Retroperitoneal fibroids are a rare condition that is often misdiagnosed preoperatively. It typically occurs in women with a history of hysterectomy or myomectomy for benign uterine smooth muscle tumors. In this case report, we present the case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with discomfort in the right perineal area. Imaging showed a large retroperitoneal tumor. The patient underwent robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery to remove the mass, which was confirmed by histopathological analysis to be a uterine smooth muscle tumor of undetermined malignant potential (STUMP). The patient had n…

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS), together with smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) and benign leiomyomas, belongs to a heterogeneous group of uterine neoplasms. According to the World Health Organization, tumors originating from uterine smooth muscle fibers are the second most frequent tumors. It is challenging to distinguish between STUMP and LMS because of an overlap of symptoms, lack of a precise definition, and unequivocal information obtained using imaging diagnostic methods. Following myomectomy or hysterectomy with laparoscopic or laparotomy surgery and a de…

CONTEXT: Perivascular epithelial cell tumors (PEComas) are a family of rare mesenchymal neoplasms which share cellular, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural characteristics but are found in different visceral and soft tissue sites. PEComas of the pancreas are extremely rare neoplasms.
CASE REPORT: We describe a 49-year-old male who was incidentally diagnosed with a pancreatic mass. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided biopsy suggested a PEComa. An uneventful pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was thus performed. The tumor was a solid well-circumscribed mass in the pancreatic head with dila

Lipoleiomyoma is a rare, benign leiomyoma variant. It is relatively common in the uterine area of the female reproductive system but rare in other areas and has not been reported in the fallopian tubes. In this paper, we report a perimenopausal woman with a lipoleiomyoma arising from the ampulla of the fallopian tube with hydropic degeneration. What makes this case even rarer is the combination of hydrops of the pelvis and the abdominal cavity. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of smooth muscle tissue mixed with varying amounts of mature adipose tissue. The immunohistochemical markers we

Cutaneous leiomyomas of the breast are extremely rare, particularly in men. Leiomyomas are categorized into three groups: angioleiomyomas, pilar leiomyomas and genital leiomyomas. Angioleiomyomas, or vascular leiomyomas, are benign tumors arising from smooth muscle cells of arterial or venous walls. We report the case of a 70-year-old man who was admitted to the surgery unit because of a painful lump in the left periareolar region. Ultrasound investigation showed a well-delimited, hyperechogenic, inhomogeneous nodular lesion. The final diagnosis was made after surgical excision and pathologica

The authors describe a primary sarcoma of the brain with immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features of leiomyosarcoma as well as epithelioid hemangiosarcoma. The leiomyosarcomatous component consisted of spindle cells with well-developed external lamina, subsarcolemmal densities composed of microfilaments, pinocytic vesicles, and abundant intermediate filaments, and showed immunohistochemical reactions for smooth muscle actin. The epithelioid part of the tumor contained scattered cells reactive for alkaline phosphatase as well as CD31 and factor VIII. Many epithelioid cells were lipidize

Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma ("Sternberg tumor") is an unusual type of a benign uterine smooth-muscle tumor with a distinctive gross appearance. A 57-year-old woman (gravida 7, para 6), in menopause for 3 years, presented with a 3-4-year history of increased pelvic pain. The transvaginal ultrasound scan showed a 2.5 cm sized heterogenic mass in the uterus cavity and 4 × 5 cm sized irregular contoured mass in the right lateral aspect of the uterus. Total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed with removal of the pelvic tumor extension. Definite pathologic

OBJECTIVE: Epithelioid angiomyolipomas (AML) of the kidney are malignant tumors with aggressive clinical behavior.
METHODS: We reviewed cases of epithelioid AML recently diagnosed at our institution to highlight the spectrum of clinical presentations.
RESULTS: In all cases, renal lesions seen on computed tomography were suspicious for renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Histologically, these tumors can resemble RCC. The diagnosis of epithelioid AML was established by positive staining for melanoma and smooth muscle cell markers, and presence of perivascular epithelioid cells. One patient presented w

A case of a bizarre leiomyoblastoma (epithelioid leiomyosarcoma) which developed in the uterus of a 64-year-old woman and showed a malignant clinical course was reported. Histologically, the tumor in the present case had a number of bizarre giant cells, while the portion showing an epithelioid pattern was minor. Since the existence of an intimate inter-relationship between tumor cells and the smooth muscles of the blood vessel wall was a characteristic finding in the present case, a possible role of vascular smooth muscles as a tumorigenic matrix was suggested. Because of the closure of the in

The subject was an 85-year-old woman, who had been diagnosed as having an ovarian cancer and carcinomatous peritonitis and had been treated conservatively. She subsequently died from respiratory and renal insufficiency, and the autopsy that followed revealed that her pelvic cavity had been filled by a tumorous mass that size of a child's head. Histologically, the tumor was a serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary. Moreover another tumor, also the approximate size of a child's head, was found sited extramurally, beneath the posterior wall mucosa of the stomach body. Histological inspection of t

