From tones in tinnitus to sensed social interaction in schizophrenia: how understanding cortical organization can inform the study of hallucinations and psychosis.

The content, modality, and perceptual attributes of hallucinations and other psychotic symptoms may be related to neural representation at a single cell and population level in the cerebral cortex. A brief survey of some principles and examples of cortical representation and organization will be presented together with evidence for a correspondence between the neurobiology of brain areas activated at the time of a hallucination and the content of the corresponding hallucinatory and psychotic experiences. Contrasting the hallucinations of schizophrenia with other conditions, we highlight phenom

Male-specific alteration in excitatory post-synaptic development and social interaction in pre-natal valproic acid exposure model of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by three main behavioral symptoms including social deficits, impaired communication, and stereotyped and repetitive behaviors. ASD prevalence shows gender bias to male. Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA), a drug used in epilepsy and bipolar disorder, induces autistic symptoms in both human and rodents. As we reported previously, prenatally VPA-exposed animals at E12 showed impairment in social behavior without any overt reproductive toxicity. Social interactions were not significantly different between mal…

Haven't we met somewhere before? The effects of a brief Internet introduction on social anxiety in a subsequent face to face interaction.

Social anxiety occurs in a range of social situations, the salience of which is influenced by prevailing modes of social contact. The emergence of computer mediated communication (CMC), buoyed by the recent explosion of social networks, has changed the way many people make and maintain social contacts. We randomly assigned 30 socially anxious and 30 low social anxiety participants to a brief internet chat introduction or a control internet surfing condition followed by a standardized face to face (FTF) interaction. We hypothesized that for socially anxious participants the chat introduction wo

Species-associated toxicological trajectories in social bees exposed to sublethal metribuzin: A multi-omics perspective on host-microbiome interactions.

The divergent sensitivities of honeybees (Apis mellifera) and bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) to agrochemicals challenge the one-species-fits-all framework of ecological risk assessment, yet the mechanistic basis for this variation remains underexplored. Here, we used an integrated multi-omic approach, combining transcriptomics, metabolomics, and gut metagenomics, to map the species-associated responses of these pollinators under sublethal metribuzin (MET) exposure (30 mg/kg). Honeybees, exhibited broad transcriptional activation accompanied by suppressed P450 and glutathione S-transferase (GST

Gaze crossing: a new paradigm to assess social contingency and word learning during real-time infant-adult interactions.

Children's social interactions with caregivers play a crucial role in their development. One strong cue to an ongoing social interaction is the mutual dependency of interaction partners' behaviours, a feature we refer to as social contingency. Socially contingent interactions have been shown to support learning, but it remains underexplored whether social contingency alone, even in the absence of other social cues, can drive developmental advantages. Addressing this question requires faithfully representing bi-directional contingency in infant-adult interactions while isolating it from other s…

Animal Connections: A Scoping Review towards Enhanced Understanding of Companion Animal Interactions in Assessment of Social Connectedness in Older Adults.

Social isolation and loneliness are concerns in gerontology. The impact of the human-animal interaction (HAI) on loneliness for older adults living alone is understudied. This scoping review explored the extent to which HAI is included in studies investigating social connectedness, specifically social isolation and loneliness, and if HAI bolsters healthy aging through increased perceived support. Following the PRISMA-ScR protocol, data from 58 articles were thematically categorized, identifying (a) existing inclusion of HAI; (b) definitions and descriptions of HAI; and (c) the relationships be

Reduced activation in empathy core regions during observation of social interactions in patients with borderline personality disorder: an fMRI-study.

Patients with Borderline personality disorder (BPD) are known to exhibit aberrant empathy and heightened sensitivity to social threat. However, the neural mechanisms underlying these observations are not fully understood. In the present study, we therefore sought to assess empathy for somatic and psychological pain during a Social Interaction Empathy Task (SIET) in female patients with BPD (n = 50) and healthy participants (n = 55) during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We further examined pain thresholds during a pain-pressure test (PPT) to the thenar muscles, self-harm behaviou…

The impact of internet use on the health status of the older adults in China: a chain mediating model of social interaction and physical exercise.

