Orexin/hypocretin plays a role in the response to physiological disequilibrium.

In the decade since the discovery that pathology of the orexin/hypocretin system is causative for the sleep disorder narcolepsy, considerable progress has been made in understanding the functional role of the neuropeptide. Two, apparently separate functions of orexin have emerged as a consensus from studies to date. The first is the effect on vigilance state boundaries, as exemplified by narcolepsy. Thus the absence of orexin severely limits the ability to maintain prolonged periods of wakefulness or sleep and also allows the unregulated appearance of cataplexy as sudden muscle weakness during

Disturbance of phasic chin muscle activity during rapid-eye-movement sleep.

In patients with Rett syndrome (RS), a peculiar type of disturbance in phasic chin muscle activity during rapid-eye-movement sleep (REMS) (e.g. an elevation of phasic inhibition index (PII) without an affection of tonic inhibition index (TII)) has been reported. The similar disturbance in REMS was reported not only in child patients with infantile spasms, severe myoclonic epilepsy in infancy (SMEI), severe nocturnal enuresis, and autism but also in adult patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Except for SMEI and PD, patients with the other four clinical entities including RS could express aut

Eye deviation in patients with one-and-a-half syndrome.

To understand malalignments of the visual axes in one-and-a-half syndrome, we measured eye positions in 4 patients with this syndrome under … itudinal fasciculus involvement, and contralateral eye deviation may result from paramedian pontine reticular formation involvement. Viewing a target may lead to a secondary deviation or adaptation of eye positions for fixation.

Dendritic reorganisation in the basal forebrain under degenerative conditions and its defects in Alzheimer's disease. III. The basal forebrain compared with other subcortical areas.

The distribution of the reticular neuronal type in the human brain and its involvement in both degeneration and dendritic reorganisation under the conditions of ageing, Korsakoff's disease (KD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease (PD) was comparatively investigated after Golgi impregnation. Reticular neurones are distributed throughout different areas along the brain axis. The cholinergic basal forebrain nuclei, i.e., the basal nucleus of Meynert, the nucleus of the diagonal band, and the medial septal nucleus form the most rostral part of this network of "open nuclei," which is

The sites of origin of serotoninergic afferent fibers in the trigeminal motor, facial, and hypoglossal nuclei in the rat.

The sites of origin of serotoninergic afferents in the trigeminal motor (Vm), facial (VII), and hypoglossal nuclei (XII) were studied in the rat by fluorescent retrograde labeling with Fluoro-Gold, in combination with immunofluorescence histochemistry for serotonin (5-HT). The results indicated: (1) The nucleus raphe magnus, nucleus raphe pallidus, and nucleus raphe obscurus contained 5-HT neurons projecting to the Vm, VII or XII. (2) The nucleus raphe dorsalis sends 5-HT fibres to the Vm and VII, but not to the XII. (3) The gigantocellular reticular nucleus pars alpha contained 5-HT neurons p

Interaction of respiration with coughing, feeding, vision and oculomotor control in fish.

Data on the interaction between respiration, coughing, feeding, vision and oculomotor control in fish have been analyzed. A self-contained respiratory rhythm generator in the brainstem reticular formation is, at times, interrupted by a coughing generator, which is partly autorhythmic and partly under vagal afferent control. A number of cranial muscles are shared by the respiratory and masticatory systems. Others are predominately allocated to one of these systems but are recruited by the other under heavy loading conditions. The effect of retinal image displacements caused by respiration-induc…

Tegmentoreticular projections with special reference to the muscular atonia during paradoxical sleep in the cat: an HRP study.

Using the retrograde tracer technique with horseradish peroxidase (HRP), attempts were made to determine the cells of origin and the descending pathway of the tegmentoreticular projections in order to give an anatomical substrate for the physiological phenomenon of the postural atonia observed during paradoxical sleep (PS) in the cat. The HRP was injected into various parts of the pontomedullary reticular formation (RF) including the caudal raphe nuclei, nucleus (n.) reticularis gigantocellularis (Gc), n. reticularis magnocellularis (Mc), and other pontomedullary structures adjacent to the Mc.…

A neural network approach to the acoustic startle reflex and prepulse inhibition.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is the normal suppression of the startle reflex when an intense stimulus is preceded by a weak non-startling prest … utput patterns. Additional requirements included (a) a low threshold at or below the caudal pontine reticular formation, (b) signal amplification in the inhibitory pathway and (c) prolongation of activity in the inhibitory pathway. On the grounds of the most appropriate output patterns of the simulations, we propose a mechanism of sustained activation in the PPTg due …

Preoperative diagnosis of mucinous gastric adenocarcinoma by endoscopic ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to investigate the characteristic features of mucinous gastric carcinoma on endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and to demonstrate the usefulness of EUS in the preoperative diagnosis of this disease. METHODS: Twelve patients with mucinous gastric carcinoma who underwent EUS examination between April 1984 and April 1995 were enrolled in this study. All patients subsequently underwent surgery. Histopathologically, tumors were classified according to the mucin content (high or moderate) and the glandular formation of the tumor cells (well or poorly differenti

Morphological differences between the lesser and the greater omenta in albino rats.

BACKGROUND: Publications report that all mammals have two omenta, namely, lesser omentum and greater omentum. Basically, these organs, which share the same name except for the adjective "lesser" or "greater," should not differ from each other. However, no clear description of the structure of the lesser omentum, as well as comparative morphological analysis between the lesser and greater omenta have been found in the literature, which necessitates a thorough investigation. Therefore, the aim of our study was to analyze the morphofunctional differences between the greater and lesser omenta in a

Alzheimer's disease with widespread presence of Lewy bodies.

Progressive mental deterioration associated with parkinsonism was observed in a 68-year-old patient in the senile period. Pathologically, evidence of senile changes was obtained consisting of degeneration of the neurons and numerous senile plaques with classical and perivascular types. Further, neuronal degeneration in the form of Lewy bodies was evidently observed in the hypothalamus, substantia nigra et innominata, locus caeruleus of the vagus nerve, some nuclei in the reticular formation of the brainstem and neurons in the cerebral cortex. The clinical and pathological manifestations were t…

[Pathomechanism of pain in vertebral column diseases].

The pathological mechanism of pain in vertebral column diseases is discussed in accordance with the theory of Melzack and Wall taking into account both systems of pain sensation control at the spinal level and reticular formation level. The action of pain mediators is discussed as well. The main pathogenetic factors are: compression, stretching and ischaemia. Other factors, functioning particularly at the cervical spine level are, most frequently, developmental anomalies in the occipito-cervical area and faulty posture assumed during occupational work, as well as injuries which may be remote i…

Neurophysiological and Neuroanatomical Background of Spasticity: Surgical Implication for Dorsal Rhizotomy in Cerebral Palsy.

Spasticity arises from the exaggeration of the monosynaptic reflex, attributed to the loss of inhibitory influences from descending supraspi … of disorders and the potential irreducibility of this vicious circle. Understanding the role of the reticular formation, its afferent projections, and efferent pathways is essential for comprehending circadian tone variations and the variability in clinical presentations among patients. The mechanism of hypertonia in children with cerebral palsy is twofold: a neural …
