Prevalence of trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms among the Icelandic population: gender and regional differences.

AIM: The primary aim of this cross-sectional study was to provide descriptive data about the lifetime prevalence of trauma exposure with a particular focus on sexual violence and natural disasters and to assess the prevalence of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Icelandic population. In addition, the aim was to investigate whether PTSD symptoms, trauma types and prevalence differed by gender and geographical location. METHOD: A representative sample of the population between the ages of 18 and 80 years was randomly selected from the Icelandic National Registrar. The stu

Common psychological defenses seen in the treatment of sexually abused adolescents.

The negative psychological aftermath of sexual abuse is complex and has a direct correlation with the establishment of maladaptive defense mechanisms. Long-term psychotherapy can allow the adolescent patient to establish the cognitive and affective connections to the original trauma and work through the residue of guilt and shame. As mastery is achieved through the treatment process, higher level defenses should become more pronounced. Because the repressed memories related to the sexual trauma need to be unfolded slowly, so that the defensive capacities are not overwhelmed, treatment may need…

Patterns of lifetime female victimisation and psychotic experiences: a study based on the UK Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007.

PURPOSE: Research has shown that sexual trauma represents a specific threat for psychosis, particularly among females. Sexual trauma among females, however, has also been shown to enhance the risk for further revictimisation. Females are likely to exhibit distinct lifetime trauma profiles, i.e. female sexual trauma victims are often more likely to experience particular forms of re-victimisation, such as intimate partner and domestic violence. METHODS: This study used data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (2007) to profile lifetime histories of sexual trauma and domestic violence am…

Sexual victimization, health status, and VA healthcare utilization among lesbian and bisexual OEF/OIF veterans.

BACKGROUND: Many lesbian and bisexual (LB) women veterans may have been targets of victimization in the military based on their gender and p … esbian (4.7 %), or bisexual (4.9 %). MAIN MEASURES: Measures included sexual orientation, military sexual trauma, mental and gender-specific health diagnoses, and VA healthcare utilization and satisfaction. KEY RESULTS: LB OEF/OIF veterans were significantly more likely to have experienced both military and childhood sexual trauma than heterosexual women (MST …

Association Between Early Trauma and Ideal Cardiovascular Health Among Black Americans: Results From the Morehouse-Emory Cardiovascular (MECA) Center for Health Equity.

BACKGROUND: Early trauma (general, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse before age 18 years) has been associated with both cardiovascular disease risk and lifestyle-related risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. Despite higher prevalence, the association between early trauma and cardiovascular health (CVH) has been understudied in Black Americans, especially those from low-income backgrounds, who may be doubly vulnerable. Therefore, we investigated the association between early trauma and CVH, particularly among low-income Black Americans

Effects of adolescent trauma exposure on risky behavior in college women.

Individuals with sexual assault or abuse histories are likely to engage in risky sexual and other self-destructive behaviors. Studies of these behaviors, however, have focused on target traumatic events without accounting for other events in the participant's history, recency of the events, and/or developmental level at time of occurrence. The present study addressed some of these confounds by creating groups with unique and non-overlapping trauma histories among adolescent participants whose first trauma occurred at age 12 or older. Sophomore women from six regional campuses were screened in

Changes in Autonomic Nervous System Activity are Associated with Changes in Sexual Function in Women with a History of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Women with histories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) have higher rates of sexual difficulties, as well as high sympathetic nervous system response to sexual stimuli. AIM: The study aims to examine whether treatment-related changes in autonomic balance, as indexed by heart rate variability (HRV), were associated with changes in sexual arousal and orgasm function. METHODS: In study 1, we measured HRV while writing a sexual essay in 42 healthy, sexually functional women without any history of sexual trauma. These data, along with demographics, were used to develop HRV norms equati…

Latent class analysis of women with borderline personality disorder: the role of adverse childhood experiences in impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, and neurocognitive profiles.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex psychiatric condition strongly associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This study examined how childhood trauma interacts with impulsivity, emotion dysregulation, and cognitive functioning to identify distinct clinical subtypes in women with BPD and inform personalized treatment strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 231 women with BPD completed standardized assessments of childhood trauma (CTQ-SF), impulsivity (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale), and emotion regulation (DERS-SF), along with a n

Trauma and its implications for women's cardiovascular health during the menopause transition: Lessons from MsHeart/MsBrain and SWAN studies.

Trauma exposure, whether experienced during childhood or adulthood, is prevalent among women. While experiences of trauma are well known to impact mental health, emerging research also links them to women's physical health. The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) and the MsHeart/MsBrain studies, two separate studies devoted to studying midlife women's health, have contributed importantly to the understanding of the implications of trauma to women's health at midlife and beyond. Specifically, findings from these studies have revealed that both childhood and adult trauma exposure ar

Childhood trauma and auditory verbal hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: Hallucinations have consistently been associated with traumatic experiences during childhood. This association appears strongest between physical and sexual abuse and auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH). It remains unclear whether traumatic experiences mainly colour the content of AVH or whether childhood trauma triggers the vulnerability to experience hallucinations in general. In order to investigate the association between hallucinations, childhood trauma and the emotional content of hallucinations, experienced trauma and phenomenology of AVH were investigated in non-psychotic

Panic following trauma: the etiology of acute posttraumatic arousal.