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcoma of the vulva is a rare mesenchymal tumor. Biologic features of a low grade tumor were investigated by an immunohi … p53 protein overexpression and lymphatic cell infiltration besides adequate microvessel density for smooth muscle tumors. Since the immunohistochemical markers indicated a less aggressive tumor, any further adjuvant therapy was rejected. The patient was without recurrence 24 months later.
CONCLUSION: The immunohistologic profile proved the low histologic grade of vu …

The first Japanese case of nasal chondromesenchymal hamartoma, a rare infantile nasal neoplasm, is presented. A 4-month-old Japanese boy was referred to our Centre because of intranasal mass and oculomotor disturbance. Radiological images showed the intranasal tumor extending to the paranasal sinus, orbit, and anterior frontal fossa. Subtotal resection and radiation therapy to residual tumor were performed. There has been no recurrence of the tumor for 13 years. Histologically, the lesion demonstrated admixture of various mesenchymal elements, including cellular spindle cell stroma with occasi

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MC) arises from the myoepithelial cells. It is a rare tumor with a predilection for salivary glands. MC in soft tissue is uncommon. Soft tissue MC exhibits dual epithelial and smooth muscle phenotype. The extremities and limb girdles are commonly affected. We present cytological findings of retroperitoneal MC with an accurate diagnosis being rendered with the aid of immunocytochemistry on the cell block and demonstration of EWSR1 rearrangements by fluorescence in situ hybridization on cytology smear. The smears were cellular, showing loose clusters and sheets of tumor

Three cases of intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) of the uterus, a rare benign smooth-muscle tumor, are described. A preoperative diagnosis of IVL was not made in any of the patients, all of which presented with a pelvic mass with the presumptive diagnosis of leiomyoma. Surgical exploration confirmed the presence of uterine mass and two of the three cases showed extra-uterine extension into the ovarian or uterine veins. Histological examination demonstrated a fascicular pattern of bland spindle-shaped smooth-muscle cells, which extended to veins inside the myometrium or to extrauterine veins. Th

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyoma is a form of benign tumor originated in hypertrophy of the smooth muscles, which is most prevalent in the uterus and gastrointestinal tract. However, Leiomyoma originating from smooth muscle at the vessels lying on deep soft tissue is very rare.
CASE REPORT: Our case was a rare case of leiomyoma originating from the axillary region, which was initially diagnosed as a fibroadenoma on radiological examination. The mass was separated from surrounding tissues and totally resected. Pathologically, hematoxylin-eosin-stained biopsy tissue showed the typical findings of leiomy

Hemangioblastoma is a morphologically distinctive tumor that can occur sporadically or in association with von Hippel-Lindau disease, and which involves the central nervous system in the majority of the cases. Rare occurrences of hemangioblastoma in peripheral nerves and extraneural tissues have been reported. The histogenesis of this tumor remains uncertain. Various cell lineages such as vascular, glial, neural, fibrohistiocytic, and smooth muscle/myofibroblastic have been proposed for the so-called stromal cells, which are thought to represent the neoplastic component of these lesions. We report a case of a rare cystic renal tumor previously termed cystic hamartoma of the renal pelvis. A 53-year-old woman presented to her gynecologist with menometorrhagia. She subsequently had a computed tomographic scan that demonstrated an incidental cystic mass in the lower pole of the left kidney. Histologically, the tumor was composed of a mixture of benign mesenchymal and epithelial components. The stroma consisted of spindle cells with monomorphic nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm that resembled smooth muscle and that reacted positively with antibodies to alpha-smooth muscle

We report three cases of a unique, previously undescribed soft tissue tumor composed of mature adipocytes and hemangiopericytomatous areas, for which we propose the term lipomatous hemangiopericytoma. The tumors occurred in adults and were located in the sinonasal area, the soft tissue of the shoulder, and the retroperitoneum. The tumors ranged in size from 4 to 10 cm in greatest diameter and grossly were solid and ranged from tan to yellow. Histologically, they were composed of a variable admixture of benign lipomatous and hemangiopericytomatous components. Immunohistochemically, they stained

Epithelioid angioleiomyoma (EALM) is rare in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. To the best of our knowledge, only two previous cases of this tumor have been reported. We document here the case of an 83-year-old woman who underwent complete removal of a squamous cell carcinoma of the retromolar trigone and lymph node dissection of the neck. An incidental EALM was observed in the adipose tissue. The tumor formed a unilocular, poorly demarcated neoplasm measuring 0.3 cm, and showed cavernous angiomatous spaces with villiform growth of large epithelioid cells arranged in clusters. Besides the epi
