[Psychogenic aspects of perioral dermatitis].

A report has been given how patterns of diagnostic contributed by a Balint group led to a better understanding of patients afflicted with perioral dermatitis. The interaction between internalized and unconscious conflicts and specific, actual conflict situations has been elucidated. Various factors of individual biography and contemporary history were seen to play concurrent roles. In agreement with the results of psychological testing, certain personality attributes were observed, which manifested themselves in two types, i.e. a rather passive and a more active one. This is important for the

[Health status of physicians in Hungary: a representative study].

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence in the international literature suggests that the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity including suicide is high among physicians. In addition, data published by Hungarian researchers in the early 1990-ies showed high prevalence of somatic morbidity in this population. Based on these data, it is hypothesised that the prevalence of psychiatric and somatic morbidity is higher among physicians in Hungary compared to the white collar population. AIMS: To assess the psychiatric and somatic health status of physicians as well as the prevalence of role conflict …

From coping to structural abandonment: Reframing self-medication in Yemen's protracted conflict.

The protracted conflict in Yemen has led to profound disruptions in the health system, fundamentally reshaping patterns of healthcare access and utilization. This commentary engages with a recent study that conceptualizes self-medication and informal antibiotic use as forms of coping and agency in constrained settings, and re-examines this interpretation within the context of systemic collapse. Drawing on a structural perspective, the analysis argues that self-directed care practices in Yemen are not temporary responses to episodic constraints but are embedded within enduring structural condit

The power of friendships in adolescents' daily lives: Bi-directional within-person associations between friendship interaction quality and affect.

Friends play a critical role in adolescent development, yet relatively little is known about how friendship interactions in adolescents' daily lives relate to their affective experiences. This study examined bidirectional associations between friendship interaction quality (i.e., warmth and conflict) and momentary affect, as well as whether these associations were moderated by individual differences (i.e., depressive symptoms, habitual rumination, and gender). 247 adolescents (Mage = 12.94, SDage = 0.41, 108 females, 224 identified as Belgian) participated in an ecological momentary assessment

The Sacred, the Sinful, and the Shamed: The Association Between Compulsive Sexual Behavior, Moral Disapproval, and Sexual Shame Among Jewish Religious Adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) has recently been recognized as a possible disorder (CSBD) by the World Health Organization (ICD-11) and may affect a significant portion of adolescents. Yet the relationship between CSB, religious values, and sexual shame remains underexplored in this population. This study investigated how CSB, moral disapproval, and sexual shame intersect among Orthodox Jewish adolescents. METHODS: Drawing on a sample of 1,050 adolescents (63% boys and 37% girls, Mage = 17.39, SD = 1.36), the study examined the role of moral disapproval, which arises when sexual

Metacognition in motion: The interplay between motor evidence and visual information in shaping sensorimotor confidence.

This study examines the role of internal motor signals and visual information in the detection of and confidence in Partial-errors (PEs), subtle endogenous motor corrections. Using electromyographic (EMG) recordings, we captured motor activations during a conflict task in which participants reported the presence of PEs and rated their confidence. Two experiments were conducted: Experiment 1 provided visible visual conflict through supraliminal primes, while Experiment 2 reduced visual feedback using subliminal primes. In both Experiments, participants demonstrated limited PE detection and abov

The Success of Newborn Screening Beyond War: An International Collaborative Case of Purine Nucleoside Phosphorylase (PNP) Deficiency.

Ukraine's healthcare system has shown remarkable resilience in continuing newborn screening (NBS), beyond the challenges of war. Amid the conflict, a Ukrainian newborn screened positive for an extremely rare severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID)-purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) deficiency. Ukraine successfully carried out NBS on a neonatal dried blood spot (DBS) by real-time PCR, which showed remarkably reduced T-cell receptor and kappa-deleting recombination excision circles (TREC/KREC). Retesting was delayed due to communication difficulties with the family. Whole exome sequencing on

The role of youths' cardiac autonomic balance and parental responses to youth emotion in vulnerability to borderline personality disorder development.

Developmental models of borderline personality disorder (BPD) emphasize the effects of youths' biological vulnerabilities and their experiences of parental responses to emotion, as well as the interaction between these two elements. The current study evaluated the independent and interactive effects of two indices of autonomic nervous system response and parental responses to youth negative emotions on severity and exacerbation of youths' BPD features during the transition to adolescence. The sample consisted of 162 psychiatric youth (10-14 years; 47.2% female) and their parents. At baseline,

As the Twig is Bent so the Tree is Inclined? Exploring the Associations of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Adult Relational Impairments in Ghana.

