As zinc status may influence susceptibility to colon cancer, we examined the effect of dietary zinc deficiency on the proliferation of epithelial cells (colonocytes) in the large bowel of rats. When compared to feed-restricted rats, those with zinc deficiency showed a significant reduction in proliferation in the distal colon as assessed by accumulated metaphase arrest and crypt cell production rates in vivo. A comparative toxicity study on macrolide antibiotics, rokitamycin (TMS-19-Q) and josamycin, was performed in male rats. These drugs were given orally for 1 month at daily doses of 250, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg. No animals died in the study. The gubernaculum, which has an important role to play in testicular descent, is richly supplied by the genital branch of the genitofemoral nerve through its scrotal attachment. We investigated a possible role of endogenous cholecystokinin-pancreozymin (CCK-PZ) in the mechanism of exocrine pancreatic secretion after excluding pancreatic juice from the intestine in rats. Fasting plasma immunoreactive CCK-PZ was determined in normal rats, in rats with pancreatic duct ligation, and in sham-operated rats. Using silver impregnation and electron-microscopic techniques, nerves have been demonstrated in rat axillary, cervical and inguinal lymph nodes, and their distribution was investigated. With the electron microscope, vesicle-containing varicosities or terminals are demonstrated in close proximity to reticulum cells, lymphocytes, plasmablasts and mature plasma cells. Nerves supplying the blood vessels possibly differ from those supplying stromal or lymphocytic elements.

To evaluate the mode and intestinal sites of action of chlorthalidone on Ca transport, balance and flux studies by the Ussing technique were performed in rats fed a low Ca diet throughout the experiment to stimulate Ca absorption. The pharmacokinetics in blood of the major metabolites of hexobarbital (HB), 3'-hydroxyhexobarbital (OH-HB) and 3'-ketohexobarbital (K-HB) were studied in rats. In addition urinary excretion of OH-HB and K-HB and 1,5-dimethylbarbituric acid (DMBA) was determined. Half-lives of OH-HB and K-HB were slightly longer than that of the parent drug.
