Guamanian Suncus murinus responsiveness to emetic stimuli and the antiemetic effects of 8-OH-DPAT.

The Japanese Suncus murinus, the house musk shrew, is a small insectivore commonly used in emetic research. The Guamanian S. murinus has not had extensive testing as an emetic model, but it is readily available for use in emetic experiments in the United States, unlike the Japanese Suncus. This study determined that Guamanian S. murinus is an acceptable model for emesis research and its differences from the Japanese strain were examined. Motion and nicotine were used as emetic stimuli and comparable doses of 8-OH-DPAT were used to compare emetic susceptibility to the Japanese strain. The Guama

Influence of the mechanism of transmission of the infective agent on the aetiological structure of leptospiral foci.

It has been demonstrated that the differences observed in the aetiological structure of the individual foci of leptospirosis can be explained not only by the affinity of leptospiral serogroups to certain animal species, but also by different mechanisms of transmission of the causative agent of leptospiral infection which can be transferred both by sexual and alimentary routes (in water). It has been demonstrated that mostly one serotype of leptospires predominates in natural foci of leptospirosis, but several in anthropurgic ones. In the author's opinion, leptospiral infection in natural foci

Rodent and scrub typhus survey in a ricefield at Kramat Tunngak area, Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Trapping of small mammals in a ricefield at Kramat Tunggak around Tanjung Priok in Jakarta city, was carried out from July 1977 through June 1978. Of three species of rodents, R.argentiventer was found to be the predominant species in the ricefield. R.r.diardii was an intermittent resident, and the presence of R.norvegicus was interesting observation. S.murinus, a house shrew, was also present. R.argentiventer was the dominant species during the periods when the rice grains were available as a source of food. Infestation with Gamasid mites and non-vector chiggers was found common in all rodent

Thinking inside and outside the box: Comparing the efficacy of camera trap designs for surveying small mammals.

BACKGROUND: Small mammals are vital to ecosystem health and serve as key indicators of environmental changes. Population trends in the UK fo … tween boxed and NCT designs. There was evidence of differences in detection among box designs, with shrews being more frequently detected by TCTs (n = 196), and voles more frequently detected by OCTs (n = 273). DISCUSSION: Boxed traps aided species identification but were affected by camera focal issues, which could be mitigated with low-cost adaptation …

Drivers of Bartonella infection in micromammals and their fleas in a Mediterranean peri-urban area.

People living at the human/wildlife interface are at risk of becoming infected with Bartonella for which micromammals act as reservoir. We aimed to determine the factors related to the prevalence of Bartonella and its haplotype diversity in micromammals and in their fleas in a Mediterranean peri-urban environment. We analyzed 511 micromammals, chiefly 407 wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), captured into Barcelona metropolitan area (Spain) in spring and autumn from 2011 to 2013 in two natural and two adjacent residential areas, their fleas (grouped in 218 monospecific pools) and 29 fetuses from s

Developmental study of Taenia mustelae in the intermediate and definitive hosts, with a note on the life cycle of T. mustelae in Hokkaido, Japan.

The gray red-backed vole Clethrionomys rufocanus bedfordiae and laboratory mice were fed eggs of Taenia mustelae via a stomach tube. Fully developed metacestodes were recovered from the voles fed the eggs at 25 days postinfection; voles were considered to be more suitable intermediate hosts for T. mustelae than laboratory mice. The prepatent period for the metacestodes from voles was shorter (16 days) in the mink than previously reported. A field survey was performed on hepatic cestodes of small mammals in Hokkaido, Japan in August 1993. We found T. mustelae metacestodes from C. rufocanus bedf

A novel dodecadepsipeptide, cereulide, is an emetic toxin of Bacillus cereus.

A vacuole-formation substance, cereulide of Bacillus cereus, is an emetic toxin in animals. Both oral administration and intraperitoneal injection of cereulide caused dose-dependent emesis in Suncus murinus, a new animal model of emesis. Vagotomy or a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist completely abolished this emetic effect. Therefore, cereulide causes emesis through the 5-HT3 receptor and stimulation of the vagus afferent. We also found that our purified cereulide caused swelling of mitochondria of HEp-2 cells.

CCNB1IP1 regulatory evolution underlies gradual increases in cortical size and folding in primates.

The gradual expansion and folding of the cortex are key factors in human cognitive evolution, yet their molecular underpinnings remain not well understood. Here we identify cyclin B1 interacting protein 1 (CCNB1IP1) gene as a key regulator of human brain evolution using tree shrew as an outgroup. In primates, CCNB1IP1 acquired brain expression and gradually increased its expression during evolution, mirroring the increase of cortical size and folding. Comparative analysis of cis-regulatory elements reveals evolutionary changes underlying the increase of CCNB1IP1 expression. Overexpression of C

Rabl orientation of CENP-B box sequences in Tupaia belangeri fibroblasts.

