Converting corn wet-milling effluent into high-value fungal biomass in a biofilm reactor.

Rhizopus microsporus was grown in an attached growth system using corn wet-milling effluent as a growth medium. This strain was chosen due to its ability to effectively degrade organic matter in corn wet-milling effluent and for its properties to produce significant levels of protein, chitin and chitosan. Fungal growth and organic removal efficiency were examined under both aseptic and non-aseptic conditions with and without nutrient supplementation. Plastic composite support (PCS) tubes, composed of 50% (w/w) polypropylene (PP) and 50% (w/w) agricultural products were used as support media. S…

Primary cutaneous mucormycosis: a diagnosis to consider.

Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is a deep fungal infection, mainly seen in diabetics and immunocompromised subjects. Rapid diagnosis and therapy are necessary to avoid fatal outcome. We describe the complete histopathological and microbiological studies of primary cutaneous mucormycosis in a 74-year-old man with several risk factors, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory acidosis, hemolytic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome and iatrogenic diabetes, due to corticosteroid therapy. He developed two cutaneous necrotic scars on his left leg. Mucormycosis was suspected and specime

Mucormycosis in an apparently normal host. Case study and literature review.

Mucormycosis refers to an opportunistic fungal infection most often related to predisposing conditions, especially uncontrolled diabetes. It can occur as a rapidly extending rhinocerebral infection presenting a high mortality rate. The same micro-organism has, however, been identified in benign paranasal infections in the absence of a general debilitating condition, suggesting that host factors are of the utmost importance in the outcome of paranasal mucormycosis.

Host-parasite relationship in opportunistic mycoses.

Aspergillosis and mucormycosis are opportunistic fungal infections that share several unique features. The etiologic agents of aspergillosis and mucormycosis are ubiquitous in the environment, but are opportunistic organisms and usually infect only patients predisposed by some underlying disease or treatment. These infections are typically characterized by hyphal tissue invasion and a predilection of the organism for blood vessel invasion with hemorrhage, necrosis, and infarction. Also, these organisms are not dimorphic, like the true pathogenic dimorphic fungi, as they grow both in the enviro

Outbreaks of Mucorales and the Species Involved.

The order Mucorales is an ancient group of fungi classified in the subphylum Mucoromycotina. Mucorales are mainly fast-growing saprotrophs t … tact (6.2%) or the ingestion (6.2%) of contaminated plant material. The most prevalent species were Rhizopus arrhizus and R. microsporus causing 57% of the outbreaks. The genus Rhizomucor was dominating in outbreaks related to contaminated air while outbreaks of Lichtheimia species and Mucor circinelloides were transmitted by direct contact. Outbreaks with …

Cutaneous and Pulmonary Mucormycosis in Rag1- and Il2rg-deficient Rats.

Immunodeficient rats are valuable in transplantation studies, but are vulnerable to infection from opportunistic organisms such as fungi. Immunodeficient Rag1- and Il2rg-deficient (RRG) rats housed at our institution presented with dark, proliferative, keratinized dermal growths. Histologic and PCR results indicated that the predominant organism associated with these lesions was fungus from the family Mucoraceae, mostly of the genus Rhizopus. The Mucoraceae family of fungi are environmental saprophytes and are often found in rodent bedding. These fungi can cause invasive opportunistic infectio…

Cutaneous mucormycosis of the upper extremity in an immunocompetent host: case report.

Cutaneous mucormycosis, a relatively common infection in immunocompromised patients, remains rare in the immunocompetent patient outside the setting of major trauma. We report a case of an immunocompetent patient who developed left upper extremity Rhizopus infection following arterial puncture. Treatment included surgical debridement, liposomal amphotericin B, and hyperbaric oxygen wound therapy; the patient recovered fully. A review of the literature of cases of upper extremity Mucor infection is included for context. We feel that a high degree of suspicion for Mucor infection is warranted in…

Zygomycosis Associated with HIV Infection and Liver Transplantation.

Zygomycosis is an increasing threat to patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Zygomycosis (formerly called mucormycosis) is the fungal infection with Mucor, Rhizopus, or other species that share a common morphology of large empty pauciseptate hyphae with rare random-angle branching and a collapsed "twisted ribbon" appearance. Morphology allows a specific diagnosis on frozen section or smear prior to growth and identification of the fungi in culture which makes it improtant because treatment is different than that for more common mycoses such as candidiasis and aspergillosi…

[Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis in the diabetic: a better known pathology in Tunisia].