BACKGROUND: As China's population aging intensifies, older adults face growing health risks. Internet use, social interaction, and physical exercise significantly impact their health. This study aims to explore the underlying mechanisms of these variables on older adults health. METHODS: This study used data from the 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), involving 3,150 urban and rural older adults aged 60-98. The dependent variable was health status, measured by a composite score of self-assessed health, physical health, and mental health. Internet use served as the independent variable…

Assessing the Recognition of Social Interactions Through Body Motion in the Routine Care of Patients with Post-Lingual Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Background: Body motion significantly contributes to understanding communicative and social interactions, especially when auditory information is impaired. The visual skills of people with hearing loss are often enhanced and compensate for some of the missing auditory information. In the present study, we investigated the recognition of social interactions by observing body motion in people with post-lingual sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Methods: In total, 38 participants with post-lingual SNHL and 38 matched normally hearing individuals (NHIs) were presented with point-light stimuli of t…

Associations between living alone, social interactions, and physical performance differ by sex: Results from the Baltimore Hip Studies.

BACKGROUND: There is mixed evidence on whether living arrangements and social interactions are associated with poorer health outcomes after hip fracture repair. Distinct social profiles among male and female older adults may explain some of the differences. However, prior studies did not evaluate these differences by sex. This article aims to assess if the associations between living alone, social interaction, and physical performance differ by sex among hip fracture survivors. METHODS: This prospective cohort study is part of the Baltimore Hip Studies seventh cohort, with 168 male and 171 fe…

Perceived Community Support, Users' Interactions, and Value Co-Creation in Online Health Community: The Moderating Effect of Social Exclusion.

Online health communities (OHCs) face the same problem as other social media platforms in terms of decreasing activity and user attrition. Drawing upon organizational support theory, this study explores how perceived community support affects user interactions and value co-creation which in turn influence their continuous participation. OHCs act as both health knowledge-sharing platforms and important social media for patients, and thus, interpersonal interactions in OHCs are categorized into health-related and general topic interactions. Considering the identity of patients, this study also e

Effects of the beta-carboline, FG 7142, in the social interaction test of anxiety and the holeboard: correlations between behaviour and plasma concentrations.

The behavioural effects of the beta-carboline FG 7142 were investigated in the social interaction test of anxiety and the holeboard test of exploration and locomotor activity. FG 7142 (5-20 mg/kg) produced a significant decrease in the time spent in social interaction by pairs of rats, without an accompanying decrease in motor activity. This anxiogenic effect was highly correlated with the plasma concentrations of FG 7142 for the rats receiving 5 and 10 mg/kg doses, but not for those receiving the 20 mg/kg dose. In the holeboard, FG 7142 had no effect on exploratory head-dipping at the doses t…

Influence of Auditory Integrative Training on Casein Kinase 2 and Its Impact on Behavioral and Social Interaction in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Considerable disturbances in post-translational protein phosphorylation have recently been discovered in multiple neurological disorders. Casein kinase-2 (CK2) is a tetrameric Ser/Thr protein kinase that phosphorylates a large number of substrates and contributes in several cellular physiological and pathological processes. CK2 is highly expressed in the mammalian brain and catalyzes the phosphorylation of a large number of substrates that are crucial in neuronal or glial homeostasis and inflammatory signaling processes across synapses. In this study, we investigated the impact of auditory int

People with high empathy show increased cortical activity around the left medial parieto-occipital sulcus after watching social interaction of on-screen characters.

People with high empathy interpret others' mental states in daily social interactions. To investigate their characteristics of social cognitive processing, we compared neuromagnetic activities between 20 males with high empathy and 23 males with low empathy while watching social interactions between two characters. Twenty stories of four-panel comic strips were presented; the first three panels described social interactions, and the last panel described empathic/nonempathic behaviors. People with high empathy exhibited increased cortical activity in the right occipital region, medial part of t…

Testosterone suppression with or without testicular Preservation: Impact on mouse behavior, including emotional state, locomotor activity, social interaction, cognitive function, and sexual behavior.

The deposition of androgens significantly influences livestock meat quality, yet traditional surgical castration methods involving testicular removal raise concerns about animal welfare due to their association with stress and behavioral changes. To address these issues, this study compared two approaches-surgical castration (testicular removal) and immunocastration (retention of testicular tissue)-to evaluate their psychological and behavioral impacts in mice across domains such as sexual behavior, emotional regulation, locomotor activity, social interaction, and memory performance. Results d…

Role of the 5-HT2A Receptor in Self- and Other-Initiated Social Interaction in Lysergic Acid Diethylamide-Induced States: A Pharmacological fMRI Study.

Distortions of self-experience are critical symptoms of psychiatric disorders and have detrimental effects on social interactions. In light of the immense need for improved and targeted interventions for social impairments, it is important to better understand the neurochemical substrates of social interaction abilities. We therefore investigated the pharmacological and neural correlates of self- and other-initiated social interaction. In a double-blind, randomized, counterbalanced, crossover study 24 healthy human participants (18 males and 6 females) received either (1) placebo + placebo, (2…
