Social media use and health outcomes as moderated by rurality among sexual minority young adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social media use may influence substance use and mental health symptoms differently for urban versus rural sexual minority young adults (SMYAs). METHODS: SMYAs aged 18-25 in Oklahoma and surrounding states were recruited via social media for a two-wave online survey study in 2023-2024. Among participants reporting any social media use, multivariable logistic regressions examined associations of social media use variables and rural-urban residence with health outcomes. Multiple group regressions examined whether associations varied for rural- versus urban-residing pa

"It's a lifeline": perspectives and experiences of health technology use among HIV care providers in rural Florida.

The use of health technology, such as telehealth and mobile health used to support or deliver health care, is a promising strategy to improve HIV outcomes among people with HIV (PWH) in the rural South. In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 HIV care providers in rural Florida to understand the perspectives and experiences of using health technology to deliver care for PWH. Thematic analysis was applied. Emerging themes were organized under four domains: current and prior health technology practices, drawbacks to health technology, benefits of health technology, and potential facilitators

The two costs of neglect: evaluating the health and economic impacts of anthrax in an endemic area of rural Africa.

Endemic zoonoses have a dual burden, impacting human and animal health, as well as livelihoods due to livestock losses. One such disease is anthrax, caused by Bacillus anthracis. Data on the burden of anthrax on human and animal health are extremely limited, perpetuating neglect at the policy level in endemic areas and internationally. To address these data inadequacies, we quantified the widespread impacts of anthrax on highly affected communities, focusing on a hyper-endemic area of eastern Africa, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) of northern Tanzania. Data were collected between 2016

Pediatric Oral Health Online Education for Rural and Migrant Head Start Programs in the United States.

Children living in rural and migrant areas in the United States disproportionately suffer from poor oral health. Additionally, there continues to be a shortage of pediatric dentists practicing in rural/migrant areas. The purpose of this formative research study was to assess whether staff, teachers and families from rural/migrant Head Start/Early Head Start (HS/EHS) programs in California were receptive to oral health online education workshops conducted by pediatric dental residents who were assisted by bilingual (English and Spanish) community oral health workers (COHWs). Our findings sugges

Implementation of a quality improvement strategy to optimise the management of community acquired pneumonia in a rural health setting.

PROBLEM: In Australia, inappropriate prescribing of antimicrobials is higher in rural and regional areas than in major city hospitals. Inappropriate prescribing is defined as the prescription of antimicrobial agents that do not adhere to guidelines in terms of type of antimicrobial chosen, dose and/or duration or are deemed unnecessary. A review of antimicrobial prescribing in a Queensland rural Hospital and Health Service (HHS) identified that respiratory infections were an area for potential improvement. SETTING: The study was performed in a rural HHS in Queensland. KEY MEASURES FOR IMPROV

Intersectional equity in Brazil's remote rural municipalities: the road to efficiency and effectiveness in local health systems.

OBJECTIVE: The Brazilian remote rurality has been classified more reliably only recently, according to demographic density, proportion of urban population, and accessibility to urban centers. It comprises 5.8% of the municipalities, in nearly half of the states, with a population of 3,524,597 (1.85%). Remote rural localities (RRL) have reduced political/economic power, facing greater distances and barriers. Most health strategies are developed with the urban space in mind. We aim to understand how RRL are positioned concerning efficiency/effectiveness in health, compared to other urban-rural t

Neurocognitive and mental health outcomes in children with tungiasis: a cross-sectional study in rural Kenya and Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis, a neglected tropical parasitosis, disproportionately affects children. Few empirical studies have reported neurocognitive and mental health outcomes of children with ectoparasitic skin diseases like tungiasis. Pathophysiology of tungiasis suggests it could detrimentally affect cognition and behaviour. This study pioneered the investigation of neurocognitive and mental health outcomes in children with tungiasis. METHODS: This was a multi-site cross-sectional study including 454 quasi-randomly sampled school-children aged 8-14 from 48 randomly selected schools in two coun

Dispersion, olfactory effect, and health risks of VOCs and odors in a rural domestic waste transfer station.

The impact of odorous gases emitted from refuse transfer stations has always been a concern raised by the surrounding residents. The emitted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors were investigated in a rural solid waste transfer station (RSWTS) located in Southwest China. A total of 70 VOCs were identified and quantified. The total VOCs (TVOCs) concentrations varied from 848.38 to 31193.24 μg/m3. Inorganic odor and greenhouse gases concentrations ranged from 39.11 to 470.14 μg/m3 and 1.03-525.42 μg/m3, respectively. Oxygenated compounds contributed the most (58.25%) to the VOCs. Among th

Precision global health and comorbidity: a population-based study of 16 357 people in rural Uganda.

In low-income countries, complex comorbidities and weak health systems confound disease diagnosis and treatment. Yet, data-driven approaches have not been applied to develop better diagnostic strategies or to tailor treatment delivery for individuals within rural poor communities. We observed symptoms/diseases reported within three months by 16 357 individuals aged 1+ years in 17 villages of Mayuge District, Uganda. Symptoms were mapped to the Human Phenotype Ontology. Comorbidity networks were constructed. An edge between two symptoms/diseases was generated if the relative risk greater than 1
