Development of fetal and neonatal sleep and circadian rhythms.

The origin of sleep and circadian rhythms development is found during the fetal period. Both quiet (NREM) and active (REM) sleep are distinguishable during the last 10 weeks of gestation. Comparable to fetuses, low risk preterm infants recorded at 30-40 weeks postconceptional age, had a similar development of sleep i.e. an increase in quiet sleep and a decrease in indeterminate sleep. A further development in sleep organization characterized by increased slow wave and spindle activity during quiet sleep and coupling with circadian rhythm takes place during the first 6 months of life in both te

Baseline delta sleep ratio predicts acute ketamine mood response in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep slow wave activity (SWA; EEG power between 0.6 and 4Hz) has been proposed as a marker of central synaptic plasticity. Decreased generation of sleep slow waves--a core feature of sleep in depression--indicates underlying plasticity changes in the disease. Various measures of SWA have previously been used to predict antidepressant treatment response. This study examined the relationship between baseline patterns of SWA in the first two NREM episodes and antidepressant response to an acute infusion of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist ketam

Basic anatomy and physiology of sleep.

This paper seeks to give a basic look at the structure and physiology of those aspects of the nervous and respiratory systems most involved with the cycles of sleep. The brain is examined from the hindbrain (the medulla and the pons) to the midbrain up through the forebrain (the diencephalon and the telencephalon). Also noted are structures that may have a role in sleep and wake cycles, such as the reticular activating system, the red nucleus, basal ganglia, pineal gland, and the like. The respiratory system's structure and physiology is discussed in broad terms. Some of the other factors invo

Protocol for modulating anesthesia delta oscillations using closed loop auditory stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: Delta waves (0.1-4 Hz) are a hallmark of unconsciousness in both sleep and general anesthesia (GA). Closed-loop auditory stimulation (CLAS) delivers brief sounds phase-locked to ongoing slow oscillations and can modulate slow-wave activity (SWA) during sleep, but its efficacy and translational relevance under propofol anesthesia, particularly in the presence of nociceptive input, remain unknown. METHODS: We describe a prospective, within-subject protocol in 30 neurologically healthy adults undergoing elective surgery under propofol GA. Intraoperative high-density electroencephal

Sleep disturbances in ankylosing spondylitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare sleep outcomes of AS patients and controls. Six electronic databases were searched: PubMed, Embase, IndMed, Cochrane Library, CNKI and Web of Science. Statistical analyses were executed using Revman 5.3 software. Nine studies and a total of 3169 participants were included in the meta-analysis. When sleep was assessed using PSQI, significant differences were observed in subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep efficiency, sleep disorders, sleep medication use and total PSQI between patients with AS and controls, and subjective sleep quality was

Sleep duration and progression to sarcopenia in Japanese community-dwelling older adults: a 4 year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying factors that contribute to the development of sarcopenia in older adults is a public health priority. Although several studies have examined the association between sleep duration and sarcopenia, additional evidence is needed to reveal the causality of this association, especially from a longitudinal study. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether sleep duration was associated with the progression to sarcopenia and its subcomponents among community-dwelling older adults in Japan. METHODS: A total of 3918 older community-dwelling people (mean age: 73.2 ±

Alternating vigilance states: new insights regarding neuronal networks and mechanisms.

Since the discovery of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (also known as paradoxical sleep; PS), it is accepted that sleep is an active process. PS is characterized by EEG rhythmic activity resembling that of waking with a disappearance of muscle tone and the occurrence of REMs, in contrast to slow-wave sleep (SWS, also known as non-REM sleep) identified by the presence of delta waves. Here, we review the most recent data on the mechanisms responsible for the genesis of SWS and PS. Based on these data, we propose an updated integrated model of the mechanisms responsible for the sleep-wake cycle. T

Longitudinal Sleep Spindle Maturation Trajectories and Their Association With Internalizing Problems in Adulthood.

Extensive cortical refinement from childhood to adulthood coincides with heightened vulnerability to internalizing problems, such as anxiety and depression. Thalamocortical sleep spindles may provide neurophysiological indices of such vulnerability. In this longitudinal study (2009-2023), we examined developmental trajectories of slow (11-13 Hz) and fast (13-15 Hz) spindle density across childhood (≈9.5 years), adolescence (≈16 years) and young adulthood (≈22.5 years), and tested whether individual differences in these trajectories were associated with internalizing problems during adulthood.

Thalidomide, a hypnotic with immune modulating properties, increases cataplexy in canine narcolepsy.

Thalidomide is a sedative hypnotic that was widely used in the 1950s but was withdrawn due to its teratogenic properties. The compound has recently been reintroduced as an immune modulating agent. Thalidomide significantly aggravates canine cataplexy, a pathological manifestation of rapid eye movement (RFM) sleep atonia seen in narcolepsy. This compound also increases REM sleep and slow wave sleep in these animals. In vitro receptor binding and enzyme assays demonstrate that thalidomide does not bind to or enzymatically modulate the neurotransmitter systems reported to be involved in the regul

Sleep in Alzheimer's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of polysomnographic findings.

