Attentional bias to threat in social phobia: facilitated processing of threat or difficulty disengaging attention from threat?

There is a growing body of research pointing to the possibility that anxious individuals may have difficulty disengaging their attention from threat-relevant information when this information is task irrelevant (e.g., Amir, N., & Elias, J. (2002). Allocation of attention to threat in social phobia: difficulty in disengaging from task irrelevant cues, Manuscript under review; The Quarterly J. Expo. Psycho. 54A (2001) 665). In the current paper, we report a direct test of this hypothesis in individuals with social phobia. Participants performed a variation of the Posner paradigm (Quart. J. Exp.

Cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric evaluation of the child oral health impact profile-short form 19 (COHIP-SF 19) for Ethiopian schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: Poor oral health can cause pain, discomfort, and reduced oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) affecting children's social interactions, self-esteem, and school participation. Understanding OHRQoL and its impact is essential for designing effective oral health strategies. The Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP-SF19) assesses OHRQoL in children but lacks validation in diverse cultural contexts, including Ethiopia. This study aimed to adapt the COHIP-SF 19 to Amharic and evaluate its psychometric properties among schoolchildren in the Amhara region. METHODS: The original

Psychometric Properties of the Turkish Version of the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP-TR).

INTRODUCTION: Given the critical significance of cognitive functions in daily life and social interactions, the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP) scale is particularly important in clinical practice. It can be administered quickly and offers alternative forms, avoiding issues with lengthy administration or a lack of parallel forms. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the SCIP scale (SCIP-TR), which enables rapid and practical assessment of cognitive impairment in psychiatric settings. METHODS: This study involved 137 healthy students an

Qualitative Research to Understand the Patient Experience and Evaluate Content Validity of the Chronic Ocular Pain Questionnaire (COP-Q).

INTRODUCTION: Chronic ocular surface pain (COSP) is described as a persistent, moderate-to-severe pain at the ocular surface lasting more than 3 months. Symptoms of COSP have a significant impact on patients' vision-dependent activities of daily living (ADL) and distal health-related quality of life (HRQoL). To adequately capture patient perspectives in clinical trials, patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures must demonstrate sufficient evidence of content validity in the target population. This study aimed to explore the patient experience of living with COSP and evaluate content validity of

Development and validation of the nasopharyngeal cancer scale among the system of quality of life instruments for cancer patients (QLICP-NA V2.0): combined classical test theory and generalizability theory.

OBJECTIVES: This research was designed to develop a nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) scale based on quality of life (QOL) instruments for cancer patients (QLICP-NA). This scale was developed by using a modular approach and was evaluated by classical test and generalizability theories. METHODS: Programmed decision procedures and theories on instrument development were applied to create QLICP-NA V2.0. A total of 121 NPC inpatients were assessed using QLICP-NA V2.0 to measure their QOL data from hospital admission until discharge. Scale validity, reliability, and responsiveness were evaluated by corr

Psychologists and children of alcoholic parents.

Clinical evidence has pictured children of alcoholic parents as vulnerable physically, emotionally, socially, academically, and at risk for alcoholism. Review of research indicated that some of these clinical insights have been validated, but much more is needed to fill out an accurate picture for psychologists who will be asked to work with them.

Valid when valued: A community-engaged framework and toolkit to improve identification of autistic people's motor difficulties in research and practice.

Many autistic people experience clinically-significant motor differences that pose lifelong physical health risks including physical inactivity, cardiometabolic disease, falls and injuries, and chronic pain. These differences amplify existing cognitive and social-emotional features of autism and limit daily living skills, which in turn negatively impacts mental health and participation. Yet, professionals often overlook or mischaracterize autistic people's motor difficulties, in part because non-motor factors can affect assessment outcomes. Most standardized motor assessments presume typical c

Unmasking the anti-gender mindset: development and validation of the Gender Ideology Belief Scale.

INTRODUCTION: Opposition to gender ideology has become a socially and politically salient phenomenon, yet there is still a lack of validated instruments capable of capturing its multidimensional structure in a systematic way. The present research aimed to develop the Gender Ideology Belief Scale (GIBS), a new measure designed to assess negative attitudes toward gender ideology as a coherent ideological construct. METHODS: Across two studies involving Italian participants (total N = 595), the GIBS was developed through a multi-phase process including literature review, analysis of public anti-

Behavioral synchronization of two individuals during cooperative interaction: the role of the mentalization ability as measured by the reading the mind in the eyes test.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonally synchronized behaviors play a fundamental role in social interactions. An important prereqvisite for behavioral synchronization is the mentalization ability of the individuals involved in the interaction. While the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) is widely applied to measure mentalization, most studies of RMET used single-subject designs, which lack ecological validity and have limited generalizability for real, on-going, reciprocal social interactions. Using a two-subject design, our objectives were to examine (i) the predictive validity of RMET for the sy

The dental anxiety scale (DAS) - psychometric properties and longitudinal findings among middle-aged adults.