This is a retrospective study including 17 patients with rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis diagnosed in a period of 16 years, between 1992 and 2007, in 8 men and 9 women. All patients were diabetic with ketoacidosis diabetes in 8 cases. Necrosis facial and ophthalmic symptoms were the most frequent presenting manifestations. The diagnosis was confirmed by mycological examination, with or without histopathology, identifying Rhizopus oryzae in 12 cases. Treatment consisted in systemic amphotericin B combined with surgical treatment in only 7 cases. The mortality rate was high (65%) due principa…

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a life-threatening fungal infection in patients with predisposing conditions. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 7-year-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and rhinocerebral mucormycosis who successfully completed chemotherapy. The infection with Rhizopus genus was mycologically identified from nasal secretions and therapy was based on amphotericin B with surgical debridement. Chemotherapy was safely continued after resolution of the mycosis and the patient remains in continuous complete remission at 30 months. CONCLUSIONS: Rhinocerebral mucormycosis in a…

A Rare Case of Cardiac Prosthetic Mucormicosis: Things Are Not Always What They Seem.

The diagnosis and management of cardiac masses, particularly in the emergent settings, present significant clinical challenges due to their varied etiologies and presentations. This case report describes a 74-year-old male with a history of bioprosthetic mitral valve replacement, presenting with acute heart failure and severe mitral stenosis initially presumed to be thrombosis. However, advanced histopathological and microbiological analysis of the explanted valve identified the underlying cause as early fungal bioprosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Rhizopus oryzae. The authors emphasize t…

Central retinal artery occlusion as the presenting manifestation of invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis.

Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is a rare but devastating fungal infection caused by filamentous fungi of the family Mucoraceae. We report a rare case of unilateral ROCM in a diabetic patient where central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) was the first manifestation of the disease. Magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed orbital and intracranial spread of the disease. Definitive diagnosis was established by culture of the biopsy specimen which showed Rhizopus oryzae on Sabouraud's dextrose agar. The patient was successfully treated with extensive debridement of sinuses and intraveno…

Lethargy and vision loss: successful management of rhinocerebral mucormycosis.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RCM) is an angioinvasive fungal infection most often caused by Rhizopus oryzae It is usually associated with an underlying risk factor and is associated with a poor prognosis. There are no consensus guidelines on the optimal management of this aggressive disease; most management decisions are based on case reports and expert opinion. We report a successfully managed case of RCM in an insulin-dependent diabetic, initially presenting with a change in mental status, rapidly progressing to complete right eye blindness and ophthalmoplegia and complicated by multiple cere…

Primary cutaneous mucormycosis presenting as a giant plaque: uncommon presentation of a rare mycosis.

Mucormycosis is an uncommon systemic mycosis affecting the immunocompromised individuals. It is usually caused by organisms of the genera Rhizopus and Mucor, although rarely other organisms have also been implicated. Mycoses due to these angioinvasive fungi have an acute onset, rapidly progressive course with high mortality rate. A rare and less well known is the chronic subtype of primary cutaneous mucormycosis (PCM). Herein, we report a case of PCM clinically presenting as a chronic, giant destructive plaque in a young immunocompetent male and coin the term chronic granulomatous mucormycosis…

Mucormycosis of pouch of douglas in a diabetic woman.

Mucormycosis is a severe fungal infection which is rare in clinical practice. This infection is usually acquired by inhalation; other portals of entry are ingestion and traumatic implantation, especially in immuno-compromised patients. Here, we present a case of mucormycosis in a 44-year-old diabetic woman. The patient had collection of fluid in the Pouch of Douglas (POD) and history of bleeding per vagina. Hysterectomy was done which showed a blackish serosal surface of the posterior uterus. Subsequent investigations revealed mycormycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae (R. arrhizus) affecting the …

Mucormycosis of the upper extremity in a patient with alcoholic encephalopathy.

UNLABELLED: Cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic infection caused by fungi of the class Zygomycetes that can be rapidly fatal if unrecognized. The diagnosis of this infection is often made by infectious disease, dermatologic, or intensive care specialists. Lesions that affect the upper limb may require a hand surgeon to diagnose the infection. The diagnosis may be difficult to make, because these infectious lesions can be confused with ischemic pathology. We report on a rare case of cutaneous mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus arrhizus in a patient with cirrhosis and renal failure who p…
