Experiences, barriers, and enablers of integrated HIV and sexual and reproductive health services in Nigeria: a qualitative study of service users and healthcare providers.

BACKGROUND: Integrating HIV and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services is a global priority for improving access to comprehensive, equitable, and people-centred care. However, people living with HIV (PLHIV) continue to experience unmet SRH needs, and evidence on how integrated services are experienced, delivered, and utilised in routine care settings remains limited in Nigeria. This study explored service users' and healthcare providers' experiences of integrated HIV-SRH services, including patterns of service delivery and utilisation, barriers, facilitators, and recommendations for str

Medical diagnosis of dyslexia in a Swedish elite school: A case of "consecrating medicalization".

Based on qualitative data of an upper-secondary school in Sweden's primary elite community, Djursholm, I propose how medical diagnosis of students as dyslexics contributes to consecrating them by offering a short cut to successful performance, while at the same time reproducing differences between social classes. The study suggests how students that do not score top can be labeled dyslexic and the social and moral consequences of that. I introduce the concept of "consecrating medicalization" in order to discriminate between the effects of medical diagnosis of members of different social classe

Integrating Community Health System Activities and Participation into the Primary Healthcare System for Ensuring Effective Community Participation and Achieving Health Goals in Nigeria.

Introduction: In Nigeria, communities have long organised health and social actions that address local needs but remain weakly integrated into the formal primary healthcare (PHC) system. Understanding these approaches and how they interface with PHC is important for advancing universal health coverage (UHC). Objective: This study examined community-driven health and social actions and explored pathways for their integration into the formal PHC system. Method: A qualitative study was conducted in three purposively selected Nigerian states: Anambra, Akwa Ibom, and Kano. Data were collected throu

Social Media as a Tool for Public Health: Reviewing the Use of Social Media for Disease Surveillance, Behavioral Change, and Misinformation Control.

Social media has transformed public health communication from a one-sided approach to a more interactive model, facilitating discussions on symptoms, treatments, and personal experiences among patients and caregivers, often without health professionals' involvement. Public health agencies recognised social media's potential for cost-effective, rapid outreach and real-time feedback, influencing health perceptions and behaviors. However, this platform also risks amplifying misinformation and conflicting narratives. Beyond communication, social media supports disease surveillance, influences heal

The Effect of Social Relationships on the Well-Being and Happiness of Older Adults Living Alone or with Relatives.

The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of the type of habitation of older adults-with relatives or alone-on their health and well-being. The participants were 352 people over 65 years of age who collaborated with the research on a voluntary basis. The data indicated that those who live with family members have better social integration, well-being and happiness than those who live alone. A multiple regression analysis showed the positive effect of living with relatives on well-being and happiness. However, participation in social activities mitigates the effect of the type of cohabitat…

A neurobiological perspective on social influence: Serotonin and social adaptation.

Humans are inherently social beings. Being suggestible to each other's expectations enables pro-social skills that are crucial for social learning and adaptation. Despite their high relevance for psychiatry, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying social adaptation are still not well understood. This review, therefore, provides a conceptual framework covering various distinct mechanisms underlying social adaptation and explores the neuropharmacology - in particular the role of the serotonin (5-HT) system - in modulating these mechanisms. This article reviews empirical results on social influ

Beyond the game: social interaction as a bridge from sports to community cohesion and belonging.

Although community sports are widely promoted to enhance social integration, the mechanisms linking individual participation to collective cohesion remain theoretically underdeveloped. Grounded in Social Capital Theory and Social Interaction Theory, this study seeks to explain how social interactions serve as a conduit for converting sports engagement into community assets. To achieve this, a cross-sectional design was adopted, utilizing validated measurement instruments to survey participants in community sports activities. Structural Equation Modeling was subsequently employed to uncover key…

Zoonotic and Vector-Borne Diseases in Urban Slums: Opportunities for Intervention.

Urban slums provide conditions that increase the risk of exposure to vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens. Large interventions, such as social and sanitary changes, are a priority but their implementation is challenging. Integration between the multidisciplinary understanding of pathogens' dynamics and community participatory approaches is a key prevention strategy.

