The Potential Pathway Among Self-Focused Attention, Rumination, Perceived Stress and Female Psychosomatic Symptoms.

Psychosomatic symptoms are common among females and involve complex psychological and cognitive processes. This study examined the relationships among self-focused attention (SFA), rumination, perceived stress, and psychosomatic symptoms. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in China among 839 women (mean age = 26.50 ± 6.08 years). Standardized questionnaires assessed SFA, rumination, perceived stress, anxiety symptoms, and somatic symptoms. Correlation, hierarchical regression, and structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses were performed. Psychosomatic symptoms were positively correlated

Ruminative reflection is associated with anticorrelations between the orbitofrontal cortex and the default mode network in depression: implications for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Patients with depression who ruminate repeatedly focus on depressive thoughts; however, there are two cognitive subtypes of rumination, reflection and brooding, each associated with different prognoses. Reflection involves problem-solving and is associated with positive outcomes, whereas brooding involves passive, negative, comparison with other people and is associated with poor outcomes. Rumination has also been related to atypical functional hyperconnectivity between the default mode network and subgenual prefrontal cortex. Repetitive pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation of the prefronta

The effect of rumination and distraction on auditory hallucinatory experiences: An analogue experimental study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The cognitive model of voices suggests that negative appraisals of hallucinatory experiences result in responses, such as rumination, which maintain voice-hearing. Our principal aim was to investigate the effect of rumination on the frequency of voice-hearing. METHODS: A two-group randomised experimental design was employed using a non-clinical sample. A total of 106 participants completed baseline measures of trait rumination, hallucination-proneness, mood and state negative affect, and were presented with a voice-hearing paradigm. False feedback designed to cause

Nonsuicidal self-injury in college students: the role of perfectionism and rumination.

A paucity of research exists examining personality and cognitive characteristics that may contribute to nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). The purpose of the current study was to clarify the contribution of perfectionism and rumination, along with depression and anxiety, to NSSI within a sample of 170 college students. Group comparisons revealed that participants with a history of NSSI endorsed significantly more rumination and depressive and anxious symptoms then non-NSSI controls. Results regarding perfectionism were mixed, with NSSI participants differing from controls on select aspects of per

Reducing Test Anxiety During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Comparison of the Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Educational assessments can affect students' mental health, particularly during a pandemic. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are widely efficacious for reducing test anxiety, as well as general anxiety and rumination. However, the effectiveness of these two therapies for students during COVID-19 is unclear. We measured the effectiveness of ACT and CBT for managing test anxiety, general anxiety, and rumination during COVID-19 for 77 students taking Türkiye's national university entrance exam, assigned to either the ACT or CBT psychoeducation program

Cognitive vulnerabilities as predictors of stress generation in early adolescence: pathway to depressive symptoms.

Although individuals with depression have been found to experience a higher rate of stress in their lives, it remains unclear to what extent other personal characteristics may contribute to stress generation. The current study extended past research by examining the effects of two theoretically and empirically supported cognitive vulnerabilities to depression (negative cognitive style and rumination) as predictors of dependent interpersonal and achievement events, independent events, and relational peer victimization. In a diverse sample of 301 early adolescents (56 % female; M(age) = 12.82 ye

Racial discrimination and anger expression: a preliminary test of a social cognitive model.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to discrimination is associated with greater use of anger suppression (anger-in) and outward expression (anger-out), both of which are reflexive anger expression styles that are linked with relationship difficulties and poorer health. Social cognitive processes, such as heightened vigilance for social threats and rumination, may link discrimination to mental health, but little is known about the role of social cognition in the associations of discrimination to anger expression. METHOD: A racially diverse community sample (nanalytic  = 155, 67% women, 39% Black, 39% Lati

Computerized Working Memory Training in Remission From Major Depressive Disorder: Effects on Emotional Working Memory, Processing Speed, Executive Functions, and Associations With Symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Remission from major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with residual symptoms related to reduced functioning, quality of life, and relapse risk. Previous studies have raised questions about mechanisms involved-in and affected by cognitive training. This study investigated the associations and changes among depressive symptoms, rumination, processing speed (PS), executive functioning (EF), and emotional working memory (e-WM) pre- post computerized working memory training (CWMT). METHOD: Twenty-nine remitted participants were included in a pre- post pilot study of within-sub

Hostile Attribution Bias and Anger Rumination Sequentially Mediate the Association Between Trait Anger and Reactive Aggression.

Reactive aggression is a type of aggression that has severe consequences in individual's psychosocial development and social stability. Trait anger is a risk personality factor for reactive aggression. However, the mediating mechanism of this relationship has not been sufficiently analyzed. We proposed that hostile attribution bias and anger rumination may be cognitive factors that play mediating roles in the relationship between trait anger and reactive aggression. To test this hypothesis, a sample of 600 undergraduates (51.67% females, M age = 20.51, SD = 1.11) participated in this study. Fi

Can I Really Do This? An Examination of Anticipatory Event Processing in Social Anxiety Disorder.

