Philosophy has long been concerned with 'moral status'. Discussions about the moral status of children, however, seem often to promote confusion rather than clarity. Using the creation of 'savior siblings' as an example, this paper provides a philosophical critique of the moral status of children and the moral relevance of parenting and the role that formative experience, regret and relational autonomy play in parental decisions. We suggest that parents make moral decisions that are guided by the moral significance they attach to children, to sick children and most importantly, to a specific s…

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary involvement has been described in all types of Gaucher disease (GD) but it is considered as relatively rare manifestation. There are reports suggesting that homozygosity for L444P mutation in GBA gene is associated with a substantial risk for developing primary pulmonary disease in GD.
CASE REPORT: We reported sisters with pulmonary involvement in GD type III. Respiratory failure with fatal outcome at 3 years and 4 months of age occurred in K.K. due to pulmonary complications of GD. At the time enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) was not available in Serbia. J.K., homozyg

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of hair loss in adults, but it has been rarely reported in children. We report two cases of AGA in two siblings, aged 6 and 8, whose mother had the same condition, without any association with other skin diseases or abnormalities in endocrinologic examinations.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study of the process of grandparent involvement with siblings of preschool children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
BACKGROUND: An increasing number of grandparents are involved in parental or near-parental roles with their grandchildren. Most research concerns grandparent involvement due to parental issues (e.g. teenage pregnancy, mental illness, addiction). Some research addresses grandparent involvement when their grandchild is ill. Grandparents''double concern' for both their adult children and their ill grandchildren is reported in the literature. I…

The conditions like gynaecomastia and hypospadius are not uncommon. Approximately 40% of normal men have palpable breast tissue. Hypospadius affects in excess of 1 in 300 boys. But the two conditions together occur very rarely and that too in the siblings. Two brothers in the same family of 16 and 14 years of ages reported with the complaints of bilateral gynaecomastia and hypospadius. USG of breasts of both the brothers revealed well developed duct system. LH, FSH, testosterone, oestradiol levels were within normal limits. Hypospadius was corrected by staged procedure. Gynaecomastia was treat…

Raine syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the FAM20C gene. FAM20C codes for the human homolog of DMP4, a dentin matrix protein highly expressed in odontoblasts and moderately in bone. DMP4 is probably playing a role in the mineralization process. Since the first case reported in 1989 by Raine et al. 21 cases have been published delineating a phenotype which associates dysmorphic features, cerebral calcifications, choanal atresia or stenosis and thoracic/pulmonary hypoplasia. Kan and Kozlowski suggested the name of Raine syndrome to describe this new lethal osteos

Familial studies and reports of co-occurrence of gender identity disorder (GID) within a family may help to clarify the question of whether transsexualism is a familial phenomenon. In a sample of 995 consecutive transsexual probands (677 male-to-female [MF] and 318 female-to-male [FM]), we report 12 pairs of transsexual non-twin siblings (nine pairs of MF siblings, two pairs of MF-FM siblings, and one pair of FM siblings). The present study doubles the number of case reports of co-occurrence of transsexualism in non-twin siblings available in the literature. According to our data, the probabil…

BACKGROUND: Takayasu disease is a giant cell arteritis, primarily affecting the aorta and its main branches, particularly over the first 1.5 cm. It is more common in South-East Asian countries and in young females, whose clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic to catastrophic neurological impairment.
CASE REPORT: We report on a Pakistani family in which five of seven siblings, aged 12 to 19 years, are affected with atypical Takayasu arteritis. The proband is a 14-year-old male who presented with sudden, painless loss of vision. He was found to have absent pulses, retinal changes and m…

OBJECTIVE: Siblings of individuals suffering from schizophrenia are an underrepresented group in research focussing on the needs of carers and relatives of psychiatric patients. The present study aims to investigate differences between siblings and parents as well as spouses, as regards help seeking, utilisation of an open group for relatives, their subjective burden and quality of life.
METHODS: 147 relatives of in-patients and patients attending a day hospital where assessed using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), the Family Problem Questionnaire (FPQ), the WHO Quality of Life-BREF (W…

Two sisters were admitted separately at different times (ages 15 and 12 years, respectively) to our unit because of amenorrhea, lack of secondary sex characteristics, and short stature. No evidence of other congenital anomalies was found. Laboratory studies indicated hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. Peripheral blood samples revealed normal 46,XX karyotype for both patients. No gonads were visualized by ultrasonography. The two cases underline the need to take familial ovarian dysgenesis into consideration in female patients with short stature, lack of secondary sex characteristics, normal karyo

Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) is a rare disease of unknown etiology characterized by intra-alveolar calcium deposits. More than 500 cases were reported in the literature. The disorder affects people at every age beginning from the early childhood. It occurs probably as a result of autosomal recessive transmission. Familial occurrence is often found with family history of the disease being present in up to 50% of the reported cases. We report PAM in 3 siblings.

The etiology of pemphigus vulgaris is still unknown. Reported familial cases are indicators of a genetic aspect of the disease. We report a brother and sister with simultaneous onset of pemphigus vulgaris. The class II antigens, HLA DRB1*04 and DQB1*03 were detected in both patients. The oral mucosa was affected in one them. Elevation of transaminase levels due to azathioprine therapy was observed in these two cases.

Valproate embryopathy is a well recognized syndrome caused by prenatal exposure to the anticonvulsant valproic acid (Depakote). We report five half-siblings with the same mother (four different fathers) who all have valproate embryopathy. Valproic acid was the sole anticonvulsant in all five pregnancies, with doses ranging from 500 to 2,000 mg per day. All children were examined by a clinical geneticist and developmental pediatrician, and had formal developmental testing. Mean birth weight at term was 2,900 g (range: 2,400-3,400 g). Common features in the five children included: flat, broad na…
