Twenty-one patients with vasomotor rhinitis, with no relevant allergens known, completed a special double-blind trial of beclomethasone dipropionate aerosol (BDA) and placebo intra-nasally. Each patient took 200, 400 and 800 mug BDA and placebo during four consecutive 2-week periods and in different sequences. The symptom scores of the last week of each period of nasal blockage, watery secretion and sneezing were significantly reduced by all doses of BDA as compared with placebo. A double-blind trial of Rynacrom (sodium cromoglycate) was conducted on 39 patients with perennial rhinitis. Improvement in nasal blocking was achieved at a statistical significance while sneezing and rhinorrhoea only reached the 0.1 level. During long term follow up, four patients who had previously required polypectomy for recurrent nasal polypi, had their condition resolved and subsequently controlled by Rynacrom therapy of one year's duration. Sixty percent of the original trial population are also being successfully maintained at minimal dosage.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a complex group of familial disorders with numerous clinical characteristics, with an incidence of 7 in 10000 born alive children. Ectodermal dysplasia affects structures of ectodermal origin like the skin and its appendages as well as other non-ectodermal structures. The most common sites of involvement are the defects in the skin, hair, teeth, nails and sweat glands,which are of ectodermal origin. Though the dermatologists and paediatricians often manage such cases, we report one case of ectodermal dysplasia presenting with atrophic rhinitis.