Studies on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which have been conducted predominantly with samples from Western cultures have found ACEs to be associated with poor health outcomes and relational impairments in adulthood. This study sought to contribute to the ACEs literature by investigating the long-term consequences of ACEs on the interpersonal functioning of adult survivors in Ghana, a non-Western culture. In the current study, the associations of five ACEs (high parental conflict, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect) with four types of relational impairments (alie

Mental health consequences of violence against women and girls.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent studies on mental health consequences of violence against women and girls were reviewed in a range of situations. RECENT FINDINGS: Although several studies continued to show cross-sectional associations between child sexual abuse (CSA) and mental health outcomes, a few prospective studies showed a robust association between CSA and depression. Studies on the impact of dating violence are still at a nascent stage and focus on antecedents of violence rather than its consequences. Women at higher risk, such as adolescents, migrants, the homeless, and women in the perina

Game theory of pre-emptive vaccination before bioterrorism or accidental release of smallpox.

Smallpox was eradicated in the 1970s, but new outbreaks could be seeded by bioterrorism or accidental release. Substantial vaccine-induced morbidity and mortality make pre-emptive mass vaccination controversial, and if vaccination is voluntary, then there is a conflict between self- and group interests. This conflict can be framed as a tragedy of the commons, in which herd immunity plays the role of the commons, and free-riding (i.e. not vaccinating pre-emptively) is analogous to exploiting the commons. This game has been analysed previously for a particular post-outbreak vaccination scenario.

Serotonin, the periaqueductal gray and panic.

This article reviews experimental evidence and theoretical constructs that implicate serotonin (5-HT) modulation of defensive behavior within the midbrain periaqueductal gray in panic disorder (PD). Evidence with conflict tests in experimental animals indicates that 5-HT enhances anxiety, whereas results with aversive stimulation of the dorsal periaqueductal gray point to an anxiolytic role of 5-HT. To solve this contradiction, it has been suggested that the emotional states determined by the two types of animal model are different. Conflict tests would generate conditioned anxiety, whereas pe

Fear of compassion from others explains the relation between borderline personality disorder symptoms and ineffective conflict resolution strategies among patients with substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) pathology is common among patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) and associated with a variety of negative outcomes, including worse SUD outcomes. One particularly relevant outcome with links to substance use problems that is likely to be elevated among SUD patients with BPD symptoms is ineffective conflict resolution strategies in romantic relationships. However, no research to date has examined the relation of BPD pathology to strategies for managing conflict in romantic relationships among patients with SUDs, or the factors that may in

[Antero-internal impingement of the shoulder].

Anteromedial conflicts of the shoulder are situated in the subcoracoid or coracohumeral space, in the anterior part of the acromio-coracoid vault. The authors describe a first fibrous band connecting the anterolateral border of the acromio-coracoid ligament to the coraco-biceps tendon (Apoil) and a second deeper band between the superior border of the subscapularis and the insertion of the long head of biceps onto the labrum (Patte). The role of the vault varies according to constitution (length and direction of the coracoid process) and acquired factors (iatrogenic or traumatic); the role of

Family environment and adult attachment as predictors of psychopathology and personality dysfunction among inpatient abuse survivors.

The current study explored the role of early family environment and adult attachment style in explaining long-term outcomes among child abuse survivors. Adult patients (N = 80) in a trauma treatment program were assessed for clinical diagnosis and administered a multiscale questionnaire. Hierarchical regression analyses were significant for dissociative identity disorder (DID), substance abuse, anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress, somatization, and six personality disorder dimensions. Adult attachment styles were significant predictors of most outcome variables. Of particular note was the s

Job demands, resources and work-related well-being in UK firefighters.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that firefighters are at risk of work-related stress and mental health problems, but little is known about the organizational hazards they experience. Insight is needed into the work-related factors that are most likely to threaten or protect their work-related well-being. AIMS: To identify levels of job demands and resources (including demands relating to workload, work patterns and the working environment, relationship conflicts, control, support, role clarity and change management) among firefighters, and to use a job demands-resources framework to examine the

Mesoscale cortical mechanisms of perceptual conflict resolution in binocular rivalry.

How does the human brain resolve conflicts in sensory input to generate conscious perception? Using high-resolution 7 T functional MRI, we addressed this question by investigating column- and layer-specific activity in cortical and subcortical regions in humans during binocular rivalry. The results show that eye-specific rivalry arises from interocular inhibition between adjacent ocular dominance columns in the superficial layers of the primary visual cortex, but not between ocular layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus. Eye-specific feedback from the intraparietal sulcus pla

Intrinsic potency of biological motion in guiding attention: A conflict-based assessment across autistic traits.

Biological motion (BM) is a potent social signal capable of guiding human attention, a phenomenon termed social attention that underpins adaptive behaviour and interpersonal interaction. Although extensively studied in laboratory settings, social attention is typically examined using simplified, isolated cues, leaving unresolved whether it possesses reflexive properties distinct from nonsocial attention. This study developed a dual-cue paradigm that embedded oppositely oriented arrow cues within BM sequences, directly assessing the reflexive nature of BM-induced attention using a conflict-resi
