Symptoms of hormonal therapy and social support: Is there a connection? Comparison of symptom severity, symptom interference and social support among breast cancer patients receiving and not receiving adjuvant hormonal treatment.

BACKGROUND: Although there has been a significant reduction in mortality, breast cancer is the most frequent cancer among women worldwide. This decline in mortality has created a significant survivor population that must manage the post curative treatment phase, in order to have an increased quality of life and well-being. This study examined the relationship between symptom interference and severity with the perception of social support in the lives of women receiving or not receiving, hormonal therapy after initial treatment. METHODS AND SAMPLE: Participants completed symptom severity and i…

The role of social networks in supporting self-management in CKD: a narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing global health concern requiring effective self-management to mitigate progression and improve quality of life. While self-management is increasingly recognised as a socially embedded practice, the specific contributions of social network members to this process in CKD are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise and interpret existing literature on how social networks support individuals living with early-stage CKD and identify gaps in understanding. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review. Fourteen studies involving 560 participant

The influence of social environment and facility support on smoking in adolescent males in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: The high number of smokers in Indonesia, including adolescents, causes high morbidity due to smoking. Reducing the incidence of smoking-related disease in Indonesia needs to be done by reducing the number of smokers. This can be done by preventing smoking as early as possible, including during adolescence. The study aimed to assess the prevalence of adolescent male smokers and determine the social environment and facility support that influences smoking behavior in adolescent males aged 15-18 years in Surabaya, Indonesia. DESIGN AND METHOD: A cross-sectional study was performed fr

Preliminary study of the role of social support in cycles of intimate partner violence.

Background: Parents' experiences of IPV are associated with an increased risk for their children to experience IPV. However, the factors that may contribute to intergenerational IPV, particularly between adult mothers and daughters, are still poorly understood. To fill this gap in the literature, this preliminary study examines the moderating role of social support in IPV cycles among Cameroonian mother-daughter dyads.Method: Sixty-one mother-daughter dyads completed questionnaires individually. We performed moderation analysis to examine if the association between mothers' experiences of IPV …

Determinants of Hip and Knee Replacement: The Role of Social Support and Family Dynamics.

The objective of this study was to examine variations in the determinants of joint replacement (JR) across gender and age, with emphasis on the role of social support and family dynamics. We analyzed data from the US Health and Retirement Study (1998-2010) on individuals aged 45 or older with no prior receipt of JR. We used logistic regression to analyze the probability of receiving knee or hip replacement by gender and age (<65, 65+). We estimated the effect of demographic, health needs, economic, and familial support variables on the rate of JR. We found that being married/partnered with a h…

Heterogeneity in the Strength of the Relation Between Social Support and Post-Trauma Psychopathology.

Potentially traumatic events (PTEs) increase risk for psychopathology, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Social support (SS) is associated with reduced symptoms for each disorder. Each disorder, however, is highly heterogeneous such that they are comprised of clusters of different symptoms. It is unclear if SS is associated with all clusters equally. The current study examined the relation between SS and the symptom clusters of each disorder. Participants completed a battery of self-report assessments for PT…

The structure of social exchange in self-help support groups: development of a measure.

Self-help support groups are indigenous community resources designed to help people manage a variety of personal challenges, from alcohol abuse to xeroderma pigmentosum. The social exchanges that occur during group meetings are central to understanding how people benefit from participation. This paper examines the different types of social exchange behaviors that occur during meetings, using two studies to develop empirically distinct scales that reliably measure theoretically important types of exchange. Resource theory informed the initial measurement development efforts. Exploratory factor

Therapist adherence to interpersonal vs. supportive therapy for social anxiety disorder.

We assessed therapist adherence to interpersonal therapy (IPT) and supportive therapy (ST) in a controlled trial for social anxiety disorder. Raters blindly scored n = 133 videotapes from 53 participants using the Collaborative Study Psychotherapy Rating Scale (CSPRS). Results reveal statistical differences across groups, but higher than expected overlap. Greater use of IPT in beginning sessions predicted better outcome in both therapies. Suboptimal adherence may be due to the crossed design in which the same therapists delivered both IPT and ST. Since switching between different approaches is

The relationship of social support to treatment entry and engagement: the Community Assessment Inventory.

This study was conducted to determine the psychometric properties of a measure of social support, the Community Assessment Inventory (CAI), and to examine the role of social support in recovery. The CAI and the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) were administered to 196 opioid-dependent adults in (n = 135) or out of (n = 61) methadone treatment in Baltimore, Maryland, between 2004 and 2006. Baseline CAI scale scores indicated a generally high level of internal consistency (alpha scores). Pearson correlations showed that the scales were stable and had good discriminant validity with the ASI composi…

Scaffolding the social mind: emotion recognition supports mentalizing but reinforces bias.

Mentalizing-inferring others' mental states-is a core social function supported by both perceptual and contextual processes. Emotion recognition similarly unfolds in two stages: early perceptual decoding of facial features followed by context-sensitive interpretation. Here, we tested whether emotion recognition scaffolds mentalizing across these stages and whether they attenuate or amplify social bias. Participants (N = 34) completed a face categorization task during EEG recording, in which mentalizing was operationalized as differential neural responses to mindful (human) versus mindless (dol

The Impact of Social Support on Health Outcomes of Diabetic Patients: A Systematic Review.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common chronic disease worldwide. The prevalence of T2DM has consistently increased over the past few decades. Factors affecting patient management of diabetes are important in preventing diabetic complications. Social support has been cited as one of the most important aspects of managing chronic conditions. This systematic review aims to consolidate the existing literature discussing the impact of social support on managing type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and T2DM. To begin our review, the Ovid MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Onl…
