Immune interaction between SARS-CoV-2 and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

SARS-CoV-2 and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) are major infectious causes of death, with meta-analyses and population-based studies finding increased mortality in co-infected patients simultaneously diagnosed with COVID-19 and tuberculosis (TB). There is a need to understand the immune interaction between SARS-CoV-2 and Mtb which impacts poor outcomes for those co-infected. We performed a PubMed and preprint search using keywords [SARS-CoV-2] AND [tuberculosis] AND [Immune response], including publications after January 2020, excluding reviews or opinions. Abstracts were evaluated by authors…

Self-reported Side Effects of SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination.

SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are often promoted as safe. However, real world data tell a different story. The aim of this study is to investigate the type and frequency of adverse reactions to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in a randomly selected cohort of unrelated individuals. Adverse reactions to the first/second dose of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine were recorded using an online reporting system called "Pabbly". Patients were asked via social media to report any symptoms temporarily associated with vaccination. One hundred subjects were enrolled. The mean age was 42.6 years (range: 12-74 years). Ninety-one percent …

Membranous nephropathy after a recent SARS-CoV-2 infection.

SARS-CoV-2 infections can induce kidney injury and glomerulopathy, with the most common pathology findings being acute tubular injury and collapsing glomerulopathy. Here we describe a rare case of membranous nephropathy in a man in his late 70s presented with nephrotic syndrome and rapidly progressive kidney dysfunction 1 month after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Phospholipase A2 receptor antibodies were positive. He was treated with rituximab, with proteinuria control. We review the cases reported in the literature.

SARS-CoV-2 Impact on Red Blood Cell Morphology.

Severe COVID-19 alters the biochemical and morphological characteristics of blood cells in a wide variety of ways. To date, however, the vast majority of research has been devoted to the study of leukocytes, while erythrocyte morphological changes have received significantly less attention. The aim of this research was to identify erythrocyte morphology abnormalities that occur in COVID-19, compare the number of different poikilocyte types, and measure erythrocyte sizes to provide data on size dispersion. Red blood cells obtained from 6 control donors (800-2200 cells per donor) and 5 COVID-19

SARS-CoV-2 Humoral Immunity Persists Following Rituximab Therapy.

Long-term humoral immunity is mediated by short-lived plasma cells (replenished by memory B cells) and long-lived plasma cells. Their relative contributions are uncertain for immunity to SARS-CoV-2, especially given the widespread use of novel mRNA vaccines. Yet, this has far-reaching implications in terms of the need for regular booster doses in the general population and perhaps even revaccination in patients receiving B cell-depleting therapy. We aimed to characterise anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody titres in patients receiving Rituximab following previous SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. We recruited 10 f…

Morphological abnormalities of leukocytes in SARS-CoV-2 infection.

INTRODUCTION: The causative agent of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) is an enveloped RNA (ribonucleic acid) virus of the SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2) family. The effects of SARS-CoV-2 on the differentiation and maturation of blood cells have been the subject of several studies, we report our experience of an investigation of the morphologic abnormalities of leukocytes observed during COVID-19. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a prospective study of 5 months, from February 2021 to June 2021. Forty COVID-19 patients and 20 healthy controls were included in this …

Maternal and neonatal outcomes following SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Infection with SARS-CoV-2 causing COVID-19 in pregnancy is known to confer risks to both the pregnant patient and fetus. A review of the current literature demonstrates that pregnant individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection are at risk for higher composite morbidity, intensive care unit admission, ventilatory support, pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, and neonatal intensive care unit admissions compared to pregnant individuals without SARS-CoV-2. Worse obstetric morbidity and mortality generally correlate with the severity of COVID-19. Comorbidities such as diabetes increase the risk of severe COVID-…

SARS-CoV-2-Placental effects and association with stillbirth.

SARS-CoV-2 has had a significant impact on pregnancy outcomes due to the effects of the virus and the altered healthcare environment. Stillbirth has been relatively hidden during the COVID-19 pandemic, but a clear link between SARS-CoV-2 and poor fetal outcome emerged in the Alpha and Delta waves. A small minority of women/birthing people who contracted COVID-19 developed SARS-CoV-2 placentitis. In many reported cases this was linked to intrauterine fetal death, although there are cases of delivery just before imminent fetal demise and we shall discuss how some cases are sub-clinical. What is …

Transplantation of hearts from SARS-CoV-2 positive donors.

