The Critical Role and Evaluation of Community Mobilizers in Polio Eradication in Remote Settings in Africa and Asia.

This article assesses the CORE Group Polio Project (CGPP) experience over a 20-year period in 5 countries. It examines how a program designed to provide social mobilization to eradicate one disease, and which did so effectively, functioned within the general framework of community health workers (CHWs). Vertical health programs often have limited impact on broader community health. CGPP has a 20-year history of social mobilization and effective program interventions. This history provided an opportunity to assess how CGPP community mobilizers (CMs) functioned in polio and maternal and child he

[Needs, uses, cons-pros, good practices and opportunities about walker in elderly with loss of autonomy].

Non-use of the walker may be secondary to an initial inappropriate prescribing, a lack of adequate training, a lack of monitoring and side effects of using. Improving both stability and mobility in users is due to several biomechanical mechanisms. The benefits of walker are: general physiological effects, more confidence, better social life and decrease in the burden of care. The disadvantages of walker are: technical or practical aspects criticized by users, musculoskeletal disorders, delayed reaction time, fall risk and stigma. Few scientific data evaluating the interest of the walker concer

Development of a unified system for assessing health related quality of life across the cancer care continuum: the EUonQoL Delphi study to identify priorities for quality of life domains.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer and cancer treatment have a major impact on health related quality of life (HRQoL). To improve the assessment of HRQoL in patients with cancer and evaluate the impact of policy interventions, the European Oncology Quality of Life (EUonQoL) project aims at developing a digital, patient centred system to assess HRQoL based on evaluations and preferences of cancer patients and survivors: the EUonQoL-kit. METHOD: Patients across the cancer care continuum, healthcare professionals and researchers from six European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and

Associations Between Peak Expiratory Flow and Community Mobility Loss Among Older Adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Community mobility is a vital patient-centered outcome for older adults living in the community. These deficits in mobility are linked to social isolation, increased hospitalizations, and higher mortality rates. Impaired pulmonary function may be a modifiable risk factor for mobility decline, with existing inequities in lung health potentially contributing disproportionately to mobility loss among Black older adults. MATERIALS/METHODS: A cohort of 4742 community-dwelling older adults (weighted n = 29,180,893) with self-reported ability to walk 3 or more blocks in their community w

The impact of early powered mobility training in families and children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type I.

This study examined the effects of early powered mobility training using modified ride-on toy cars in young children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type I (SMA I). A randomized, waitlist-controlled, single-blinded trial was conducted in Spain with 16 children aged 10 months to 5 years. The intervention consisted of 12 weeks of powered mobility training in natural environments, followed by 4 weeks of follow-up. Primary outcomes included participation (YC-PEM), functional ability (PEDI-CAT), and quality of life (PedsQL-NM), assessed at five time points. Parental stress (PSI-SF) was a secondary out

The association between multimorbidity and mobility disability-free life expectancy in adults aged 85 years and over: A modelling study in the Newcastle 85+ cohort.

BACKGROUND: Mobility disability is predictive of further functional decline and can itself compromise older people's capacity (and preference) to live independently. The world's population is also ageing, and multimorbidity is the norm in those aged ≥85. What is unclear in this age group, is the influence of multimorbidity on (a) transitions in mobility disability and (b) mobility disability-free life expectancy (mobDFLE). METHODS AND FINDINGS: Using multistate modelling in an inception cohort of 714 85-year-olds followed over a 10-year period (aged 85 in 2006 to 95 in 2016), we investigated

Feasibility of early mobilization after acute myocardial infarction.

The purpose of the study was to determine the proportion of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) for whom an early programme of mobilization, independent of sex and age was possible, and the main reasons for delay of mobilization. Mobilization according to the programme (sitting on day 2 and standing on day 3) succeeded for 49% of the 241 patients alive and conscious after the 1st day, and there were no significant difference with regard to age and sex. The main reasons for delayed mobilization were prolonged chest pain, conduction disturbances and pulmonary oedema. Discharge on day

The subtle suspension of backlash: A meta-analysis of penalties for women's implicit and explicit dominance behavior.

Previous research suggests that women, more than men, experience negative outcomes when they display dominance. A closer look, however, reveals ambiguity about the specific forms of dominance proscribed for women. Here, we suggest that negative reactions to women's dominance, a counter-stereotypical behavior, may require that the behavior be clearly encoded as counter-stereotypical-which is less likely when the behavior is expressed implicitly. This hypothesis was tested with a meta-analysis of studies on the evaluation of individuals behaving dominantly, including articles not directly invest

The career success of an adult with a learning disability: a psychosocial study of amnesic-semantic aphasia.

B.I. is a 39-year-old, intellectually gifted (IQ = 130) man with learning disabilities who, without known cause, demonstrated symptoms of amnesic-semantic aphasia at age 13. This led to placement in a public school class for students with mild mental retardation and to his dropping out of school after repeating Grade 9. His aphasia is associated with a severe deficit in speech comprehension, poor reading and writing, spatial confusion, and episodic memory loss. We studied the remarkable behavioral and cognitive adjustments that have enabled him to lead a fulfilling life and become a highly suc

'Back to better': amplifying health equity, and determinants of health perspectives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Equity and social justice have long been key tenets of health promotion practice, policy and research. Health promotion foregrounds the pertinence of social, economic, cultural, political and spiritual life in creating and maintaining health. This necessitates a critical structural determinants of health perspective that actively engages with the experiences of health and wellbeing among diverse peoples. The inequitable impacts of pandemics are well documented, as are calls for improved pandemic responses. Yet, current pandemic and emergency preparedness plans do not adequately a

Life-Space and Cognitive Decline in Older Adults in Different Social and Economic Contexts: Longitudinal Results from the IMIAS Study.

Psychosocial, socioeconomic and sociocultural aspects can influence cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults. Life-space restriction is potentially related to cognitive status. We examined the longitudinal association between life-space mobility and changes in cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults in different social settings of North and South America and Europe. We used data from 1486 participants of the International Mobility in Aging Study (IMIAS) conducted at five sites: Tirana (Albania), Natal (Brazil), Manizales (Colombia), Kingston and Saint-Hyacinthe (C

[Mobility and balance].

Quality of life is strongly associated with the mobility of elderly people. Falls often cause restricted mobility, a decline in activities of daily living and an increased risk of institutionalisation. Frailty, commonly associated with aging, is a biologic syndrome of decreased resistance to stressors, resulting from declines across multiple physiological systems. Changes in mobility and gait constitute part of the frailty syndrome. Since more than one third of persons over the age of 65 fall each year, prevention of falls is very important. Already while taking the patients' history special e

Understanding adaptive capacity and capacity to innovate in social-ecological systems: Applying a gender lens.

Development policy increasingly focuses on building capacities to respond to change (adaptation), and to drive change (innovation). Few studies, however, focus specifically on the social and gender differentiation of capacities to adapt and innovate. We address this gap using a qualitative study in three communities in Solomon Islands; a developing country, where rural livelihoods and well-being are tightly tied to agriculture and fisheries. We find the five dimensions of capacity to adapt and to innovate (i.e. assets, flexibility, learning, social organisation, agency) to be mutually dependan
