Previous studies have suggested the presence of numerous catecholamine-containing cells in both the central ganglia and peripheral tissues of Aplysia, but they often offered conflicting or incomplete accounts of numbers, locations, and morphologies. The current study combines aldehyde-induced histofluorescence and tyrosine hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity together with confocal microscopy to provide details of these cells. Approximately 35-50 neurones in the cerebral ganglia, 4-8 neurones in the pedal ganglia, 5 neurones in the buccal ganglia, and numerous small fibres in various nerve trunks

Spinal neuronal responses to stimulation of cardiopulmonary sympathetic afferent (CPS) fibers were studied in 25 alpha-chloralose-anesthetized cats. Eighty-two neurons located in the T7-T9 segments were tested for responses to electrical stimulation of CPS fibers. Activity of 55 neurons was altered; 37 were excited, 10 were inhibited, and 8 were both excited and inhibited. All 55 cells with CPS input also responded to stimulation of somatic receptors and the left greater splanchnic nerve (SPL). Somatic receptive fields were primarily located on the upper portion of the abdomen and left lower r

OBJECTIVES: Altered respiratory kinematics are thought to contribute to primary muscle tension dysphonia (pMTD) symptoms such as vocal effort, fatigue, and discomfort. Although speech-language pathologists (SLPs) often comment on respiratory patterns during voice evaluations, it remains unclear which visual-perceptual cues they rely on for clinical decision-making and how accurate these patterns are for identifying patients with pMTD. As such, this study aimed to (1) identify the respiratory patterns SLPs perceive in pMTD and (2) evaluate their diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing pMTD from v

Objective. Ultrasound (US) stimulation of the spleen has shown promise in activating anti-inflammatory neural reflexes for treating conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and sepsis. However, clinical translation remains challenging due to respiratory-induced motion, which risks off-target stimulation and often requires manual adjustment. While US imaging offers key advantages, tracking reliability is reduced by acoustic window loss and occlusion. This study introduces a robust tracking framework that enhances US-based motion monitoring via adaptive sensor fusion.Approach. A wearable accelero

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a critical diagnostic tool for assessing upper gastrointestinal disorders, yet it can induce significant discomfort due to gag reflexes and pain. For patients with a higher risk for sedation, topical lidocaine spray at the hypopharynx is an alternative method. Yet, no standardized protocol exists regarding the optimal waiting period between administering lidocaine spray and commencing EGD. This study investigates the optimal waiting time between the application of topical lidocaine spray and the initiation of EGD to enhance patient comfor

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, also known as carcinomatous meningitis, is defined by spreading of neoplastic cells to the meninges and ventricles, and is a form of cancer dissemination. In this case, a patient with inflammatory bowel disease had developed a neoplastic process that spread to the meninges. A 49-year-old woman developed an abdominal pain, and was diagnosed the same month with Crohn's disease, complicated with intestinal perforation, for which she was hospitalized. Pathological examination revealed acute phase-terminal ileitis. She undergone many hospitalizations during which she

It is known that the sudden increases in blood pressure associated with autonomic dysreflexia in people with spinal cord injury (SCI) are due to a spinally mediated reflex activation of sympathetic vasoconstrictor neurons supplying skeletal muscle and the gut. Apart from visceral inputs, such as those originating from a distended bladder, there is a prevailing opinion that autonomic dysreflexia can be triggered by noxious stimulation below the lesion. However, do noxious inputs really cause an increase in blood pressure in SCI? Using microelectrodes inserted into a peripheral nerve to record s

The case of a 72-year-old woman presenting sensory neuropathy and anti-Hu antibodies is reported. She was admitted in November 1995 with a one year history of sensory neuropathy. Her first symptoms were painful numbness and dysesthesias in both feet. She experienced progression of the sensory symptoms affecting upper limbs, and clumsiness of gait. One month before admission she complained of diminished strength in both hands. The neurologic examination showed anicocoric fixed pupils, with no reaction to light; convergence miosis was evident in the right eye (Argyll-Robertson pupil). In the low

It has been established previously that natural-sounding vocalization is evoked by excitation of the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG). It is not known, however, whether the motor output for such vocalization is invariant, or whether it is influenced by afferent discharge. We have investigated, in the unanesthetized precollicular decerebrate cat, the patterns of upper airway and respiratory EMG activity evoked by microinjection into the PAG of the excitatory amino acid D,L-homocysteic acid (6 to 40 nmol in 30-200 nl), under conditions of varied pulmonary and upper airway afferent input. BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the effects of melatonin on diarrhea and visceral hypersensitivity in rats with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) and to explore its potential mechanisms through modulation of the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway. METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were used to establish an IBS-D model through a combination of chronic and acute stress. The rats were randomly divided into four groups: healthy control (HC), IBS-D, IBS-D + melatonin 5 mg/kg (M-L), and IBS-D + melatonin 10 mg/kg (M-H), with six rats in each group. Visceral sensitivi

OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is related to damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier function. Based on the Mast cell (MC)/Tryptase/Protease-activated receptor-2 (PAR-2)/Myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) pathway, this study explored the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on IBS-D rats and its possible mechanism of protecting the intestinal mucosal barrier.
METHODS: The IBS-D rat model was established by mother-offspring separation, acetic acid enema, and chronic restraint stress. The efficacy of EA on IBS-D rats was evaluated by observing t

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is predominantly manifested as respiratory distress. There are growing reports of extrapulmonary clinical manifestations of COVID-19 in addition to the respiratory symptoms. COVID-19 has been associated with the thyroid function through Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the central mechanism through Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), and direct replication of the virus.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old woman presented with complaints of palpitation and abdominal pain for three days. Because the symptoms were worsening, she was brought to

The organization of the central neuronal circuitry that produces vomiting was explored by mapping the distribution of c-fos protein (Fos)-like immunoreactivity (FLI) as a monitor of functional activity. The brainstem and spinal cord were examined in cats administered multiple emetic drugs (cisplatin, lobeline, protoveratrine, naloxone, apomorphine) or control saline injections. Some animals were decerebrated, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated to avoid possible Fos expression induced by sensory feedback or fluid depletion during vomiting. Fictive vomiting was identified in these animals by