Incidence of SARS-CoV-2 remains high in the population. Consequently, an increasing percentage of reported organ donors are also SARS-CoV-2 positive. Although donors may not have experienced COVID-19-related symptoms, there is a chance of unnoticed cardiovascular effects associated with this disease. Therefore, SARS-CoV-2 donor grafts have been regularly rejected for heart transplantation (HTx) for a long time. We hereby present three consecutive patients receiving grafts from SARS-CoV-2 positive donors (defined by the PCR cycle threshold value < 30). All patients underwent HTx after a previou…

Nocardia pseudobrasiliensis Co-infection in SARS-CoV-2 Patients.

During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, few cases of Nocar-dia spp. co-infection have been reported during or after a COVID-19 infection. Nocardia spp. are gram-positive aerobic actinomycetes that stain partially acid-fast, can infect immunocompromised patients, and may cause dis-seminated disease. We report the case of a 52-year-old immunocompromised man who had Nocardia pseudobrasiliensis pneumonia develop after a SARS-CoV-2 in-fection. We also summarize the literature for no-cardiosis and SARS-CoV-2 co-infections. Nocardia spp. infection should remain a part of the differential diagnosis for pneumo…

Ferrets are valuable models for SARS-CoV-2 research.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), resulted in an ongoing pandemic with millions of deaths worldwide. Infection of humans can be asymptomatic or result in fever, fatigue, dry cough, dyspnea, and acute respiratory distress syndrome with multiorgan failure in severe cases. The pathogenesis of COVID-19 is not fully understood, and various models employing different species are currently applied. Ferrets can be infected with SARS-CoV-2 and efficiently transmit the virus to contact animals. In contrast to hamsters, ferrets us…

Hyponatremia and SARS-CoV-2 infection: A narrative review.

A novel rapid spreading and changing virus called SARS-CoV-2 appeared in Wuhan city in December 2019. It was announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a pandemic disease in March 2020. It commonly presents with respiratory symptoms; however, it may be asymptomatic. Electrolyte abnormalities are not uncommon features of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Hyponatremia is one of these electrolyte disturbances among SARS-CoV-2 patients, and it may produce symptoms such as weakness and seizure as the initial presenting symptoms. The underlying mechanism(s) of hyponatremia due to SARS-CoV-2 infection i…

SARS-CoV-2 Effects on the Male Genitourinary System.

SARS-CoV-2 infection arose in 2019 and has changed life as we know it. With our ever-advancing knowledge, therapies, and vaccines, more functions of the SARS-CoV-2 virus are being investigated outside of its pulmonary invasion. Here, we set out to review the current and pertinent literature on the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the male genitourinary system including the bladder, lower urinary tract, prostate, testis, and penis. The biggest newsworthy stake was if SARS-CoV-2 could be transmitted through semen. Although initially thought to occur, more recent studies have opposed this hypothesis. Outs…

Mind the feline coronavirus: Comparison with SARS-CoV-2.

Both feline coronavirus (FCoV) and SARS-CoV-2 are coronaviruses that infect cats and humans, respectively. However, cats have been shown to be susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, and FCoV also had been shown to infect human. To elucidate the relationship between FCoV and SARS-CoV-2, we highlight the main characteristics of the genome, the receptor usage, and the correlation of the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of spike proteins in FCoV and SARS-CoV-2. It is demonstrated that FCoV and SARS-CoV-2 are closely related to the main characteristics of the genome, receptor usage, and RBD of spike proteins with…

SARS-CoV-2 requires acidic pH to infect cells.

UNLABELLED: SARS-CoV-2 cell entry starts with membrane attachment and ends with spike-protein (S) catalyzed membrane fusion depending on two cleavage steps, one usually by furin in producing cells and the second by TMPRSS2 on target cells. Endosomal cathepsins can carry out both. Using real-time 3D single virion tracking, we show fusion and genome penetration requires virion exposure to an acidic milieu of pH 6.2-6.8, even when furin and TMPRSS2 cleavages have occurred. We detect the sequential steps of S1-fragment dissociation, fusion, and content release from the cell surface in TMPRRS2 over…
