Stress, mental health, and burnout in national humanitarian aid workers in Gulu, northern Uganda.

This study examined the mental health of national humanitarian aid workers in northern Uganda and contextual and organizational factors predicting well-being. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 376 national staff working for 21 humanitarian aid agencies. Over 50% of workers experienced 5 or more categories of traumatic events. Although, in the absence of clinical interviews, no clinical diagnoses were able to be confirmed, 68%, 53%, and 26% of respondents reported symptom levels associated with high risk for depression, anxiety disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), res

[A short questionnaire for assessing the social climate on forensic psychiatric wards].

OBJECTIVE: To examine statistical properties and the validity of a ward climate questionnaire for forensic psychiatric institutions. The 15 item instrument comprises three climate dimensions: Patients' Cohesion and Social Support, Safety (vs. threat by aggression and violence) and Therapeutic Hold. METHOD: On 46 wards in 17 forensic hospitals in Germany, patients and staff filled in the climate questionnaire and further scales, among them the "Ward Atmosphere Scale" and a "Good Milieu Index". Problem events (e. g. wilful damage of property, drug relapse) were listed on each ward over a period

Repeated competition influences neural response, but not neurogenesis or physiology, in the fighting fish Betta splendens.

Territorial competition has costs such as wounds received, energy spent, and elevated chronic stress. How does Betta splendens, a species that has been artificially selected for enhanced territorial aggression, maintain high levels of metabolically costly displays (gill flaring) over repeated days of territorial competition? Here we conducted two experiments. The first exposed male Betta splendens to a size-matched unresolvable competition (a mirror) daily for three weeks. We found that Betta splendens indeed maintain gill flaring throughout the competition schedule and exhibited no baseline s

Neuropathology Studies of Dementia in US Persons other than Non-Hispanic Whites.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia are two of the most prevalent dementias that afflict the aging population in the United States (US). Studies have made great strides in understanding the neuropathology of these diseases; however, many studies are conducted in the context of non-Hispanic whites (NHWs), and few include the rapidly growing underrepresented populations that reside in the US. We sought to characterize current knowledge of the neuropathologic landscape of AD and vascular dementia of the largest growing US minority groups, namely Latinos/Hispanics, Black Americans, and

The role of the informal and formal organisation in voice about concerns in healthcare: A qualitative interview study.

The importance of employee voice-speaking up and out about concerns-is widely recognised as fundamental to patient safety and quality of car … nisation had a dark side, potentially subduing voice by creating informal hierarchies, prioritising social cohesion, and providing opportunities for retaliation. The formal and the informal organisation are not exclusive or independent: they interact with and mutually reinforce each other. Our findings have implications for efforts to improve culture and processe …

Health assets among refugees in Australia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A health assets-based approach seeks to identify health-promoting or protective factors across multiple levels. Evidence of the health assets of refugees at the individual, family, and community levels in Australia is scarce. We aimed to synthesise current evidence from Australia to identify refugee health assets and explore how they influence health and well-being. We explored existing strengths that can be harnessed to ensure sustainable, equitable, and culturally responsive health interventions. METHODS: We systematically reviewed qualitative and quantitative observational and

Perspectives of Key Partners on Improving Awareness of Virtual Harm Reduction Services: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Supervised Consumption Sites (SCS) have proven effective in reducing overdose-related deaths by providing safe spaces for people who use substances. However, barriers such as stigma, operating hours, and travel distance can limit access to SCS. Virtual harm reduction services such as phone-based overdose response hotlines and apps have emerged as an alternative when SCS access is hindered. These collectively have also been named Mobile Overdose Response Services (MORS). At this time, little is known about how best to increase awareness of these services. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For

Midwives' perceptions of organisational structures and processes influencing their ability to provide caseload care to socially disadvantaged and vulnerable women.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined midwives' perceptions of organisational structures and processes of care when working in a caseload model (Midwifery Group Practice MGP) for socially disadvantaged and vulnerable childbearing women. DESIGN: This study used Donabedian's theoretical framework for evaluating the quality of health care provision. Of the 17 eligible midwives, 15 participated in focus group discussions and two others provided written comments. Thematic analysis was guided by three headings; clinical outcomes, processes of care and organisational structure. FINDINGS: Midwives believed

The needs of young people with disabilities in transition from paediatric to adult services.

Transition to adulthood requires consolidation of identity, achievement of independence establishment of adult relationships and finding vocation. Those with disabilities and health problems experience difficulty in this through lack of social opportunity. There are 340,000 affected UK individuals of 16-29 years. Family interaction and a supportive social network as salutogenic factors in childhood atopic illness.

The role of psycho-social factors in the development of allergy was studied prospectively in 82 infants with a family history of atopy. The family participated in a standardized family test when the children were 18 months old. The ability to adjust to demands of the situation ('adaptability'), and the balance between emotional closeness and distance ('cohesion'), were assessed from videotapes by independent raters. Families rated as functional in both of these aspects were classified as 'functional', otherwise as 'dysfunctional'. The social network, life events, atopic symptoms (based on post

Network Structure of Dyspnea-Related Fear in Older Adults with Acute Exacerbation of COPD: A Biopsychosocial Network Model.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to construct a biopsychosocial network model of dyspnea-related fear in older adults with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), identify central and bridge nodes within the psychological system, and explore structural associations linking fear symptoms to emotional distress and functional impairment. METHODS: A total of 317 hospitalized older adults with AECOPD were enrolled. Eight variables were assessed, including fear of dyspnea (Fear-D), fear of activity (Fear-A), anxiety (Anx), depression (Dep), psychological resilience (Psy-R),

Participants with narcolepsy were matched 1:3 to participants without narcolepsy. Descriptive statistics and regression analyses (odds ratios [ORs]) summarized demographics, clinical comorbidities, and SDoH; hazard ratios (HRs) estimated risk of incident hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and coronary

Schizophrenics show a failure in the decoding of violations of conversational implicatures.

OBJECTIVES: Recent approaches to the 'theory of mind' and pragmatics support that, if we did not have any idea about what other people know, we could hardly use language effectively. Successful communication (the pragmatic aspect of language) depends on inferring the beliefs and intentions of the partner in the conversation. Such successful communication is linguistically realized in part by cohesion and in part by abiding by the maxims derived from the cooperative principle. However, the violations of the Gricean implicatures are generally used in everyday language, mainly to point at a hidde
