Observation with long follow-up of the first 200 cases of intraocular injection of silicone combined with vitrectomy led us to discover three major complications: cataract, keratopathy and hypertonia, the last two found only in aphakic eyes. We report 158 silicone tubes placed in the lacrimal drainage systems in 150 patients. Intubation is indicated in the following: congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, fresh canalicular lacerations, primary canalicular disease, complicated dacryocystorhinostomies, canaliculorhinostomies, and failed dacryocystorhinostomies. The procedure may be useful prophylactically before surgery or radiation of the medial canthal region.

A poly(dimethylsiloxane) type silicone oil containing gamma-mercaptopropyl groups was evaluated for acute toxicity. Acute inhalation, oral and dermal toxicity, primary skin irritation, skin sensitization, eye irritation and human patch testing studies failed to demonstrate any significant response to this functional oil. Transient eye irritation and barely perceptible skin irritation were among the observations. On the basis of the data presented, it is doubtful that any problems of acute toxicity will result from the use of this silicone oil.

Silicone contact lenses were fitted postoperatively to 114 aphakic eyes (55 children, 59 adults) and followed up for a maximum of 2 years. Provided they were fitted carefully the lenses were well tolerated for surprisingly long periods of time.
