Cognitive outcome in relation to cerebrospinal fluid markers of neuronal and glial cell damage: A prospective study of tick-borne encephalitis.

OBJECTIVES: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) often results in long-term cognitive sequelae. While biomarkers of neuronal and glial injury are established in other neurological conditions, their role in predicting cognitive outcomes in TBE remains unclear. This study investigated whether acute-phase levels of neurofilament light (NfL), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and S100B (calcium-binding protein B) in both cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum, and tau and chitinase-3-like protein 1 (YKL-40) in CSF only, were associated with cognitive functioning at follow-up. METHODS: Ninety-two adul

Delayed treatment with arundic acid reduces the MPTP-induced neurotoxicity in mice.

The authors investigated the protective effects of a novel astrocyte-modulating agent, arundic acid, in a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahyropyridine (MPTP) mouse model of Parkinson's disease. Male mice received four intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of MPTP (20 mg/kg) at 2 h intervals. The content of dopamine and its metabolites in the striatum was reduced markedly 7 days after MPTP treatment. The delayed treatment with arundic acid (30 mg/kg, i.p.) administered 3, 4, 5 and 6 days after MPTP treatment did not affect the depletion of dopamine and its metabolites in the striatum. Our immunohist

The astrocytic response to the dopaminergic denervation of the striatum.

Increasing evidence suggests that the dopaminergic degeneration which characterizes Parkinson's disease starts in the striatal dopamine terminals and progresses retrogradely to the body of dopamine cells in the substantia nigra. The role of striatal astrocytes in the striatal initiation of the dopaminergic degeneration is little known. This work was aimed at studying the astrocytic response to the dopaminergic denervation of the striatum. The injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (25 μg) in the lateral ventricle of adult Sprague-Dawley rats induced a fast (4 h) and selective (unaccompanied by unspeci

Evaluation of postmortem S100B levels in the cerebrospinal fluid with regard to the cause of death in medicolegal autopsy.

Previous studies have suggested the usefulness of the postmortem serum S100B level as a marker of the severity of brain damage. In this study, we investigated the S100B level in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in serial autopsy cases (n=216, within 3 days postmortem), including those of blunt injury (n=34: fatal head injury, n=20; others, n=14), sharp instrument injury (n=9), mechanical asphyxiation (n=19), drowning (n=11), fire fatality (n=26), intoxication (n=20), hypothermia (cold exposure, n=16), hyperthermia (heat stroke, n=9), acute cardiac death (n=52) and pneumonia (n=20). S100beta and fibroblast growth factor-2 are present in cultured Schwann cells and may exert paracrine actions on the peripheral nerve injury.

PURPOSE: The neurotrophic factor fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2, bFGF) and Ca++ binding protein S100beta are expressed by the Schwann cells of the peripheral nerves and by the satellite cells of the dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Recent studies have pointed out the importance of the molecules in the paracrine mechanisms related to neuronal maintenance and plasticity of lesioned motor and sensory peripheral neurons. Moreover, cultured Schwann cells have been employed experimentally in the treatment of central nervous system lesions, in special the spinal cord injury, a procedure that triggers an

Serum S-100B as an indicator of early postoperative deterioration after meningioma surgery.

BACKGROUND: S-100B protein is an established serum marker of primary and secondary brain damage in head injury and stroke. Despite major progress in neurophysiologic monitoring, there are still difficulties in the early identification and quantification of evolving edema or trauma after craniotomy for tumor. In this study we aimed to correlate serum S-100B values with early postoperative neurologic course as well as late outcome in meningioma surgery. METHODS: We enrolled 50 consecutive patients who underwent meningioma resection. Serum S-100B was measured preoperatively and postcraniotomy fo

High-dose propofol reduces S-100β protein and neuron-specific enolase levels in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

OBJECTIVES: In a variety of experimental models, propofol has been shown to protect the brain. It was hypothesized that a clinically achievable high dose of propofol would induce cerebral protective effects in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The authors investigated the effects of different target plasma concentrations of propofol on cerebral injury by measuring serum S-100β protein and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) levels in patients undergoing single-valve replacement with CPB. DESIGN: A prospective, randomized study. SETTING: A university hospital.

Assessment of biocorrelates for brain involvement in female patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities are rare in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Direct studies done to investigate brain involvement in RA are few or even absent. We hypothesized that CNS is not excluded from the inflammatory disease process in RA. Thus we systematically investigated markers of brain involvement in 55 females with RA. We examined patients' cognition using battery of sensitive psychometric testing [Mini-Mental State Examination, Stanford-Binet test (fourth edition) and Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised] and by recording P300 component of event-related potentials, a
