We report a case series of two patients who had similar skin pigmentation but were caused by vitamin B12 deficiency and Addison's disease. We further discuss the pathophysiology of skin hyperpigmentation in both of these disorders and the response to treatment. Our case report highlights the importance of the identification of simple bedside clinical signs to diagnose reversible causes of skin pigmentation.

Dorsal skin reactions to irradiation with two different types of ultraviolet (UV) light sources (sunlight and artificial UV light) were investigated in hairless descendants of Mexican hairless dogs. The total energy dose of solar UV exposure and artificial UV irradiation was 90 kJ/m2 and 40 kJ/m2, respectively. Histological examinations were done up to 7 days after UV irradiation (7 DAI). Photoprotection against ultraviolet A (UVA) by three sunscreens was evaluated in humans, with erythema and pigmentation used as end points in normal skin and in skin sensitized with 8-methoxypsoralen and anthracene. The test sunscreens were Parsol 1789 (2%), Eusolex 8020 (2%), and oxybenzone (3%). UVA was obtained from two filtered xenon-arc sources. INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous hyperchromias are disorders of skin pigmentation involving increased melanin production and its irregular accumulation in skin cells. The use of sunscreens is fundamental for the control of hyperchromias by reducing the stimulation of pigmentation, as melanin synthesis is mainly stimulated by solar radiation.
