Restoration of shoulder motion using single- versus dual-nerve repair in obstetrical brachial plexus injury.

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare shoulder abduction and external rotation (ER) after single-nerve repair of the upper trunk alone versus dual-nerve repair of both the upper trunk and the suprascapular nerve. METHODS A retrospective chart review of a single surgeon's experience repairing obstetrical brachial plexus injuries between June 1995 and June 2015 was performed. Eight patients underwent repair of the upper trunk alone, and 10 patients underwent repair of the upper trunk and the suprascapular nerve. Shoulder abduction and ER ranges of motion (ROMs) (in degrees) were rec

Shoulder 3D range of motion and humerus rotation in two volleyball spike techniques: injury prevention and performance.

Repetitive stresses and movements on the shoulder in the volleyball spike expose this joint to overuse injuries, bringing athletes to a career threatening injury. Assuming that specific spike techniques play an important role in injury risk, we compared the kinematic of the traditional (TT) and the alternative (AT) techniques in 21 elite athletes, evaluating their safety with respect to performance. Glenohumeral joint was set as the centre of an imaginary sphere, intersected by the distal end of the humerus at different angles. Shoulder range of motion and angular velocities were calculated an

The safe zone for avoiding suprascapular nerve injury in bone block procedures for shoulder instability. A cadaveric study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to identify the safe zone in which the surgeon can place the screws for fixation of the coracoid graft during the Latarjet procedure to avoid injuries of the suprascapular nerve with the shoulder in internal and external rotation. METHODS: The dissection on twelve fresh-frozen shoulders was performed according to a standard posterior approach to the gleno-humeral joint. The suprascapular nerve and its branches for the infraspinatus muscle were identified at the spinoglenoid notch region. Then, the distance between the glenoid and the suprascapular nerve at

Deltoid muscle injury scratched by an osteophyte on the greater tuberosity of the humeral head: an unusual cause of shoulder pain.

Few reports to date have discussed acute deltoid muscle injury, including partial or complete deltoid muscle detachment from its origin. The present report describes a different pathomechanism and clinical manifestations of deltoid muscle injury. A 52-year-old man experienced acute severe pain in the right shoulder as a result of abrupt elevation of the arm. The deltoid muscle had apparently been scratched by an osteophyte on the greater tuberosity. After arthroscopic excision of the osteophyte, the symptoms resolved completely.

Comparison of upper arm kinematics during a volleyball spike between players with and without a history of shoulder injury.

Volleyball players are at high risk of overuse shoulder injuries, with spike biomechanics a perceived risk factor. This study compared spike kinematics between elite male volleyball players with and without a history of shoulder injuries. Height, mass, maximum jump height, passive shoulder rotation range of motion (ROM), and active trunk ROM were collected on elite players with (13) and without (11) shoulder injury history and were compared using independent samples t tests (P < .05). The average of spike kinematics at impact and range 0.1 s before and after impact during down-the-line and cro

Effects of Contralateral Trunk Tilt on Shoulder and Elbow Injury Risk and Pitching Biomechanics in Professional Baseball Pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Baseball pitchers employ various contralateral trunk tilt (CTT) positions when pitching depending on if they have an overhand, three-quarter, or sidearm delivery. There are no known studies that have examined how pitching biomechanics are significantly different in professional pitchers with varying amounts of CTT, which may provide insight into shoulder and elbow injury risk among pitchers with different CTT. PURPOSE: To assess differences in shoulder and elbow forces and torques and baseball pitching biomechanics in professional pitchers with maximum 30° to 40° CTT (MaxCTT), mod

Validity and Reliability of Wearable Motion Sensors for Clinical Assessment of Shoulder Function in Brachial Plexus Birth Injury.

The modified Mallet scale (MMS) is commonly used to grade shoulder function in brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) but has limited sensitivity and cannot grade scapulothoracic and glenohumeral mobility. This study aims to evaluate if the addition of a wearable inertial movement unit (IMU) system could improve clinical assessment based on MMS. The system validity was analyzed with simultaneous measurements with the IMU system and an optical camera system in three asymptomatic individuals. Test-retest and interrater reliability were analyzed in nine asymptomatic individuals and six BPBI patients

Shoulder Arthrodesis versus Upper Trapezius Transfer for Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injury: A Proportional Meta-Analysis.

Shoulder arthrodesis and upper trapezius transfer are two surgical options for secondary shoulder reconstruction for traumatic brachial plexus injury (BPI). There is a lack of comparative evidence to guide the choice for one procedure over the other. The objectives of this study were to compare (1) rates of complications and reoperation and (2) shoulder range of motion and functional outcome scores following shoulder arthrodesis versus upper trapezius transfer for traumatic BPI. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted by a search of four databases of studies assessing shoulder art