Clark and Wells (1995) posit that anticipatory processing before a social situation serves to maintain social anxiety. More specifically, ruminative processes similar to post-event processing (PEP) may occur in anticipation of anxiety provoking social events, and in this article, we have labelled this type of anticipatory rumination anticipatory event processing (AnEP). Participants (n = 75) with social anxiety disorder (SAD) completed measures of anticipatory event processing, trait anxious rumination, social anxiety, state anxiety, and PEP, in the context of completing videotaped exposures t

Explicating the role of amygdala substructure alterations in the link between hypoleptinemia and rumination in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The amygdaloid complex plays a pivotal role in emotion processing and has been associated with rumination transdiagnostically. In anorexia nervosa (AN), we previously observed differential reductions of amygdala nuclei volumes (rostral-medial cluster substantially affected) and, in another study, elevated food-/weight-related rumination. Both amygdala volumes and rumination frequency correlated with characteristically suppressed leptin levels in AN. Thus, we hypothesized that amygdala nuclei alterations might be associated with AN-related rumination and potentially mediate the lepti

Implicit emotion regulation affects the emotional information updating function of high trait ruminators: An ERP study.

Trait ruminators have negative emotionality, and their emotional information updating function may be impaired. According to the Auto-motive Model of Nonconscious Goal, implicit emotion regulation can improve both an individual's negative emotions and cognitive function while consuming fewer cognitive resources. It is unclear whether implicit emotion regulation affects the updating function in trait ruminators. Experiment 1 recruited 28 high trait ruminators and 28 low trait ruminators to complete the face 2-back task, exploring the characteristics of updating different emotional information i

Rumination in bipolar disorder associated with brain network and behavioural measures of inhibitory executive control.

OBJECTIVE: Rumination is a passive form of negative self-focused cognition that predicts depressive episodes for individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). Individuals with BD also have impaired inhibitory executive control; rumination in BD may therefore reflect executive dysfunction. We investigated the relationship between a neural measure of executive functioning (functional connectivity between the frontoparietal control network [FPCN] and the default mode network [DMN] during an effortful task), behavioural measures of executive functioning (the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functi

Rumination mediates the relationship between peer alienation and eating pathology in young adolescent girls.

PURPOSE: This study examined whether rumination, the tendency to passively and repeatedly dwell on negative events, mediated the relationship between peer alienation and eating disorder symptoms among adolescent girls. METHODS: Participants included 101 girls (ages 10-14; 47% Hispanic, 24% African American) who completed questionnaires regarding peer relationships, symptoms of eating pathology, rumination, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Girls who reported experiencing more peer alienation reported a higher degree of pathological eating symptoms. The relationship between peer alienation an

Psychological correlates of insomnia in professional soccer players: An exploratory study.

Sleep promotes health, well-being, recovery and athletic performance. As a consequence, sleep problems in athletes may have detrimental effects. Previous investigations showed that professional athletes often reported to suffer of poor sleep quality and insomnia (e.g. difficulties falling asleep and/or maintaining sleep). However, psychological variables exacerbating and maintaining insomnia in professional athletes as well as its mechanistic pathways are still largely unknown. Available literature mostly focused on effects of sport-related variables, such as evening training and stimulant con

"Looking inward," creativity, and well-being: an SEM analysis of self-reflective rumination and creative self-efficacy as pathways linking self-beliefs in creativity and well-being in college students.

Building on prior evidence linking self-reflective rumination to creativity, and given the well-established association between creativity and well-being, the present cross-sectional study examined associations between self-reflective rumination and self-beliefs in creativity and well-being (SBCW), with specific attention to the potential indirect role of creative self-efficacy. A large sample of Chinese college students (N = 1993) completed validated questionnaires assessing self-reflective rumination, SBCW (encompassing short-term and long-term dimensions), and creative self-efficacy. Depression: from psychopathology to pathophysiology.

Major depression is a psychiatric disorder with high prevalence. Both specialists in cognitive psychopathology and neurobiologists have proposed explanations of the process/systems that exhibit altered functioning during this disorder. Psychological processes that are dysfunctional in depressed patients include alterations in self-referential schemas, cognitive biases, ruminations and processing mode (over-general versus concrete). These cognitive processes are associated with altered function of specific brain systems, including prefrontal areas and cingulate cortex (both involved in self-ref

Rumination, loneliness, and non-suicidal self-injury among adolescents with major depressive disorder: The moderating role of resilience.

Adolescents often experience negative emotions, such as depression and anxiety, due to rapid biological, cognitive, and social changes during this developmental stage. In recent years, the non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has garnered increasing attention, with rumination identified as a significant risk factor for its occurrence. This study established a moderated mediation model to examine the impact of rumination on NSSI among adolescents with MDD and its underlying mechanisms. The final research sample consisted of 1,601 adolescents wit

Does Context Matter? Daily Diary Study Exploring the Effects of Stressor Intensity and Perceived Controllability on the Relationship Between Emotion Regulation and Affect in Adolescents.

Theoretical accounts emphasize the importance of context sensitivity in emotion regulation, yet research often neglects this. This study explored how adolescents' use of three emotion regulation strategies-cognitive reappraisal, distraction, and rumination-interacted with stressor intensity and perceived controllability to influence daily emotions. A total of 249 adolescents participated in a daily diary study (Mage = 12.73, SDage = 0.78; 63.1% males). Adolescents reported their daily use of emotion regulation strategies, emotional states, and contextual factors. In high-intensity stress situa

Emotion processing in intermittent explosive disorder.

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED), a disorder characterized by outbursts of affective aggression, is associated with deficits in regulating emotions. However, less is known about specific deficits in understanding and processing emotions in IED. This study sought to fill that gap by examining components of emotion processing (rumination, alexithymia, and empathy) in those with IED. Participants completed diagnostic interviews and self-report measures, and were categorized into three diagnostic groups: IED (n = 177), Psychiatric Control (PC; n = 171), and Healthy Volunteer (HV; n = 144).
