Meeting the commitments of the ICPD Programme of Action to young people.

Some of the commitments nations have made in international agreements, notably in the ICPD Programme of Action (1994) and the resolution of the UN Committee on Population & Development (2012), to young people include: realisation of the right to education and attainment of a secondary school education; delaying marriage beyond childhood and ensuring free and full choice in marriage-related decisions; exercise of the right to health, including access to friendly health services and counselling; access to health-promoting information, including on sexual and reproductive matters; acquisition of

Egg-laying hormone expression in identified neurons across developmental stages and reproductive states of the nudibranch Berghia stephanieae.

Neuropeptides play essential roles in coordinating reproduction. Egg-laying hormone (ELH) is conserved in genetic sequence and behavioral function across molluscs, where neuronal clusters secrete ELH to modulate and induce egg-laying. Here we investigated ELH in the nudibranch mollusc, Berghia stephanieae. ELH preprohormone gene orthologs, which showed clade-specific differences at the C-terminus of the predicted bioactive peptide, were identified in brain transcriptomes across several nudipleuran species, including B. stephanieae. ELH shares deep homology with the corticotropin-releasing horm

Understanding social work's role in abortion care: A comprehensive scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social workers have played a crucial role in abortion care for decades, addressing clients' diverse abortion care needs. Social workers have ethical duties to provide unimpeded access to information and supports to clients, in pursuit of social justice. This scoping review comprehensively synthesizes published literature on social work's role in abortion care. METHODS: The review adhered to Arksey and O'Malley's five-stage framework. The following databases were searched for literature published between 1973-2023: PsycINFO, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Social Work Abstracts, Social Services A

The prevalence of intimate partner violence against women diagnosed with infertility in China: a national cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) and infertility are significant global health and human rights concerns. Evidence has shown that infertile women face a higher risk of IPV, yet national-level data on its prevalence remain limited. This study aims to quantify the prevalence of IPV against infertile women in China and identify associated risk factors. METHODS: A national cross-sectional study was conducted in China from October 2021 to August 2022, using multistage stratified cluster sampling. Infertile women were recruited from 30 reproductive centers across ten provinces. A self-ad

A Qualitative assessment of adolescent-parent sex talk in Ghana.

Young people's views on sexuality in sub-Saharan Africa are poorly understood. We know little about what they think of their sexual upbringi … n about sex from multiple sources. Therefore, policies seeking to promote young people's sexual and reproductive rights in Ghana should pay close attention to what young people know about sex and how they know what they know, recognizing that their knowledge-seeking is part of human development and not inherently "bad".

Factors influencing access to and utilisation of youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Despite the global agreements on adolescents' sexual and reproductive health and rights, access to and utilisation of these services among the youth/adolescents remain unsatisfactory in low- and middle-income countries which are a significant barrier to progress in this area. This review established factors influencing access and utilisation of youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services (YFSRHS) among the youth in sub-Saharan Africa to inform programmatic interventions. METHODOLOGY: A systematic review of studies published between January 2009 and April 2019 using PubM

Assisted Reproductive Technology, Multiple Births, and Perinatal Outcomes in Taiwan from 2001 to 2020.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the Assisted Reproduction Act, implemented in 2007 in Taiwan to reduce the number of embryos to transfer, on the trends over time regarding the rate of multiple births, preterm delivery, low birth weight (LBW), and small for gestational age (SGA) among deliveries using assisted reproductive technology (ART). STUDY DESIGN: From the Birth Reporting Registry and the Assisted Reproduction Registry, we retrieved data of 4 016 530 live birth deliveries between 2001 and 2020; among them 71 000 (1.77%) were after ART. We calculated the rate of multiples and per

Culturally Responsive Sexual and Reproductive Health Education to Address HIV Risk Among African-Born Immigrant Women.

