BACKGROUND: Since its introduction in 1965 salivary gland scintigraphy has been an established method to simultaneously investigate excretion function in major salivary glands. In order to elucidate parenchymal function of salivary glands, several authors described various quantitative and semiquantitative methods. However, no standardized protocol for quantitative salivary gland scintigraphy has been established so far.

X-ray and other methods were used to examine 21 patients with brain abscesses of rhinosinusogenic origin. The diagnostic methods including computer tomography, brain gamma-topography and cerebral angiography yielded objective information about the localization, size, distribution and multiplicity of brain abscesses. They were displayed as doughnuts or rings on computer tomograms and as pies on gamma-topograms. The noninvasive methods such as computer tomography or gamma-topography proved very helpful for assessing the efficacy of surgical intervention at an early postoperative stage.

Double tracer scanning of the neck after injection of thallium-210 and technetium pertechnetate was performed upon 33 patients with biochemically proved hyperparathyroidism operated upon during the past 14 months. A 43-year-old woman with papillary thyroid cancer prepared for I ablation after total thyroidectomy. With a history of type 2 diabetes for 10 years, she recently presented with periodontitis, candidiasis, and mouth dryness. TcO4 scintigraphy was ordered to evaluate function of the salivary glands. The scintigraphy incidentally found a focal TcO4 uptake in the left supraclavicular region. The subsequent neck ultrasonography showed a hypoechoic soft tissue mass with heterogeneous hypervascularity, suggestive of hemangioma.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is characterized by inflammation within the alveolar walls and interstitium of the lungs. This causes increased alveolar-capillary membrane permeability. The diagnosis is made by clinical features, chest roentgenography, lung function tests, and high-resolution CT, and it is confirmed by lung biopsy. Radionuclide aerosol tracers such as Tc-99m DTPA show increased lung clearance in ILD. Twenty-three consecutive patients with clinical and biochemical suspicion of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) were evaluated by ultrasonic scanning of the thyroid.
