Social support, quality of life, immune function, and health in persons living with HIV.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social support and quality of life in individuals with HIV. Aggressive boys' hostile perceptual and response biases: the role of attention and impulsivity.

The present study addressed whether (1) aggressive boys show hostile biases or general deficits in social perception, (2) aggressive boys' social perceptual difficulties also characterize isolate and isolate-aggressive children, (3) aggressive, isolate, and isolate-aggressive boys' social perceptual difficulties are attributable to inattention and impulsivity, and (4) aggressive and nonaggressive boys differ in the links between social perception and proposed behavioral responses. Aggressive boys demonstrated hostile biases, but not general deficits, in intention-cue detection relative to aver

Social support and self-efficacy in patients with Myasthenia Gravis: a common pathway towards positive health outcomes.

Social support and self-efficacy, that was defined as one's belief in one's capabilities to enact a certain behaviour, have a mediating effect on health outcomes and, by facilitating healthy behaviours and compliance to treatment, reduce morbidity and mortality. This pilot study aims to test whether social support and self-efficacy have a positive effect in improving health outcomes of patients with Myasthenia Gravis. 74 patients (mean age 48.1; 67.6% female) were enrolled and reported low self-efficacy and health status, but good perceived social support. Men reported better self-efficacy tha

Social capital I: measurement and associations with economic mobility.

Social capital-the strength of an individual's social network and community-has been identified as a potential determinant of outcomes ranging from education to health1-8. However, efforts to understand what types of social capital matter for these outcomes have been hindered by a lack of social network data. Here, in the first of a pair of papers9, we use data on 21 billion friendships from Facebook to study social capital. We measure and analyse three types of social capital by ZIP (postal) code in the United States: (1) connectedness between different types of people, such as those with low

Determinants of mammography screening participation-a cross-sectional analysis of the German population-based Gutenberg Health Study (GHS).

PURPOSE: We investigated the association between social inequality and participation in a mammography screening program (MSP). Since the German government offers mammography screening free of charge, any effect of social inequality on participation should be due to educational status and not due to the financial burden. METHODS: The 'Gutenberg Health Study' is a cohort study in the Rhine-Main-region, Germany. A health check-up was performed, and questions about medical history, health behavior, including secondary prevention such as use of mammography, and social status are included. Two indi…

Sexual Identity Development and Social Ecological Facilitators and Barriers of PrEP Uptake and Adherence Among Latinx Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Latinx gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (LMSM) report lower pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use than their white, non-Latinx counterparts. We hypothesize that this disparity is partially attributable to social ecological factors that can be addressed via prevention interventions. In this retrospective study, we first examined data from 253 LMSM to determine whether theorized associations existed between acquisition of a PrEP prescription (uptake) in relation to several social ecological factors based on a conceptual framework of determinants of access to and uptake of PrEP fo

Men who have sex with men were more depressed than their counterparts because of lower social support and higher loneliness: A comparative survey among Chinese university students.

BACKGROUND: Poor mental health is prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM), including MSM university students (MSMUS), causing a significant burden on their health and society. The study aimed to compare the difference in levels of depressive symptoms between Chinese MSMUS and non-MSMUS and test the mediating roles of social support and loneliness in the relationship between MSM status and depressive symptoms among male university students. METHODS: From June to October 2018, a total of 305 MSMUS and 2447 non-MSMUS from two cities in Sichuan province (China) were investigated using que

Associations Between Social Media Use and Anxiety and Depression Among Older Adults : Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media engagement among older adults has surged worldwide, with China's older users exceeding 120 million in 2023. However, research remains disproportionately focused on youth. Critically, the dose-response relationship between use intensity and mental health in this population is poorly quantified, especially in rapidly aging societies such as China, where 23% of the population will be aged ≥65 years by 2035. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to outline the social media use status among retired older adults and explore the association between social media use, including time spe

Potential profiling of social alienation in older female patients with stress urinary incontinence.

BACKGROUND: With the global trend of aging, stress urinary incontinence is becoming more common in older adults, which may have some impact on patients' quality of life. Social alienation can generate negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, and morbid stigma, and reduce patients' quality of life. However, the current status of social alienation is different among different older adult female patients with stress urinary incontinence. Therefore, this study categorizes older adult female stress urinary incontinence patients through potential analysis to understand the category

Evaluation of Social Phobia among Syrian Refugees' Youth in Jordan.

Social phobia is one of the most common anxiety disorders in youth yet still under-recognized and undertreated. BACKGROUND: The exploration of discrimination, social acceptance, and their impact on the psychological well-being of older men who have sex with men (MSM) is a critical area of study within the broader field of LGBTQ+ research. This demographic, comprising individuals who identify as both male and homosexual and are aged in the older spectrum of the population, faces unique challenges that intersect age, sexual orientation, and societal attitudes. Objectives This study aimed to explore the relationship between social acceptance and isolation with discrimination and the impact on the psycholog
