Social skill training and children's cognitive concentration in rural China: the mediating effect of social information processing skills.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive concentration refers to the learning orientation of children, encompassing the skills, attitudes, and behaviors exhibited by children in their pursuit of knowledge. Enhancing children's cognitive concentration through targeted social skills training holds notable importance for improving their classroom performance and academic achievement. METHODS: Drawing upon the social information processing (SIP) theory and the large-scale trial "Let's Be Friends (Shaanxi)" program with a randomized controlled experimental design, we employed structural equation modeling (SEM) t

Mentalising and social problem solving in adults with Asperger's syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: It is well established that autistic spectrum disorder is linked to difficulties with mentalising, but the ways in which this affects everyday behaviour is less well understood. This study explored the nature and extent of difficulties in everyday social functioning in adults with Asperger's syndrome (AS), since increased understanding can enhance the development of more effective intervention strategies. METHODS: Individuals with AS (n=21) were compared with healthy control participants (n=21) on three tests of social cognition: the Mentalistic Interpretation task, which assess

Dissociable Roles Within the Social Brain for Self-Other Processing: A HD-tDCS Study.

Theories of right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) function in social cognition include self-other distinction, self-inhibition, or embodied rotation, whereas the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) is associated with integrating social information. However, no study has provided causal evidence for dissociable roles of the rTPJ and dmPFC in social cognition. A total of 52 healthy young adults were stratified to receive either dmPFC or rTPJ anodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) in a sham-controlled, double-blinded, repeated measures design. Self-other proces

Toxic layering through three disciplinary lenses: childhood poisoning and street pesticide use in Cape Town, South Africa.

This article focuses on the devastating hidden perils of agricultural pesticides repurposed by informal sellers in urban South African townships to kill rats and other unwanted pests. Drawing on collaborative research techniques, we investigate the causal relationship between child poisoning episodes and the household use of illegal street pesticides. Such pesticides are used to safeguard homes from pests in an attempt to protect children from the harmful consequences of rodent bites and vectorborne diseases. Here, we consider the social injustice and economic inequality of episodes of child p

Loss of white matter connections after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its relationship to social cognition.

Adults with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often suffer poor social cognition. Social cognition is complex, requiring verbal, non-verbal, auditory, visual and affective input and integration. While damage to focal temporal and frontal areas has been implicated in disorders of social cognition after TBI, the role of white matter pathology has not been examined. In this study 17 adults with chronic, severe TBI and 17 control participants underwent structural MRI scans and Diffusion Tensor Imaging. The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT) was used to assess their ability to understand

Eyes tell all: Dissecting attentional bias in social anxiety through emotional faces.

The present study employed eye-tracking technology and a free-viewing paradigm to explore the mechanisms of attentional bias toward emotional faces in individuals with social anxiety, using real and cartoon faces (angry, happy, disgusted, neutral) as stimuli. In Experiment 1, socially anxious individuals demonstrated significantly reduced total fixation duration and count on the eye regions of all four emotional face types presented by real people compared to controls. They also showed shorter fixation durations and fewer fixations on the facial area associated with disgust for real faces. In

Pattern of brain activation during social cognitive tasks is related to social competence in siblings discordant for schizophrenia.

Measures of social competence are closely related to actual community functioning in patients with schizophrenia. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying competence in schizophrenia are not fully understood. We hypothesized that social deficits in schizophrenia are explained, at least in part, by abnormally lateralized patterns of brain activation in response to tasks engaging social cognition, as compared to healthy individuals. We predicted such patterns would be partly heritable, and therefore affected in patients' nonpsychotic siblings as well. We used a functional magnetic reso

Risk factors for rural young suicide in China: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the fifth most important cause of death in China and the leading cause of death among young adults aged 15-34 years. The suicide rate in rural China is three times higher than the urban suicide rate, and the rate in women is higher than in men. METHODS: Sixteen counties from three provinces were selected as sampling sites in which 392 suicide cases and 416 community living controls were obtained. For each suicide case and control there were two informants who provided the target person's information. A structured questionnaire including demographics, social and familial

