Localized crusted scabies of the scalp and feet.

An atypical case of crusted scabies in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is presented in which lesions at the time of evaluation were confined to the scalp and feet. Because of the unusual presentation, the scalp involvement (which clinically mimicked seborrheic dermatitis) was initially missed. Although both the crusted variant of scabies and scabietic involvement of the scalp are well documented to occur in immunocompromised patients, to our knowledge scabies confined to the scalp and feet has not been previously reported.

A research on scalp acupuncture for cerebral infarction.

In order to evaluate the clinical value of the describes in the Standard Nomenclature of Scalp Acupuncture Lines, 105 patients suffering from cerebral infarction have been treated by needling along the anterior and posterior oblique lines of vertex-temple, and the line 1 and line 2 lateral to vertex. The markedly effective rate was 71.43%, and the total effective rate 88.57%. After treatment, such symptoms as hemiplegia, lingual dysfunction, facial and tongue paralysis, and the laboratory indexes of blood fat, fibrinogen and hemorrheology were obviously improved (P < 0.01 or 0.05). The therape…

[Repair of scalp defects with skull exposure].

The methods for repairing scalp defects and skull exposure are introduced. From 1980 to 1991, 9 cases of scalp defects and skull exposure from injury or tumor extirpation were treated with free omentum transfer with split skin graft, free flap or axial flap transfer. The surgical procedure was described in detail. For the whole defect of scalp with skull exposure the authors consider the free anterior-lateral femoral flap more appropriate and suggest that the free omentum flap be avoided as far as possible.

Microvascular replantation of a completely avulsed scalp.

Total scalp avulsion is an unusual injury. To obtain good functional and cosmetic results, immediate revascularization using microsurgical techniques and replacement of the scalp in the correct anatomical position is the procedure of choice. This article describes a case report of successful replantation of a totally avulsed scalp from a 26-year-old male. Bilateral superficial temporal vessel anastomoses were performed using reversed autologous long saphenous vein grafts on the right side and direct repair on the left. Points of technique are discussed and the literature is reviewed.

Subcutaneous palisading granuloma of the scalp in childhood.

Subcutaneous palisading granulomas, lesions characterized by collagen necrosis and chronic inflammatory changes, may present as ill-defined, immobile, nontender masses of the scalp. They are frequently multiple and may vary in size over time. Imaging studies rarely show involvement of the calvarium. The histological pattern of palisading histiocytes around necrobiotic granulomas is seen in association with a variety of systemic illnesses but more commonly occurs as an isolated entity in childhood. They are unlikely to herald rheumatological disease unless the erythrocyte sedimentation rate is …

The prognostic implications of location for scalp melanoma.

The clinical and pathologic records of 95 patients with primary cutaneous melanoma isolated to the scalp and regional lymph nodes treated at the MD Anderson Cancer Center between 1976 and 1985 were reviewed to assess the effect of lesion location on the prognosis of scalp melanoma. The scalp was defined as an area bounded by the supraorbital ridges, superior nuchal line, zygoma, and mastoid, thereby including a large non-hair-bearing area. Patients were grouped according to lesion location: hair-bearing or non-hair-bearing; anterior or posterior to the mid-tragal line; and parietal versus fron…

Prognostic significance of melanoma arising in the scalp.

Thirty-five patients with stage I melanoma of the scalp were retrospectively reviewed and compared with similar patients with melanoma of the extremity and trunk. Patients with melanoma of the scalp were predominantly male. The 5-year survival rate was 89 percent. This compared favorably with similar patients with melanoma arising either in the trunk or the extremity. The prognosis of patients with stage I melanoma of the scalp is no worse than that of patients with melanoma arising in the trunk or extremity; therefore, they should be treated in a comparable manner.

Angiosarcoma of the face and scalp, prognosis and treatment.

72 patients with angiosarcoma (AS) of the face and scalp have been analyzed with respect of various prognostic factors and the effects of different treatment regimes. This disease predominantly occurs in the elderly (age range, 56-92 years), and affects men rather more frequently than women (men: 44, women: 28). The clinical presentation varied, and included bruise-like lesions, dusky plaques, chronic edema or cellulitis, ulcerated nodules, pyoderma, and infected conditions. Due to lack of clinical awareness and problems with histologic assessment, delays in diagnosis were frequent. The majori…

Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus of the scalp.

A patient is described who developed pruritic lesions of the scalp with increasing hair loss and plaque formation over a period of 15 years, in association with patches of white atrophic skin on her trunk and vulva in the last 5 years. Biopsies of the scalp and trunk lesions both showed lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. This would appear to be the first recorded case of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus of the scalp in the English literature.

Congenital arteriovenous malformation of the face and scalp.

A case of congenital arteriovenous fistula of the forehead and scalp is presented. A review of the embryology, incidence, clinical findings, and diagnostic techniques is discussed along with the various modes of therapy. The ideal treatment of congenital arteriovenous malformation is early, total removal of the tissue involved.

On the physiology and biochemistry of the scalp and hair lipids.

Analyses were made of the scalp and hair lipids of 67 test persons. These were the most important results: 1. Seborrhoea is caused on one hand by a high secretion performance of the sebaceous glands. A further cause is that a longer period of time passes before a constant lipid amount is established. 2. There was an average of 19.32% of free fatty acids in the scalp and hair lipids on the 1st day after the hair was washed, and 38.68% on the 10th day. These results allow an assessment of the physiological significance of microbial lipolysis outside the secretory ducts of the sebaceous glands. 3…
