Reduced empathic responses for sexually objectified women: An fMRI investigation.

Sexual objectification is a widespread phenomenon characterized by a focus on the individual's physical appearance over his/her mental state … a and cingulate cortex), the somatosensory components of pain (i.e., posterior insula and secondary somatosensory cortex) together with the mentalizing network (i.e., middle frontal cortex) to a greater extent than for the sexually objectified women. This diminished empathy is discussed in light of the gender-based violence that is afflicting the modern society.

Insula and somatosensory cortical myelination and iron markers underlie individual differences in empathy.

Empathy is a key component of our ability to engage and interact with others. In recent years, the neural mechanisms underlying affective an … of the insular cortex, while affective empathy was predicted by a marker of iron content in second somatosensory cortex. These results indicate potential novel biomarkers of trait empathy, suggesting that microstructural features of an empathy and body-related network are crucial for understanding the mental and emotional states of others.

Abnormal plasticity of the sensorimotor cortex to slow repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in patients with writer's cramp.

Previous studies demonstrated functional abnormalities in the somatosensory system, including a distorted functional organization of the somatosensory cortex (S1) in patients with writer's cramp. We tested the hypothesis that these functional alterations render S1 of these patients more susceptible to the "inhibitory" effects of subthreshold 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) given to S1. Seven patients with writer's cramp and eight healthy subjects were studied. Patients also received rTMS to the motor cortex hand area (M1). As an outcome measure, short-latency afferent …

Asymmetric changes in somatosensory evoked potentials correlate with limb apraxia in corticobasal degeneration.

To clarify the underlying mechanism of limb apraxia in corticobasal degeneration (CBD), we investigated somatosensory evoked potentials in 5 patients with CBD, as compared with 12 age-matched control subjects. All patients presented with asymmetric limb apraxia, particularly of limb-kinetic type. N20 latencies were significantly prolonged following median nerve stimulation on the more apraxic side, but not on the less apraxic side. These results suggest that limb apraxia in CBD may, at least in part, be due to a disorder of somatosensory information processing involving the parietal cortex.

Neural networks for Braille reading by the blind.

To explore the neural networks used for Braille reading, we measured regional cerebral blood flow with PET during tactile tasks performed both by Braille readers blinded early in life and by sighted subjects. Eight proficient Braille readers were studied during Braille reading with both right and left index fingers. Eight-character, non-contracted Braille-letter strings were used, and subjects were asked to discriminate between words and non-words. To compare the behaviour of the brain of the blind and the sighted directly, non-Braille tactile tasks were performed by six different blind subjec

Early hearing-impairment results in crossmodal reorganization of ferret core auditory cortex.

Numerous investigations of cortical crossmodal plasticity, most often in congenital or early-deaf subjects, have indicated that secondary auditory cortical areas reorganize to exhibit visual responsiveness while the core auditory regions are largely spared. However, a recent study of adult-deafened ferrets demonstrated that core auditory cortex was reorganized by the somatosensory modality. Because adult animals have matured beyond their critical period of sensory development and plasticity, it was not known if adult-deafening and early-deafening would generate the same crossmodal results. The

Early blindness results in abnormal corticocortical and thalamocortical connections.

Studies in congenitally blind and bilaterally enucleated individuals show that an early loss of sensory driven activity can lead to massive functional reorganization. However, the anatomical substrate for this functional reorganization is unknown. In the present study, we examined patterns of corticocortical and thalamocortical connections in adult opossums that had been bilaterally enucleated neonatally, prior to the formation of retinogeniculate and geniculocortical connections. We show that in addition to normal thalamocortical projection patterns from visual nuclei, enucleated animals also

Tinnitus and neuropathic pain share a common neural substrate in the form of specific brain connectivity and microstate profiles.

Tinnitus and neuropathic pain share similar pathophysiological, clinical, and treatment characteristics. In this EEG study, a group of tinnitus (n = 100) and neuropathic pain (n = 100) patients are compared to each other and to a healthy control group (n = 100). Spectral analysis demonstrates gamma band activity within the primary auditory and somatosensory cortices in patients with tinnitus and neuropathic pain, respectively. A conjunction analysis further demonstrates an overlap of tinnitus and pain related activity in the anterior and posterior cingulate cortex as well as in the dorsolatera

Delayed maturation of neuronal architecture and synaptogenesis in cerebral cortex of Mecp2-deficient mice.

We detected morphologic abnormalities in the cerebral cortex of Mecp2-hemizygous (Mecp2(-/y)) mice. The cortical thickness of both somatosensory and motor cortices in mutants did not increase after 4 weeks of age, as compared with that in wild-type male mice. The density of neurons in those areas was significantly higher in layers II/III and V of Mecp2(-/y) mice than in wild-type mice, particularly in layers II/ III after 4 weeks of age. In layer II/III of the somatosensory cortex of Mecp2(-/y) mice, the diameter of the apical dendrite was thin and the number of dendritic spines was small. Ele…

Vestibular-Somatosensory Interactions: A Mechanism in Search of a Function?

No unimodal vestibular cortex has been identified in the human brain. Rather, vestibular inputs are strongly integrated with signals from other sensory modalities, such as vision, touch and proprioception. This convergence could reflect an important mechanism for maintaining a perception of the body, including individual body parts, relative to the rest of the environment. Neuroimaging, electrophysiological and psychophysical studies showed evidence for multisensory interactions between vestibular and somatosensory signals. However, no convincing overall theoretical framework has been proposed

Sensory processing in Parkinson's and Huntington's disease: investigations with 3D H(2)(15)O-PET.

There is conjoining experimental and clinical evidence supporting a fundamental role of the basal ganglia as a sensory analyser engaged in central somatosensory control. This study was aimed at investigating the functional anatomy of sensory processing in two clinical conditions characterized by basal ganglia dysfunction, i.e. Parkinson's and Huntington's disease. Based on previously recorded data of somatosensory evoked potentials, we expected deficient sensory-evoked activation in cortical areas that receive modulatory somatosensory input via the basal ganglia. Eight Parkinson's disease pati

Cerebrocortical activation following unilateral labyrinthectomy in mice characterized by whole-brain clearing: implications for sensory reweighting.

Posture and gait are maintained by sensory inputs from the vestibular, visual, and somatosensory systems and motor outputs. Upon vestibular damage, the visual and/or somatosensory systems functionally substitute by cortical mechanisms called "sensory reweighting". We investigated the cerebrocortical mechanisms underlying sensory reweighting after unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL) in mice. Arc-dVenus transgenic mice, in which the gene encoding the fluorescent protein dVenus is transcribed under the control of the promoter of the immediate early gene Arc, were used in combination with whole-brain

Reversible deactivation of higher-order posterior parietal areas. II. Alterations in response properties of neurons in areas 1 and 2.

The role that posterior parietal (PPC) and motor cortices play in modulating neural responses in somatosensory areas 1 and 2 was examined with reversible deactivation by transient cooling. Multiunit recordings from neurons in areas 1 and 2 were collected from six anesthetized adult monkeys (Macaca mulatta) before, during, and after reversible deactivation of areas 5L or 7b or motor cortex (M1/PM), while select locations on the hand and forelimb were stimulated. Response changes were quantified as increases and decreases to stimulus-driven activity relative to baseline and analyzed during three