Two studies examined the contributing factors for panic symptoms following trauma. In Study 1, survivors of sexual and nonsexual assaults (N=105) were assessed at 2 weeks postcrime. Prior trauma, psychiatric history, crime characteristics, and peritraumatic dissociation were assessed. Posttraumatic panic was modestly predicted by childhood sexual abuse (CSA) experiences, a history of Anxiety and Depression, and peritraumatic dissociation. Childhood physical abuse (CPA), Adult Victimization, crime variables, and a prior history of Substance Use disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

High Betrayal Child Sexual Abuse and Hallucinations: A Test of an Indirect Effect of Dissociation.

Though hallucinations traditionally have been conceptualized as a central feature of psychosis, some hallucinations may be dissociative, with dissociation potentially contributing to hallucinations. Childhood trauma has been linked with dissociation and hallucinations. Betrayal trauma theory distinguishes abusive experiences based on closeness to the perpetrator. In the current study, we examined the indirect effect of dissociation on the relationship between high betrayal child sexual abuse (perpetrated by a close other) and hallucinations. Participants (N = 192) from a northwestern universit

Civilian moral injury: associations with trauma type and high-frequency heart rate variability in two trauma-exposed community-based samples.

BACKGROUND: Moral injury exposure (MIE) and distress (MID) may indirectly affect the relationship between trauma exposure and alterations in autonomic regulation [assessed via high-frequency heart rate variability (hfHRV)] in civilians, but this has not been tested in prior research. We conducted two exploratory studies to examine trauma types' associations with MIE and MID among civilian medical patients (Study 1) and explore how these facets may indirectly affect the relationship between trauma type and hfHRV among civilians seeking mental health services (Study 2). METHODS: Participants re

The Impact of Traumatic Experiences on Risky Sexual Behaviors in Black and White Young Adult Women.

BACKGROUND: Trauma exposure has been linked to risky sexual behavior (RSB), but few studies have examined the impact of distinct trauma types on RSB in one model or how the association with trauma and RSB may differ across race. PURPOSE: The objective of the current study was to examine the contribution of trauma exposure types to RSB-substance-related RSB and partner-related RSB identified through factor analysis-in young Black and White adult women. METHODS: We investigated the associations of multiple trauma types and RSB factor scores in participants from a general population sample of y

Posttraumatic stress disorder after sexual assault: its psychodynamics and treatment.

Sexual assault as a major psychological trauma and a crime of violence evokes immediate symptoms of posttraumatic stress and, for many victims, long-term posttraumatic psychological sequelae. The victim, as the recipient of the rapist's anger and need to control, experiences terror, fear of death, and helplessness. This results in classic posttraumatic symptoms of haunting, intrusive recollections, numbing or constriction of feelings and focus, and increased arousal. When this psychological trauma is not integrated, anxiety, depression, phobias, impaired sexual and social adjustment, negative

Childhood trauma and perceived parental dysfunction in the etiology of dissociative symptoms in psychiatric inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: Research on the etiology of dissociation in adults has focused primarily on childhood sexual abuse. The role of co-occurring chil … s were even more prominent. Highest dissociation levels were found in patients reporting cumulative sexual trauma (intrafamilial and extrafamilial) or both sexual and physical abuse. In particular, maternal dysfunction was related to the level of dissociation. With control for gender and age, stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that the severity of …

Religiosity and hazardous substance use: The moderating role of trauma-related shame.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hazardous substance use is a major public health concern among individuals with a history of sexual victimization. Although increased religiosity has been known to serve as a protective factor against hazardous substance use, religious individuals with a history of sexual victimization may be at a greater risk for hazardous substance use due to difficulties reconciling sexual victimization with their religious beliefs. Individuals with greater trauma-related shame may engage in hazardous substance use as a means of coping with the traumatic event. METHOD: The presen

Understanding Sexually Victimized Male Adolescents With Sexually Abusive Behaviors: A Narrative Review and Clinical Implications.

A high percentage of adolescents with sexually abusive behaviors have been found to have a history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). The purpose of this review is to synthesize literature specific to adolescents with sexually abusive behaviors who have histories of CSA. This review will explore characteristics of this subset of adolescents with sexually abusive behaviors, risk factors, etiological theories that aim to explain the pathway from childhood sexual victimization to sexually abusive behavior in adolescence, and the clinical implications of this literature. Using Kiteley and Stogdon's

Sexual Behavior Problems Among Sexually Abused Children: Associations With Co-Occurring Symptoms.

Sexual behavior problems (SBPs) and interpersonal SBPs (ISBPs) among sexually abused children often occur alongside a variety of other clinical difficulties, such as externalizing problems, attentional difficulties, social concerns, and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Yet, as few studies have examined these links in a multivariate manner, it is unclear which symptoms are most strongly related to SBPs and ISBPs. Research regarding children's reports of their difficulties and SBPs and ISBPs is also very limited. The current study investigated the relations between both caregiver- and child
