Usage of support services in primary lateral sclerosis.

Patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) rely on a variety of support services during the course of their illness. Patients with primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) have a slower progression of disease and different clinical spectrum. Their needs for allied health services and social support have not been well characterized. To investigate these needs, 25 patients with PLS and caregivers were surveyed on the use of assistive devices and support services. Needs for assistance changed as the disease progressed. Their greatest need was for gait-assistive devices and home help for activities

Internet-based self-help versus one-session exposure in the treatment of spider phobia: a randomized controlled trial.

The authors compared guided Internet-delivered self-help with one session of live-exposure treatment in a sample of spider-phobic patients. A total of 30 patients were included following screening on the Internet and a structured clinical interview. The Internet treatment consisted of five weekly text modules, which were presented on a web page, a video in which exposure was modelled, and support provided via Internet. The live-exposure treatment was delivered in a 3-hr session following a brief orientation session. The main outcome measure was the behavioural approach test (BAT), and as secon

[Doctor and grief].

In Germany approximately 1% of the population dies each year. This indicates that at least 2-3% of the population will be bereaved every year. Consequently, approximately 2 million people will experience severe loss in Germany each year. This has not only strong psychosocial implications, but is also linked to a broad range of health risks, including increased mortality. Given these statistics it is surprising that loss, grief and bereavement are not given more attention within undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional medical education across Germany. This article aims to provid

Are peer support groups for adolescents with Asperger's syndrome helpful?

There is very little documentation dealing with peer support groups for people with Asperger's syndrome, and especially about groups for adolescents. This article gives a description of three such groups that were run in parallel with support groups for parents. The great majority of the participants completed the course of the group. In a consumer satisfaction survey, the majority of the participants (76.5%) and nearly all of their parents (95%) rated satisfaction with the group meetings as good or very good. These responses indicate that adolescents with Asperger's syndrome and their parents

[Frontotemporal dementia: specific problems for caregivers].

Frontotemporal dementia is a relatively rare neurodegenerative disease. In the majority of cases the onset is at a presenile age, and changes of behavior as well as alterations of personality and social conduct are predominant symptoms whereas cognitive deficits are mild. Therefore interventions for caregivers including self-help groups and educational programs which are usually tailored to Alzheimer's disease often do not meet the needs of caregivers of patients with FTD. The present paper reviews the clinical features of FTD, outlines the specific problems and burdens that caregivers are fac…

[Coping in patients after liver transplantation with regard to their membership in a self-group].

BACKGROUND: Within the past 15 years, liver transplantation has proven itself to be the treatment of choice among patients with terminal liver disease. The one-year survival rate is about 80 %; after 8 years 61 % of the patients are still alive. The present study investigates the influence of active or depressive coping on the physical and mental quality of life in two different groups of patients after liver transplantation. METHODS: Members (n = 65) and non-members (n = 20) of a German self-help group were asked to fill out a postal survey. Patients were included if their liver transplantat

Speech treatment and support group experiences of people who participate in the National Stuttering Association.

UNLABELLED: Support groups are rapidly becoming an important part of the recovery process for many people who stutter, and a growing number of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are encouraging their clients to participate in support groups. At present, however, little is known about the individuals who join stuttering support groups and the benefits they derive from their participation. This study surveyed members of the National Stuttering Association (NSA) to learn about their experiences in support groups, as well as their experiences in speech therapy. Respondents were 71 people who atte

Alcoholics anonymous, other 12-step movements and psychotherapy in the US population, 1990.

Based on the 1990 US National Alcohol Survey, this note provides the first available comprehensive findings on self-reported utilization of a variety of sources of personal support and counselling for alcohol and other problems. Respondents were queried about lifetime attendance and number of times they went to identified sources of help in the prior year. Twelve-step groups included Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, Adult Children of Alcoholics, and other non-alcohol-oriented groups like Gamblers Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Overeaters Anonymous; additional questions inquired about suppor

The impact of a peer support group for children with rheumatic heart disease in Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of a peer-support group on knowledge, quality of life, and social support for children with rheumatic heart disease (RHD). METHODS: Children diagnosed with RHD and receiving 4-weekly injectable penicillin were invited to participate in a monthly support group for 6 months. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included a baseline RHD knowledge assessment, a measure of health related quality of life (HRQOL) (PedsQLTM4.0), and a measure of social support (Hawthorne Friendship Scale). Groups incorporated elements of cooperative play and team building, RHD educati

Translating the short version of the Perinatal Grief Scale: process and challenges.

Non-English-speaking populations may be excluded from rigorous clinical research because of the lack of reliable and valid instrumentation to measure psychosocial variables. The purpose of this article is to describe the process and challenges when translating a research instrument. The process will be illustrated in the project of translating into Spanish the Short Version of the Perinatal Grief Scale, extensively studied in English-speaking, primarily Caucasian populations. Translation methods, errors, and tips are included. Tools cannot be used in transcultural research and practice without

Acceptability of an online peer support group as a strategy to improve antiretroviral therapy adherence among young people in Kampala district, Uganda: qualitative findings.

INTRODUCTION: Peer support groups may contribute to adherence and play a role in decreasing the stigma of antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among young people living with HIV (YPLHIV). However, peer support activities usually occur face-to-face in Uganda and elsewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa and thus have structural limitations and may not be readily available when young people need them. Online peer support has the potential to help YPLHIV access regular psychosocial support without significant effort or cost. We assessed the acceptability of a WhatsApp peer support group as a strategy to

Exploring the Person-Centeredness of an Innovative E-Supportive System Aimed at Person-Centered Care: Prototype Evaluation of the Care Expert.

Integrated in a multiphase development project, the Care Expert is a prototype of a novel e-supportive system aiming to mediate person-centered care in the context of outpatient oncology. At this early stage of development, the current study was conducted aiming at exploring the person-centeredness concept underlying the Care Expert version 1.0 and its usability for patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy for breast cancer. Within a user-centered design, we followed a mixed-methods approach entailing subjective assessment and diagnostic evaluation of the prototype. Four women undergoing out

Fear and loathing in New England: examining the health-care perspectives of homeless people in rural areas.

Little anthropological research has been conducted on the health care perspectives of homeless people in rural areas. The aim of the present study is to elicit health-care beliefs, and examine overall health experience among a sample of current or recently homeless people in rural New Hampshire. Thirteen qualitative interviews were conducted, 11 with single men. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Despite a massive burden of disease and illness, almost all participants reported an abiding aversion to doctors, hospitals and professional health c

'Hirsutism': a psychological analysis.

Hirsutism, i.e. 'excess' body hair in the 'male' distribution, is a medical term applied only to women. Although associated with social and psychological difficulties including anxiety, social avoidance and a confusion of gender identity and although it raises important gender issues, there has been little systematic study. No prior research has focussed on the relationship between women's perceived degree of hirsutism and psychological distress. A survey of 53 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which often produces 'excess' hair growth, was carried out to assess any psychological co
