Percutaneous angiography of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in dogs: techniques, results and implications for intravascular occlusion.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the percutaneous angiography and the morphology of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in dogs. BACKGROUND: In contrast to surgical ligation the knowledge of angiographic morphology is necessary for intravascular PDA occlusion. METHODS: Forty-nine dogs with a left to right shunting PDA were included in a three-year, prospective study. In 43 dogs with a body weight >/= 3.0 kg a percutaneous approach to brachial artery was tested. In six miniature dogs (< 3.0 kg) placement of angiographic catheter from femoral vein antegrade through the PDA was studied. Angiographic morpholo

Atrioventricular Canal Defect (incomplete form of endocardial cushion defect) and Ostium Secundum Type Interatrial Septal defect in a dog.

A four-year-old German shepherd mixed-breed dog was presented with an asymptomatic heart murmur. An atrial septal defect associated with tricuspid and mitral dysplasia (atrioventricular canal defect) was diagnosed. The pulmonary to systemic blood flow ratio was in the range of 2.5:1 (Qp:Qs ratio). Echocardiography and flow pattern across the valves as well as the direction of the shunt allows a better description of the physiopathological consequences of this rare congenital heart disease. Additionally, an Ostium Secundum Type interatrial septum defect was found at necropsy.

Heart rate variability in young, clinically healthy Dachshunds: influence of sex, mitral valve prolapse status, sampling period and time of day.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigatest the influence of sampling period duration, time of day, age, sex, body weight and degree of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) on various measures of heart rate variability (HRV) in the dog. The correlations between the HRV parameters were also investigated. BACKGROUND: Holter recording is increasingly being used in dogs but method studies are sparse. Previous studies suggest that canine MVP is related to a high vagal tone. METHODS: Twenty-four hour ambulatory electrocardiographic recording (Holter recording) was performed on 24 Dachshunds (11 males and 13 female

Echocardiographic assessment of mitral regurgitation severity in dogs.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most important cardiovascular problem affecting dogs. Transthoracic echocardiography is the most practical imaging modality to characterize the fundamental features of MR, including an assessment of MR severity. The diversity of MR severity in subclinical dogs and advancements in treatments directed at the cause of MR have (re)ignited interest in more comprehensive and quantitative methods of assessing MR severity. This review focuses on evaluating the severity of chronic MR in dogs. It discusses when a comprehensive assessment of MR severity is indicated. It h

The use of contrast-enhanced echocardiography in the evaluation of feline left ventricular wall thickness.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Accurate measurement of feline left ventricular wall thickness (LVWT) is challenging due to endocardial and myocardial irregularities, false tendons, and prominent papillary muscles. In human medicine, contrast-enhanced echocardiography (C-Echo) is used to improve left ventricular wall delineation and is more accurate, repeatable, and reliable than standard echocardiography (S-Echo). Our objective was to compare C-Echo and S-Echo measurements of feline LVWT and determine repeatability, reproducibility, and reliability of each modality. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Multimodal imaging of a coronary artery fistula in a Welsh Springer spaniel.

A four-year-old intact male Welsh Springer spaniel was presented for a prebreeding evaluation. Thoracic auscultation revealed a grade 2/6 left basilar systolic murmur. Echocardiography demonstrated left atrial and left ventricular dilation with systolic dysfunction, including a left atrium-to-aortic root ratio of 2.24, normalized left ventricular internal dimension in diastole of 2.44, and fractional shortening of 19%. Color and spectral Doppler interrogation identified continuous flow with a peak velocity of approximately 1.5 m/s in the left pulmonary artery. Transesophageal echocardiography,

Effect of mitral valve repair on outcomes in dogs with preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease: a retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Mitral valve repair (MVR) for myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs has favorable results, but its effectiveness compared with medical treatment in preclinical (stage B2) dogs remains unclear. This study investigated whether MVR improves survival in preclinical dogs with MMVD. ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS: Dogs diagnosed with stage B2 MMVD between October 2016 and September 2020 were divided into an MVR group and a control group receiving medical treatment. The primary outcome was a composite of all-cause mortality and the first onset of pulmonary edema. T

Auscultatory findings and left atrial function as indicators of mitral valve regurgitation severity in horses.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Mitral valve regurgitation (MR) is frequently detected in horses, but its classification and prognostication remain challenging. This study investigated whether auscultatory findings and left atrial function are associated with MR severity. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty controls (no/trivial MR) and 101 MR horses (58 mild, 36 moderate, seven severe) were retrospectively evaluated. All were in sinus rhythm and underwent auscultation and echocardiography. Mitral regurgitation severity was graded using a scoring system. Systolic murmur characteristics (duration, t

Successful treatment of feline infectious peritonitis with pericardiectomy and GS-441524.

