Psychophysiological outcome of cognitive, behavioral and psychophysiologically-based treatments of agoraphobia.

Psychophysiological process and outcome phenomena were analyzed to examine differential temporal patterns within and across cognitive, behavioral and physiologically-based treatments of agoraphobia. Eighty-eight severe and chronic agoraphobics with panic attacks (DSM-III) were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: Paradoxical Intention, Graduated Exposure or Progressive Deep Muscle Relaxation Training. Protocol therapists, whose treatment integrity was objectively monitored, conducted 12 two-hour weekly sessions. All subjects received programmed practice instructions concurrent with th

Psychogenic habit cough: review and case reports.

Psychogenic habit cough--a condition that can be debilitating if it extends over a period of years--has been described in both pediatric and adolescent populations, but not in adults. The authors review the cases of 4 adult patients with this condition, review the available pediatric/adolescent literature, and make suggestions for the direction of future research. In some cases, psychogenic habit cough in adults can be successfully treated with a combination of psychotherapy, relaxation therapy, and speech therapy.

T1ρ imaging in premanifest Huntington disease reveals changes associated with disease progression.

BACKGROUND: Imaging biomarkers sensitive to Huntington's disease (HD) during the premanifest phase preceding motor diagnosis may accelerate identification and evaluation of potential therapies. For this purpose, quantitative MRI sensitive to tissue microstructure and metabolism may hold great potential. We investigated the potential value of T1ρ relaxation to detect pathological changes in premanifest HD (preHD) relative to other quantitative relaxation parameters. METHODS: Quantitative MR parametric mapping was used to assess differences between 50 preHD subjects and 26 age- and sex-matched

Role of neuronal voltage-gated K(+) channels in the modulation of the nitrergic neurotransmission of the pig urinary bladder neck.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: As nitric oxide (NO) plays an essential role in the inhibitory neurotransmission of the bladder neck of several species, the current study investigates the mechanisms underlying the NO-induced relaxations in the pig urinary bladder neck. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Urothelium-denuded bladder neck strips were dissected and mounted in isolated organ baths containing a physiological saline solution at 37 degrees C and continuously gassed with 5% CO(2) and 95% O(2), for isometric force recording. The relaxations to transmural nerve stimulation (EFS), or to exogenously applied a

Mega-doses of behaviour therapy for treatment-resistant agoraphobics.

This was a pilot project set up to test the feasibility of effectively and inexpensively treating agoraphobic patients who had not responded to adequate trials of behaviour therapy (and other therapy) in the past. We employed a quantitatively intensive program of exposure therapy, calisthenics and muscular relaxation, and have explained the rationales for the choice of each treatment. The results were gratifying in four of the five patients, with follow-up to three years. This pilot project enabled us to set up a cost-effective treatment for all forms of agoraphobia which is as efficient as ot

The relative efficacy of imaginal and in vivo desensitization in the treatment of agoraphobia.

Claims have often been made that in vivo procedures are generally superior to imaginal approaches in the clinical management of anxiety and avoidance behavior. Such claims seem unwarranted in that the relevant clinical research appears only to have involved either flooding or rapid exposure techniques. The aim of the present study was specifically to examine the relative efficacy of imaginal and in vivo desensitization in the clinical management of debilitating phobia. Six agoraphobic women participated in the study which employed a multiple-baseline single-subject methodology. Severity of pho

Single-blind trial addressing the differential effects of two reflexology techniques versus rest, on ankle and foot oedema in late pregnancy.

This single-blind randomised controlled trial explored the differential effects of two different foot reflexology techniques with a period of rest on oedema-relieving effects and symptom relief in healthy pregnant women with foot oedema. Fifty-five women in the third trimester were randomly assigned to one of the three groups: a period of rest, 'relaxing' reflexology techniques or a specific 'lymphatic' reflexology technique for 15 min with pre- and post-therapy ankle and foot circumference measurements and participant questionnaire. There was no statistically significant difference in the cir

Testosterone depletion contributes to cyclosporine-induced chronic impairment of acetylcholine renovascular relaxations.

The immunosuppressant drug cyclosporine causes nephrotoxicity mainly via alterations of renovascular reactivity. This study investigated whether this effect of cyclosporine is modulated by the male gonadal hormone testosterone. The endothelium-dependent and -independent relaxations evoked by acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside, respectively, were evaluated in phenylephrine-preconstricted isolated perfused kidneys obtained from sham-operated, castrated, and testosterone-replaced castrated (CAS+T) male rats in the absence and presence of cyclosporine. Compared with sham-operated values, short

Longitudinal muscle dysfunction in achalasia esophagus and its relevance.

Muscularis propria of the esophagus is organized into circular and longitudinal muscle layers. Goal of this review is to summarize the role of longitudinal muscle in physiology and pathophysiology of esophageal sensory and motor function. Simultaneous manometry and ultrasound imaging that measure circular and longitudinal muscle contraction respectively reveal that during peristalsis 2 layers of the esophagus contract in perfect synchrony. On the other hand, during transient relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), longitudinal muscle contracts independently of circular muscle. Rece

Viscoelastic hydrogels regulate adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells for nucleus pulposus regeneration.

Low back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide, often attributed to intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration with loss of the functional nucleus pulposus (NP). Regenerative strategies utilizing biomaterials and stem cells are promising for NP repair. Human NP tissue is highly viscoelastic, relaxing stress rapidly under deformation. However, the impact of tissue-specific viscoelasticity on the activities of adipose-derived stem cells (ASC) remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the role of matrix viscoelasticity in regulating ASC differentiation for IVD regeneration. Viscoela

Hydroxyurea does not reverse functional alterations of the nitric oxide-cGMP pathway associated with priapism phenotype in corpus cavernosum from sickle cell mouse.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that has been associated with priapism. The role of hydroxyurea, a common SCD therapy, in influencing the nitric oxide (NO)-cGMP pathway and its effect on priapism is unclear. To investigate the effect of hydroxyurea treatment on smooth muscle relaxation of corpus cavernosum induced by stimulation of the NO-cGMP pathway in SCD transgenic mice and endothelial NO synthase gene-deficient (eNOS-/-) mice, which are used as model of priapism associated with the low bioavailability of endothelial NO. Four-month-old wild-type (WT, C57BL/6), SCD transgeni

The effectiveness of non-pharmacological pain management in relieving chronic pain for children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: There is accumulating evidence that recurring pain symptoms in children are becoming a serious health concern. Children and adolescents who suffer from ongoing pain have negative outcomes not only to their physical health, but also to their emotional and spiritual health. Furthermore, recurrent pain in children may also cause a number of other negative consequences to the child, the family and society. Thus, a non-pharmacological approach to reduce the pain is vital to help children having better quality of life. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review is to determine the best av
