The Ferlo area (north-central Senegal) is characterized by a system of temporary ponds favorable to arboviruses among which West Nile fever (WNF) was already identified. During the rainy season in 2003, a serological study was undertaken on horses to assess the activity of the WNF virus (WNFV) in Barkedji (Ferlo). More than 2000 animals belonging to six different rodent species and one insectivore species were examined for infection with schistosomes in the region of Richard-Toll, Senegal. Two murid rodents, Arvicanthis niloticus and Mastomys huberti, were found infected with Schistosoma mansoni. The epidemiology of measles has been investigated in Niakhar, a rural area of Senegal, during two periods, 1983-1986 and 1987-1990. Following a major increase in immunization coverage beginning in 1987, the case fatality ratio for all ages declined fourfold from the first to the second period (relative risk (RR) = 0.24, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.13-0.46). The purpose of this work was to investigate the use of the ELISA test for the diagnosis of fasciolosis (Fasciola gigantica) in sheep, in Senegal, using Fasciola gigantica metabolic excretion-secretion products as antigens. Coprological analysis results were negative until the fourteenth week following infection; using the ELISA test, the first anti-Fasciola gigantica antibodies can be detected as early as the fourth week following infection.
