BACKGROUND: Sickle cell trait (SCT) has been associated with an increased risk of sudden death in athletes during strenuous exercise. In August 2010, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) began requiring athletes to be screened for SCT, provide proof of SCT status, or sign a waiver and launched an educational campaign for athletes, coaches, and medical staff. The impact of this program is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of death associated with sickle cell trait (daSCT) in NCAA athletes before and after legislation.
HYPOTHESIS: NCAA SCT legislat…

Sickle cell trait and certain renal disorders are disproportionately prevalent among African American individuals, so a clear understanding of their association is important. We conducted a longitudinal study using the Stanford Military Data Repository to examine sickle cell trait in relation to the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our study population consisted of African American U.S. Army soldiers on active duty between January 2011 and December 2014. The cumulative incidence was 0·51% for AKI (236 cases out of 45 901 soldiers) and 0·56% for CKD (255 …

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a common hemoglobin variant, particularly in patients of African descent. Patients with SCT have an increased risk of adverse ocular events following trauma with subsequent elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). The authors describe three cases of young males with peripheral vaso-occlusive events following ocular trauma with subsequent elevated IOP. These cases demonstrate the importance of careful peripheral exams in young patients with SCT following trauma. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina. 2019;50:e84-e87.].

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the association between sickle cell trait (SCT) as a binary variable and hemoglobin S percentage as a stratified categorical variable with aerobic and anaerobic fitness.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all recruits who entered US Air Force Basic Training between January 2009 and December 2014. Fitness parameters among recruits with and without SCT were compared using a standardized fitness assessment of a 1.5-mile timed run, 1 min of push-ups, and 1 min of sit-ups. Performance was further compared by stratifying those with SCT by their …

BACKGROUND: Carriers of the sickle cell trait (HbAS) usually remain asymptomatic. However, under conditions of low tissue oxygenation, red blood cell sickling and vascular obstruction may develop. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can arise from conditions promoting low-oxygen in kidney tissue, which may be aggravated by the presence of the sickle cell trait. In addition, CKD can arise from other genetic traits.
AIM: To compare the frequency of HbAS among hemodialysis patients and the general newborn population of Salvador (Bahia-Brazil), as well as to investigate the frequencies of apolipoprotein…

Sickle cell disease is a class of hemoglobinopathy in humans, which is the most common inherited disease in the world. Although complication … ment of antioxidant enzyme efficiency. In addition, recent studies in other diseases, as well as in sickle cell trait carriers and in a mouse model of sickle cell disease, have shown that regular physical activity could decrease oxidative stress. The purpose of this review is to summarize the role of oxidative stress in sickle cell disease and the effects of acute …

Sickle cell trait (SCT) affects 300 million people globally, and awareness is growing that SCT is not an entirely benign condition; however, most reported cases have been non-natural deaths. Autopsy records from the Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) in Dallas, Texas, contained seven natural deaths from January 2007 to October 2013 in which micro-occlusive sickling was identified at autopsy and SCT confirmed by postmortem hemoglobin fractionation. Sickle crisis was never diagnosed clinically. These cases illustrate the importance of red cell morphology in autopsy material. When sickling i…

Massive intraocular hemorrhage developed in a child with advanced unilateral retinoblastoma after intrarterial treatment with Melphalan and Topotecan. The child tested positive for sickle cell trait. Sickle cell trait may predispose such children to slower vascular transit time, hypoxia, sickling and vascular occlusion caused by catheter induced decreased flow. Enucleation confirmed the ultrasound and selective angiogram findings in addition to a completely calcified tumor. Clinicians should be on the lookout for the association of sickle-cell disease/trait and intraocular hemorrhages after in…

Drepanocytic anemia is an uncommon hereditary disease in Chile. The heterozygous state of drepanocytic anemia or "sickle trait" has a frequency of 8% among Afro-Americans. A small number of patients carrying hemoglobin S are homozygous, with clinical manifestations of hemolytic anemia and thrombotic disease. Sickle trait is usually asymptomatic. We report a 59-year-old male who presented an acute abdominal pain and dyspnea while staying at high altitude. Six days later, an angio CAT scan showed the presence of a subcapsular splenic hematoma that was managed conservatively. Sickle cell inductio

AIMS: To determine the effect of sickle cell trait on measurement of glycated haemoglobin (HbA(1c)) in African American patients with diabetes mellitus.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study including 885 outpatients who underwent HbA(1c) testing. Medical record review and sickle cell trait determinations based on the HbA(1c) assay were performed in African American participants. The relationship between HbA(1c) and serum glucose measurements was analysed.
RESULTS: Data were obtained from 385 AA (109 with SCT, 22 with haemoglobin C trait and 254 without haemoglobinopathy) and 500 European A…

The influence of sickle cell trait and/or alpha-thalassemia on skeletal muscle microvascular network characteristics was assessed and compared with control subjects [hemoglobin (Hb) AA] in 30 Cameroonian residents [10 HbAA, 5 HbAA alpha-thalassemia (alpha-t), 6 HbAS, and 9 HbASalpha-t] matched for maximal work capacity and daily energy expenditure. Subjects performed an incremental exercise to exhaustion and underwent a muscle biopsy. Muscle fiber type and surface area were not different among groups. However, sickle cell trait (SCT) was associated with lower capillary density (P < 0.05), lowe…

PURPOSE: To determine whether sickle cell trait (hemoglobin AS) is associated with abnormalities in the brain of asymptomatic children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and MR angiography were performed prospectively in 26 siblings (eight girls, 18 boys; mean age, 10.5 years) of patients with sickle cell disease. Two neuroradiologists, blinded as to whether a child had hemoglobin AS or AA, reviewed images obtained in siblings. With MR imaging, lacunae, loss of white matter volume, encephalomalacia, or leukoencephalopathy was identified. With MR angiography, arterial sten…