BACKGROUND: The Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) is a well-established instrument for assessing dental anxiety. While numerous cross-sectional studies have examined the DAS, longitudinal research investigating age-related changes, reliability, validity over time, associations with mental and physical health, and demographic determinants remains limited. Furthermore, the possibility of longitudinal changes in its factor structure has received limited attention. METHODS: In 2013/2014, N = 329 German adults (53.6% female, mean age 40.20 years) and in 2019/2020, N = 323 adults (55.7% female, mean age 4

Anxiety-like behavior in Rett syndrome: characteristics and assessment by anxiety scales.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome (RTT) is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by regression of language and motor skills, cognitive impairment, and frequent seizures. Although the diagnostic criteria focus on communication, motor impairments, and hand stereotypies, behavioral abnormalities are a prevalent and disabling component of the RTT phenotype. Among these problematic behaviors, anxiety is a prominent symptom. While the introduction of the Rett Syndrome Behavioral Questionnaire (RSBQ) represented a major advancement in the field, no systematic characterization of anxious behavior

Sequential application of major habit-reversal components to treat motor tics in children.

In this study, we sequentially administered up to four components of the habit-reversal treatment to 4 children with motor tics within a multiple baseline design. The habit-reversal components included (a) awareness training; (b) awareness training and self-monitoring; (c) awareness training, self-monitoring, and social support; and (d) awareness training, social support, and the use of a competing response. Results demonstrated that the combined use of awareness training, social support, and competing response training was effective in eliminating motor tics in 2 of 4 children, that awareness

Validation and psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Quality-of-Life Scale (QOLS) with a sample of general and special education teachers.

This study was performed to validate the Arabic version of the 15-item Quality-of-Life Scale (QOLS) using a sample of 401 teachers, including 235 general education teachers and 166 special education teachers. The psychometric properties of the QOLS were evaluated through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). EFA supported a two factor solution, explaining 55.6% of the total variance, with Factor 1 reflecting personal and social well-being and Factor 2 reflecting leisure and autonomy. Internal consistency was excellent, with Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's om

Subjective dimensions of patient competence: relationships with selected healthcare usage behaviors and general features of self-rated competence.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce the concept of patient competence and provide additional information on the concurrent validity of a new self-rating measure of patient competence in the context of cancer employing healthcare usage behaviors and more general self-rated features of patient competence as criteria. METHODS: Based on a multi-center sample of n=536 patients with cancer, bivariate correlations and multiple regressions were computed. RESULTS: The competence subscale of striving for autonomous decisions emerged as significant, albeit weak predictor of having used professional psycho-social s

Psychometric evaluation of two new parent-rating scales for measuring anxiety symptoms in young Dutch children.

The current study examined the reliability and validity of the Preschool Anxiety Scale (PAS) and the Children's Moods Fears and Worries Questionnaire (CMFWQ) in a Dutch community sample of 275 preschool children aged 2-6 years. The acceptability of PAS and CMFWQ items was good. Preliminary exploratory factor analyses yielded a meaningful five-factor model for the PAS and a three-factor model for the CMFWQ. PAS scales had moderate to high reliability coefficients (alphas between .59 and .86), whereas CMFWQ scales displayed good internal consistency (alphas between .88 and .95). The validity of

Excessive avoidance bias towards uncertain faces in non-clinical social anxiety individuals.

Previous survey studies have consistently shown a strong link between social anxiety and intolerance for uncertainty. However, this association lacks empirical validation from laboratory investigations. To bridge this gap, we conducted a study utilizing the ultimatum game task to assign distinct social connotations (egoistic, altruistic, and uncertain) to three initially neutral faces. Subsequently, we utilized the Approach-Avoidance Task (AAT) paradigm to evaluate participants' approach-avoidance tendencies towards the faces with varying social meanings. Additionally, we collected data on par

Longitudinal associations of psychosocial factors and fear of falling in older adults: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Fear of falling (FOF) is a phenomenon prevalent among older adults associated with adverse outcomes, including reduced mental and physical health, decreased quality of life, and an overall reduction in social participation. Based on cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, recent reviews have provided information on the prevalence of FOF and its association with different health outcomes. To gain a deeper understanding of factors relevant to interventions to prevent or reduce FOF, this review goes beyond previous evidence syntheses by focusing on psychosocial factors that are long
