Bacterial biofilms pose persistent public health challenges, and although surface modification is a promising anti-biofilm strategy, environmentally friendly approaches remain limited. Here, we report a nanostarch-functionalized polydimethylsiloxane (NS-PDMS) membrane with potent anti-biofilm efficacy arising from physical topographical interference coupled with metabolism-associated adaptation in surface-attached bacteria. Corn-derived starch nanoparticles (∼200 nm), produced via tunable antisolvent precipitation, were thermally deposited onto PDMS, forming an interwoven porous topography tha

Intestinal flora (microbiota) have recently attracted attention among lipid and carbohydrate metabolism researchers. Microbiota metabolize resistant starches and dietary fibers through fermentation and decomposition, and provide short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) to the host. The major SCFAs acetates, propionate and butyrate, have different production ratios and physiological activities. Several receptors for SCFAs have been identified as the G-protein coupled receptor 41/free fatty acid receptor 3 (GPR41/FFAR3), GPR43/FFAR2, GPR109A, and olfactory receptor 78, which are present in intestinal epi…

In cases of sudden loss of hearing, it must be assumed that a microcirculatory disturbance is involved, on the basis of a vasospasm of the afferent blood vessels and a "sludging phenomenon" in the region of the distal end-arteries of the cochlea. The microcirculatory disturbance results in an impairment of the O2 concentration in the perilymph, which can bring about disturbances, which are usually of short duration, and reversible changes in metabolism and structure of the hair cells. For this reason the therapeutic objective should be a reduction in the blood viscosity and flow resistance, pl

Structural derivatization of known leads using the scaffold hopping strategy is a classic approach in pesticide discovery. However, the modificatory universality of lead skeletons profoundly influences the feasibility of this protocol. We herein report development of disulfaneyl oxadiazole bactericides involving β-carboline moieties. Derivative B18 is filtered out to exhibit excellent in vitro antibacterial properties with half-maximal effective concentrations of 0.47 mg/L, 1.72 mg/L, and 5.97 mg/L against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola, and Xanthomonas citri p

Carbohydrates are one of the most significant macronutrients in the human diet. They are necessary for energy metabolism and health. However, the prevalence and progression of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been associated with the intake of excessive refined sugars and carbohydrates. This paper provides an overview of the complex relationship between carbohydrates and CVD. Highlights include how simple sugars, starches, and fibers can affect the cardiovascular system. Excessive consumption of high glycemic index, and refined carbohydrates can lead to insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and c

Cost-effective and sustainable biomass-based materials are being explored as alternatives to formaldehyde-based adhesives. However, the direct application of pure biomass materials for bonding purposes does not yield satisfactory results. Graft copolymerization is a widely recognized method for chemical modification. In this study, a novel formaldehyde-free wood adhesive was synthesized through graft copolymerization using N-methylolacrylamide (NMA) and cassava starch (CS). The physical and chemical properties, reaction mechanisms, and bonding mechanisms of the adhesive were thoroughly investi

The effect of low and high viscosity hemodilution with plasma expanders on the extent of the cell free layer (CFL) width was analyzed in the microcirculation of the exteriorized cremaster muscle preparation of Sprague-Dawley male rats. Anesthetized animals were subjected to 40% hemodilution by blood volume, using 5% human serum albumin (HSA) or 6% Hetastarch (hydroxyethyl starch 670 kDa). Arterioles (n=5 for each treatment) were investigated. Mean arterial pressure, heart rate, vessel flow velocity and CFL width were measured at baseline and 5, 20 and 40 min post-exchange transfusion. BACKGROUND: Up to now hydroxyethyl starch preparations have frequently been used to compensate for volume deficits accompanying blood withdrawal during acute normovolemic hemodilution. This approach was questioned with respect to the current limitations for use of hydroxyethyl starch solutions imposed by the European Medicines Agency. Because crystalloids distribute evenly across the whole extracellular compartment, 80 % of the infused solution will be "lost" to the interstitial space. Thus, a physiological adjustment of blood loss caused by hemodilution with crystalloids alone (1:5 ratio) see

