. Early correction was performed in 14 patients (10 -women and 4 men with …

Analysis of publication bias in the literature for distal radius fracture.

PURPOSE: Distal radius fractures are the most commonly treated fracture, and their management remains complex. We aimed to evaluate the presence of publication bias in the literature on distal radius fracture management and to identify specific study variables that may influence the reporting of positive outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review on all available journal articles to find primary articles reporting on the management of distal radius fractures. Data collected included the direction of study outcome (positive, neutral, and negative) and various study characteristics inc…

Rupture of flexor tendons as a complication of a distal radius fracture.

Two cases are reported of flexor tendon rupture of ulnar side fingers as a complication after distal radius fracture. One was associated with a prominent distal volar lip of fracture site, the other with a relatively volarly displaced ulnar head due to the dorsally tilted distal radius due to malunion. These may be unique cases of flexor tendon rupture with conservatively treated patients.

The evolution of distal radius fracture management: a historical treatise.

Distal radius fractures (DRFs) have been a common affliction for millennia, but their treatment is a more recent development resulting from human erudition. Although immobilization has served as the only available treatment for most of our history, many advances have been made in the management of DRFs over the last century as orthopedics has grown. Yet the topic remains hotly contested in the literature and, given the frequency of the injury, research continues to focus on it. This article traces the evolution of DRF treatment to provide a context for the future.