Long-Term Impacts of Post-weaning Social Isolation on Nucleus Accumbens Function.

Adolescence is a period of incredible change, especially within the brain's reward circuitry. Stress, including social isolation, during this time has profound effects on behaviors associated with reward and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Because the Nucleus Accumbens (NAc), is crucial to the integration of rewarding stimuli, the NAc is especially sensitive to disruptions by adolescent social isolation stress. This review highlights the long-term behavioral consequences of adolescent social isolation rearing on the NAc. It will discuss the cellular and molecular changes within the NAc that

Rich Get Richer: Extraversion Statistically Predicts Reduced Internet Addiction through Less Online Anonymity Preference and Extraversion Compensation.

Internet addiction may arise from multiple factors and personality tendencies have been previously implicated. Prior studies have found that extraversion may be a protective factor mitigating against internet addiction, yielding a "rich-get-richer" effect. However, few studies have explored how extraversion may influence internet addiction from the perspective of online-offline integration. Drawing on a sample of 428 college students, the current study examined a serial mediation model exploring the underlying mechanisms of how extraversion may statistically predict internet addiction through

A Kuramoto model of self-other integration across interpersonal synchronization strategies.

Human social behaviour is complex, and the biological and neural mechanisms underpinning it remain debated. A particularly interesting social phenomenon is our ability and tendency to fall into synchronization with other humans. Our ability to coordinate actions and goals relies on the ability to distinguish between and integrate self and other, which when impaired can lead to devastating consequences. Interpersonal synchronization has been a widely used framework for studying action coordination and self-other integration, showing that even in simple interactions, such as joint finger tapping

The Social Skin: A Neuroaesthetic Theoretical Framework for Multimodal Subconscious Signaling in Human Attraction.

First-impression formation in humans occurs within 100 ms and demonstrates remarkable stability across cultures. The present manuscript advances a highly conceptual theoretical framework in which the integument is recognized as a bidirectional sensory-emissive organ instrumental to the first impressions projected and received. At least 5 biologically plausible signaling channels are proposed: (1) thermal infrared radiation; (2) ultraweak photon emission; (3) the cardiac electromagnetic field; (4) volatile chemosignals; and (5) affective touch mediated by C-tactile afferents. A subcortical-cort

Artificial intelligence-enabled social robots for facilitating social interactions in patients with dementia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The global rise in dementia, closely linked to aging populations, necessitates innovative interventions to address care challenges. Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Social Robots (AI-ESRs) present a promising approach by leveraging multi-modal communication to enhance social engagement and alleviate isolation. However, evidence regarding their efficacy remains inconsistent and fragmented. This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness of AI-ESRs in enhancing social interactions among people with dementia, examines factors contributing to outcome variability, and provides recomme

Understanding social factors and inequalities in health: 20th century progress and 21st century prospects.

The development of social epidemiology and medical sociology over the last half of the 20th century, in which Leo Reeder played a central role, transformed scientific and popular understanding of the nature and causes of physical health and illness. Viewed in the early 1950s as shaped almost entirely by biological processes and medical care, physical health and illness are now understood to be as much or more a function of social, psychological, and behavioral factors. Utilizing a stress and adaptation conceptual framework, social epidemiology has identified a broad range of psychosocial risk

[Neurological consequences of prematurity].

Very preterm infants are at risk of neurodevelopmental impairment. Severe disabilities (cerebral palsy, mental retardation) occur in around 10% of cases. The most frequent impairments concern cognitive and neurobehavioral development which usually express at school age. These disorders involve behavior, executive function, attention and speech development. All of these deficiencies can compromise learning functions, social interactions and school integration. Near 40% of very preterm infants need special therapies: psychological therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy... Environmental, educativ

Feeling low: How social media influences employees' knowledge hidings and innovative behavior.

Prior research has identified both positive and negative consequences arising from the widespread integration of social media within the organizations. The present research suggests that upward social comparison (USC) in social media is related to psychological disengagement resulting in knowledge hiding and lower innovative behavior of individuals. It further suggests that mindfulness mitigates the impact of USC in social media. A two-wave longitudinal survey reveals that individuals who engage in comparative self-assessment with friends projecting an aura of unattainable success on social me