ObjectiveAfrican-born immigrants (ABIs) represent a growing demographic in the United States, constituting nearly half of the foreign-born Black population. They face distinct health challenges, with ABI women experiencing disproportionately high rates of HIV incidence. A critical factor contributing to this health disparity is limited sexual and reproductive health (SRH) literacy. The primary objective of the study was to pilot and evaluate an intervention that employed a culturally responsive, community-led approach to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education for HIV prevention among A

Predictors of Intimate Partner Violence Among Reproductive Age Group Women in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health and human rights issue globally, with a particularly high burden in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite this, evidence on the predictors of IPV in Mozambique remains limited. This study aimed to identify predictors of IPV among women of reproductive age in Mozambique using nationally representative data. METHODS: This study utilised secondary data from the 2022 to 2023 Mozambique Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). A total of 4454 women aged 15-49 years who responded to the domestic violence module were included. IPV was defined as

Developmental literacy and epistemic dignity as primary child protection: a developmentally staged, disability-inclusive public-health framework for preventing adverse childhood experiences.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), toxic stress, relational insecurity, and structural adversity are major public-health concerns for children and adolescents, but ACE evidence should not be treated as an individual diagnostic score or deterministic prognosis. This Hypothesis and Theory article proposes developmental literacy and epistemic dignity as linked upstream constructs for primary child protection. Developmental literacy is defined as developmentally staged and disability-inclusive neurobiopsychosocial knowledge and skills concerning bodies, emotions, stress, attachment, co-regulati

The impact of social determinants of health on infant and maternal health using a reproductive justice lens.

BACKGROUND: Rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admissions continue to rise in the United States (US). Social determinants of health (SDOH) are recognized as significant contributors to infant and maternal health, underscoring the need for use of research frameworks that incorporate SDOH concepts. The Restoring Our Own Through Transformation (ROOTT) theoretical framework is rooted in reproductive justice (i.e. reproductive rights and social justice-based framework) and emphasizes both structural and social determinants as root causes of health ineq…

Improving access to family planning for women with disabilities in Kaduna city, Nigeria: study protocol for a pragmatic cluster-randomized controlled trial with integrated process evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Globally, women with disabilities are less likely to have access to family planning services compared to their peers without disabilities. However, evidence of effective interventions for promoting their sexual and reproductive health and rights remains limited, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. To help address disparities, an inclusive sexual and reproductive health project was developed to increase access to modern contraceptive methods and reduce unmet need for family planning for women of reproductive age with disabilities in Kaduna city, Nigeria. The project use

Association between public health emergencies and sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, and early marriage among adolescent girls: a rapid review.

BACKGROUND: As COVID-19 continues to impact lives and livelihoods around the world, women and girls are disproportionately affected. Crisis situations and related response measures, such as lockdowns, school closures, and travel restrictions, often exacerbate the adversities and human rights violations faced by adolescent girls. We conducted a rapid review to synthesise evidence on the impact of public health emergencies (PHEs) related to gender-based inequalities among adolescent girls. METHODS: We systematically searched five major databases. Records were imported into the online screening

Access to sexual and reproductive health services for women living with HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean: systematic review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Systematic reviews show that women living with HIV (WLHIV) have high unmet sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs due to barriers to access sexual and reproductive health services (SRHS). In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), as of 2016, there were nearly one million WLHIV, but the existing evidence of their SRH needs comes from a few individual studies. This systematic review provides an overview of these women's needs to help define new and/or adapt existing public health strategies to the local context. This review synthesizes the evidence from the literature on the us

Tailored hormonal approach in women with premature ovarian insufficiency.

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is probably one of the most devastating diagnoses for women of reproductive age. The major implications for fertility, climacteric symptoms, and quality of life, the great impact of long-term consequences such as bone loss and cardiovascular health, and the lack of a coherent and shared clinical approach make the choice for the right hormonal therapy challenging. In this review we propose an integrated and patient-based hormonal approach for women with POI, from puberty to late reproductive age.

'New bottle, but old wine': from family planning to HIV/AIDS in post-Doi Moi Vietnam.

This paper begins with an observation that during the past two decades HIV/AIDS has emerged as a new public health priority in Vietnam and has commanded increasing attention and resources from both the government and the donor community. By juxtaposing HIV/AIDS with family planning, another social and health priority that preceded, and overlapped with, HIV/AIDS for a large part of the 1990s, we show two major gaps that have undermined both programmes. One is the lack of a strong civil society, that could have served as advocates for change, especially outside the government and the donor commu

Guillain-Barré syndrome involving reproductive system revealed on 18F-FDG PET/CT: a case report.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated acute inflammatory peripheral neuropathy. While it is well-established that its typical manifestations involve the peripheral nerves, it is noteworthy that involvement of the central nervous system and the reproductive system is exceedingly rare. Here we report the case of a 67-year-old man with GBS in whom the 18F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated systemic inflammatory hypermetabolism. The imaging revealed multifocal, heterogeneous high-activity along the nerve roots, cerebral cortex, hypothalamus, and medulla oblongata. Crucially, it also identified