Polysomnography (PSG) studies of sleep changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) have reported but not fully established the relationship between sleep disturbances and AD. To better detail this relationship, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of reported PSG differences between AD patients and healthy controls. An electronic literature search was conducted in EMBASE, MEDLINE, All EBM databases, CINAHL, and PsycINFO inception to Mar 2021. Twenty-eight studies were identified for systematic review, 24 of which were used for meta-analysis. Meta-analyses revealed significant reductions

[Sleep in fibromyalgia: review of clinical and polysomnographic data].

Fibromyalgia syndrome is a common chronic pain syndrome that is often associated with sleep disturbances characterized by subjective experience of non-restorative sleep. The complaints of sleep disturbances are correlated with polysomnographic features showing clear abnormalities in the continuity of sleep as well as in the sleep architecture. Sleep-recording abnormalities are characterized by a reduced sleep efficiency with increased number of awakenings, a reduced amount of slow wave sleep and an abnormal alpha wave intrusion in non rapid eye movement, termed alpha-delta sleep. These data we

Negative symptoms in schizophrenia.

Clinical heterogeneity is a confound common to all of schizophrenia research. Deficit schizophrenia has been proposed as a homogeneous disease entity within the schizophrenia syndrome. Utilizing the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome (SDS) has allowed the definition of a subgroup dominated by persistent clusters of negative symptoms. While a number of studies have appeared over the years examining the electrophysiological correlates of the cluster of negative symptoms in schizophrenia, only a few studies have actually focused on the deficit syndrome (DS). PubMed as well as MEDLINE were searched

Autonomic effects of refractory epilepsy on heart rate variability in children: influence of intermittent vagus nerve stimulation.

AIM: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a therapeutic option for individuals with refractory epilepsy. Individuals with refractory epilepsy are prone to dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Reduced heart rate variability is a marker of dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Our goal was to study heart rate variability in children with refractory epilepsy and the influence of VNS on this parameter. METHODS: In 17 children (13 male; four female; mean age 7 y 6 mo; age range 3-16 y) with refractory epilepsy, electroencephalographic and electrocardiographic data were obtained before a

Cholinergic REM sleep induction test in subjects at high risk for psychiatric disorders.

The influence of the cholinergic agonist RS 86 on electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep was investigated in 21 healthy members of families identified as being at high risk for psychiatric disorders and in 17 healthy control subjects without any personal or family history of a psychiatric illness. In comparison to the placebo night, the administration of RS 86 led to a shortening of rapid eye movement (REM) latency in both groups. This effect, however, was much more pronounced in the high-risk group, whereas in the control subjects the arousal system and the slow-wave sleep during the first nonRE

The visual scoring of sleep and arousal in infants and children.

Age is probably the single most crucial factor determining how humans sleep. Age and level of vigilance significantly influence the electroencephalogram (EEG) and the polysomnogram (PSG). The Pediatric Task Force provide an evidence-based review of the age-related development of the polysomnographic features of sleep in neonates, infants, and children, assessing the reliability and validity of these features, and assessing alternative methods of measurement. We used this annotated supporting text to develop rules for scoring sleep and arousals in infants and children. A pediatric EEG or PSG ca

Polysomnographic study of nocturnal sleep in idiopathic hypersomnia without long sleep time.

We investigated nocturnal sleep abnormalities in 19 patients with idiopathic hypersomnia without long sleep time (IH) in comparison with two age- and sex- matched control groups of 13 normal subjects (C) and of 17 patients with narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC), the latter considered as the extreme of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Sleep macro- and micro- (i.e. cyclic alternating pattern, CAP) structure as well as quantitative analysis of EEG, of periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS), and of muscle tone during REM sleep were compared across groups. IH and NC patients slept more than C s

A review of the usefulness of the standard EEG in psychiatry.

The goal of this paper is to draw conclusions about the usefulness of the standard EEG in psychiatry. In general, two thirds of psychiatric referrals for an EEG are expected to provide useful information. The emphasis in schizophrenia is placed on left-sided abnormalities, especially on the left temporal area. In mood disorders the emphasis is on right-sided foci, in addition to the controversial 6/sec spike and wave complexes, small sharp spikes and positive spikes. In the acute stage of alcoholism, a relationship is seen between the degree of intoxication and the amount of slow activity, whi

NREM sleep EEG activity and procedural memory: A comparison between young neurotypical and autistic adults without sleep complaints.

UNLABELLED: Delta EEG activity (0.75-3.75 Hz) during non-Rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep reflects the thalamo-cortical system contribution to memory consolidation. The functional integrity of this system is thought to be compromised in the Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This lead us to investigate the topography of NREM sleep Delta EEG activity in young adults with ASD and typically-developed individuals (TYP). The relationship between Delta EEG activity and sensory-motor procedural information was also examined using a rotary pursuit task. Two dependent variables were computed: a learning in