Facial emotion recognition and empathy for pain in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Objective: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with cognitive decline, but its impact on social cognition remains poorly understood. This study investigated whether individuals with T2DM exhibit impairments in facial emotion recognition and empathy for pain, two domains crucial for daily interpersonal functioning that are often overlooked in neuropsychological assessments. Method: Seventy-six participants (37 with T2DM and 39 matched healthy controls) completed two validated social cognition tasks: a dynamic Facial Emotion Morphing Test and an empathy-for-pain task involving 25 anima

Gradient of Parvalbumin- and Somatostatin-Expressing Interneurons Across Cingulate Cortex Is Differentially Linked to Aggression and Sociability in BALB/cJ Mice.

Successfully navigating social interactions requires the precise and balanced integration of social and environmental cues. When such flexible information integration fails, maladaptive behavioral patterns arise, including excessive aggression, empathy deficits, and social withdrawal, as seen in disorders such as conduct disorder and autism spectrum disorder. One of the main hubs for the context-dependent regulation of behavior is cingulate cortex, specifically anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and midcingulate cortex (MCC). While volumetric abnormalities of ACC and MCC have been demonstrated in

Olfactory discrimination and memory deficits in the Flinders Sensitive Line rodent model of depression.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a heterogeneous psychiatric disorder with broad symptomatic manifestations. The current study examined, for the first time, olfactory memory and discrimination in the Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) rodent model of depression. Male FSL rats and controls were trained on an Olfactory Discrimination (OD) and a Social Interaction (SI) test. On the OD test, the FSL and controls performed similarly at the shortest inter-trial interval (5min), however, with extended delay of 30min, the FSLs had a recall and odour discrimination deficit. At the longest delay (60min) bo

Driving self-restriction and motor vehicle collision occurrence in glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To confirm that subjects with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) who avoid driving in high-risk situations are less likely to be involved in motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) than those who do not. METHODS: This study evaluated 252 consecutive Japanese aged between 40 and 85 years with POAG. All participants were requested to answer a questionnaire on their driving habits, including self-restriction in driving at night, in rain, in fog, on freeways, and lane changing, and history of MVCs. Those who reported restricting their driving in one or more ways constituted the self-restriction

Factors associated with residential mobility in children with leukemia: implications for assigning exposures.

PURPOSE: In epidemiologic studies, neighborhood characteristics are often assigned to individuals based on a single residence despite the fact that people frequently move and, for most cancer outcomes, the relevant time-window of exposure is not known. The authors evaluated residential mobility patterns for a population-based series of childhood leukemia cases enrolled in the Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study. METHODS: Complete residential history from 1 year before birth to date of diagnosis was obtained for 380 cases diagnosed between 1995 and 2002. All residences were assigned U

Social support networks and type of neurotic symptom among adults in British households.

BACKGROUND: Current knowledge about associations between psychosocial factors and non-psychotic symptoms provide little information about their relationship to specific types of neurotic symptoms such as symptoms of fatigue, worry, phobic anxiety and obsessional symptoms. METHOD: The British National Survey of Psychiatric Morbidity was based on a cross-sectional random sample of 10,108 householders. Neurotic symptoms were established by lay interviewers using the revised fully structured Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R). Subjects were asked about perceived social support, the size of their

Mothers' reproductive and medical history misinformation practices as strategies against healthcare providers' domination and humiliation in maternal care decision-making interactions: an ethnographic study in Southern Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women can misinform or withhold their reproductive and medical information from providers when they interact with them during care decision-making interactions, although, the information clients reveal or withhold while seeking care plays a critical role in the quality of care provided. This study explored 'how' and 'why' pregnant women in Ghana control their past obstetric and reproductive information as they interact with providers at their first antenatal visit, and how this influences providers' decision-making at the time and in subsequent care encounters. METHODS: T