The chromosomes of the tree shrew Tupaia belangeri exhibit highly localized CENP-B box sequences in the centromeric regions of most chromosomes. Telomeric sequences are present at the ends of all chromosomes and, in addition, at specific interstitial chromosomal sites that likely represent remnants of ancestral telomeres. This suggests that Robertsonian and tandem chromosome fusion events have occurred in the karyotypic evolution of Tupaiidae. In Tupaia skin fibroblasts CENP-B boxes are almost always clustered together at one pole of the interphase nucleus, whereas the telomeric domains are re

Comparative morphology of the visual system of some Japanese species of Soricoidea (Superfamily) in relation to leif habits.

In some species of Japanese Soricoidea, Sorex shinto, Mogera wogura wogura, Mogera wogura kobeae, Dymecodon pilirostris, and Urotrichus talpoides, the cytoarchitecture of the eyeball and its accessory organs, the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, the superior colliculus, the lateral posterior nucleus of the thalamus and the visual cortex were investigated in correlation with life habits. In Sorex, living preominantly on the ground, there is a duct-like palpebral fissure, and most of the parts of the visual system are well developed in adaptation to its life habits. Emmetropization was thought to result from a genetically determined process until later discoveries found that myopia could be induced, whic … nd articles involving a wide range of animal models, such as chicks, guinea pigs, monkeys, and tree shrews, were reviewed in this review. Numerous studies collectively revealed that emmetropization is a complicated process involving the interaction of multiple factors, such as longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA), temporal frequency, bandwidth of ligh …

GIP receptor agonism blocks chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

OBJECTIVE: Nausea and vomiting remain life-threatening obstacles to successful treatment of chronic diseases, despite a cadre of available a … isplatin-treated rats. Strikingly, GIPR agonism blocks cisplatin-induced emesis in both ferrets and shrews. CONCLUSION: Our multispecies study defines a peptidergic system that represents a novel therapeutic target for the management of CINV, and potentially other drivers of nausea/emesis.

Evolution of Venomous Cartilaginous and Ray-Finned Fishes.

Venom and its associated delivery systems have evolved in numerous animal groups ranging from jellyfishes to spiders, lizards, shrews, and the male platypus. Building off new data and previously published anatomical and molecular studies, we explore the evolution of and variation within venomous fishes. We show the results of the first multi-locus, ordinal-level phylogenetic analysis of cartilaginous (Chondrichthyes) and ray-finned (Actinopterygii) fishes that hypothesizes 18 independent evolutions of this specialization. Ancestral-states reconstruction indicates that among the 2386-2962 extan…

The relationship between the tick-borne encephalitis virus and the ticks and mammals of the Tribec mountain range.

The basic problem in the study of tick-borne virus diseases is to establish where the virus is maintained in nature. In general, this focus … ng mammals, but this is a less important mechanism. Among the mammals, the insectivores (hedgehogs, shrews and moles) and certain rodents are hosts of ticks and reservoirs of TBE virus of great importance. During spring, game and farm animals play an important role and birds are important hosts when the number of small mammals is low. Thus the survival o …

Kyasanur Forest disease: an emerging arboviral threat.

Kyasanur Forest disease is a neglected tick-borne viral haemorrhagic fever endemic to India's Western Ghats, caused by the Kyasanur Forest disease virus, a flavivirus transmitted by Haemaphysalis spinigera ticks. The virus circulates in a sylvatic cycle among monkeys, rodents, shrews, birds, and ixodid ticks, and is transmitted to humans incidentally via tick bites. Since its discovery in 1957 in Karnataka, Kyasanur Forest disease has spread to other Indian states, driven by deforestation, forest fragmentation, and increased human incursion into wildlife habitats. Clinically, the disease manif…

GIP Receptor Agonism Attenuates GLP-1 Receptor Agonist-Induced Nausea and Emesis in Preclinical Models.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists decrease body weight and improve glycemic control in obesity and diabetes. Patient compliance and maximal efficacy of GLP-1 therapeutics are limited by adverse side effects, including nausea and emesis. In three different species (i.e., mice, rats, and musk shrews), we show that glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor (GIPR) signaling blocks emesis and attenuates illness behaviors elicited by GLP-1R activation, while maintaining reduced food intake, body weight loss, and improved glucose tolerance. The area postrema and nucleus t…

The major symptoms of motion sickness are well known and include facial pallor, nausea and vomiting, and sweating, but it is poorly recogniz … ssed phylogenetically as, besides humans, it could be provoked in several other animals (rats, musk shrews, and mice). Evidence from human and animal experiments indicates that the physiologic mechanisms responsible for the motion sickness-induced hypothermia include cutaneous vasodilation and sweating (leading to an increase of heat loss) and reduced th …