A five-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair cat was referred for respiratory distress and pleural effusion. Echocardiography identified a moderate to severe volume of echogenic pericardial effusion (PCE), pericardial thickening, and a mild volume of anechoic pleural effusion. Computed tomography with intravenous contrast confirmed a large volume of PCE with concurrent pericardial thickening; a pericardiectomy was subsequently performed. Cytological analysis of the PCE was consistent with predominantly neutrophilic inflammation. Histopathology of the pericardium showed severe, pyogranulom

Clinical utility of shear wave speed and dispersion slope measured by shear wave elastography for the assessment of hepatic congestion in dogs with cardiac disease.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Right-sided heart failure (RHF) elevates central venous pressure, causing hepatic congestion. Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) measures shear wave speed (SWS) and dispersion slope (DS), reflecting tissue viscoelasticity and viscosity. The aim was to investigate associations between hepatic SWS and DS and RHF in dogs and evaluate clinical utility. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred client-owned dogs with cardiac disease were prospectively classified into RHF (n = 27) and non-RHF (n = 73) groups based on ascites. Hepatic SWS and DS were measured

The utility of continuous high-enhanced-contrast electrocardiography-gated cardiac computed tomography method evaluating accurate minimal ductal diameter and ductus arteriosus morphology in a dog with patent ductus arteriosus.

A three-year-old, 4.1-kg, female Shih tzu was referred for investigation of exercise intolerance and heart murmurs. At the first visit, the dog was diagnosed with patent ductus arteriosus and a suspected persistent left cranial vena cava using echocardiography. Electrocardiography (ECG)-gated non-helical, stationary 320-slice multidetector cardiac computed tomography (CCT) was performed to classify the morphology and to measure the minimal ductal diameter. However, the ductal ostium at the pulmonary artery was not clearly visualized. To overcome this problem, we developed the continuous high-e

Predominant mitral valve morphology in dogs at different stages of myxomatous mitral valve disease: toward a standardized nomenclature.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common heart disease in dogs. Echocardiographic markers of cardiac remodeling are used to assess disease severity, but morphological features of the mitral valve are not systematically considered. Conversely, standardized morphological classification schemes are established in human cardiology and are integral to prognosis and therapeutic planning. Our objective was to adapt and apply a mitral valve morphological classification scheme to canine MMVD across various stages. ANIMALS, MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 1108

Transvalvular pulmonary stent angioplasty for palliation of severe pulmonic stenosis in two cats.

Transvalvular pulmonic stent angioplasty has been described in dogs with severe pulmonic stenosis, when balloon valvuloplasty is not indicated or possible. We report two cats that underwent stent placement across the stenotic pulmonary valve for similar indications. Both cases had good short- to medium-term outcomes. One cat experienced immediate postoperative complications in the form of pulmonary edema, while the other cat had no observed complications. Pulmonic stent angioplasty has not been previously reported in cats. This report demonstrates a possible alternative intervention in cats wi

Incidentally diagnosed non-dissecting thoracic aortic aneurysm in a dog with suspected aortic valve abnormality.

A thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) is a relatively common cardiovascular disorder in humans. However, it is rarely reported in dogs. To date, several reported canine cases are associated with clinical signs and severe complications, such as aortic dissection and rupture. Herein, we report an incidentally diagnosed TAA in an asymptomatic elderly dog with suspected aortic valve abnormality. A 12-year-old spayed female Shiba Inu was referred for the evaluation of anorexia and vomiting. It was subsequently diagnosed with gallbladder mucocele. Thoracic radiography revealed cranial mediastinal widenin

Evidence-based medical therapy for mitral regurgitation in dogs.

Myxomatous mitral valve disease is the most common acquired cardiac disease and a leading cause of congestive heart failure in dogs. Over the past three decades, experimental studies and clinical trials have established an expanding evidence base supporting pharmacologic interventions, particularly drugs that modulate hemodynamics or target the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. At the same time, gaps remain in our knowledge, and several areas of clinical practice are guided more by expert consensus or extrapolation from human cardiology than by robust veterinary data. This review summarize