BACKGROUND: The rose is one of the most important ornamental flowers in the world for its aesthetic beauty but can be attacked by many pests such as aphids. Aphid infestation causes tremendous damage on plant tissues leading to harmed petals and leaves. Rose cultivars express different levels of resistance to aphid infestation yet the information remains unclear. Not only that, studies about the transcriptional analysis on defending mechanisms against aphids in rose are limited so far.
RESULTS: In this study, the aphid resistance of 20 rose cultivars was evaluated, and they could be sorted in

High pressure carbon dioxide (HPCD) treatment is currently considered as an attractive non-thermal process for preserving food. Industrial application of this technique requires, among others, systematic (quantitative) data on the inactivation of food relevant pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms, and in-depth information on the effect that the composition and the properties of a food matrix have on the inactivation efficacy. The first objective of this study, therefore, is to evaluate and compare the HPCD susceptibility of several food pathogens and spoilage microorganisms under the same tr

Salmonella enterica, a foodborne pathogen, poses a significant public health risk, particularly multidrug-resistant strains. Because antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is often linked to specific serotypes or clones, factors that shift Salmonella populations in feedlots can indirectly drive resistance. The study aimed to characterize the genomic diversity and clonal composition of Salmonella across cattle and the pen environment from a feedlot trial involving crossbred steers fed a high-starch or control diet combined with erratic or regular feeding management until harvest (168 to 222 days; herea

Dietary fiber can reduce insulin resistance, body weight, and hyperlipidemia depending on fiber type, water solubility, and viscosity. PolyGlycopleX(®) (PGX(®)) is a natural, novel water soluble, non-starch polysaccharide complex that with water forms a highly viscous gel compared to other naturally occurring dietary fiber. We determined the effect of dietary PGX(®) vs. cellulose and inulin on the early development of insulin resistance, body weight, hyperlipidemia, and glycemia-induced tissue damage in young Zucker diabetic rats (ZDFs) in fasted and non-fasted states. ZDFs (5 weeks old) were

Cassava is one of the most important crops in the tropics. Its industrial use for starch and biofuel production is also increasing its importance for agricultural production in tropical countries. In the last decade cassava biotechnology has emerged as a valuable alternative to the breeding constraints of this highly heterozygous crop for improved trait development of cassava germplasm. Cassava transformation remains difficult and time-consuming because of limitations in selecting transgenic tissues and regeneration of transgenic plantlets. We have recently reported an efficient and robust cas

We have shown previously that a high sucrose intake increases the background level of somatic mutations and the level of bulky DNA adducts in the colon epithelium of rats. The mechanism may involve either glucose or fructose formed by hydrolysis of sucrose. Male Big Blue rats were fed 30% sucrose, glucose, fructose or potato starch as part of the diet. Mutation rates and bulky DNA adduct levels were determined in colon and liver. The concentration of short-chain fatty acids and pH were determined in caecum, C-peptide was determined in plasma, biomarkers for oxidative damage and proliferation w

Probiotics are effective for improving poultry health. Probiotic Bacillus cereus strains are widely used to improve animal health by stimulating the immune system. In this study, we obtained a B. cereus 13 (BC13) strain that functions in acid, high-temperature, and bile salt resistance. It also degrades starch, cellulose, and other proteins. To better understand the probiotic effects of BC13, we added the strain to the diet of broilers and observed its effects. We found that BC13 significantly improved the growth performance of broilers. The levels of total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dis

In agriculture, instead of synthetic fertilizers, natural bio-inoculants can be used to increase growth and yield of crops. For this purpose, we report a thermophilic bacteria Klebsiella sp. strain PMnew, isolated from Paniphala hot spring. The strain was characterized and assessed for plant growth-promoting traits. Oryza sativa L. var Swarna (rice) seeds were inoculated with the strain to study the bacterization effect on vegetative and reproductive growth of rice plants. The results indicate that PMnew produces organic acids to solubilize phosphate (550.16 ± 0.04 µg/ml), fixes nitrogen, prod

Cellulose fiber sheets impregnated with saccharide capped-ZnO nanoparticles were used as bioactive materials for antibody immobilization. First, ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized in the presence of glucose (monosaccharide), sucrose (disaccharide) as well as alginic acid and starch (polysaccharides). The pine cellulose fibers were then modified by the obtained saccharide capped nanoparticles and further incorporated into the sheets. The presence of ZnO significantly improved the immobilization of the antibodies on the surface of the sheets. After rewetting the alginic acid-ZnO modified sheets
