We determined the magnesium content for two different Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines (EW 36 and CA 46) after transfer to new media for 7 consecutive days. Aliquots of the cell culture were washed and the cell pellet was obtained by centrifugation and lysed with distilled water with and without the addition of 0.25% lanthanum oxide. During toxicology screening of human biological fluids, 4-aminoantipyrine (4-AAP) was detected in 19 patients and identified by two-dimensional TLC and UV spectrophotometry with whole blood concentrations of 4-AAP ranging from 0.4 to greater than 4.9 mg/dL. Of the 19 patients, 15 had received prior treatment at a Mexican health-care facility before transfer to this medical center. We determined zinc, copper, magnesium, and calcium concentrations by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in the plasma of 30 patients hospitalized for treatment of seizures during a period of alcohol withdrawal. We detail the synthesis and purification of a mitochondrial calcium uptake inhibitor, [(OH2)(NH3)4Ru(µ-O)Ru(NH3)4(OH2)]5+. The optimized synthesis of this compound commences from [Ru(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 in 1 M NH4OH in a closed container, yielding a green solution. Purification is accomplished with cation-exchange chromatography. This compound is characterized and verified to be pure by UV-vis and IR spectroscopy. The mitochondrial calcium uptake inhibitory properties are assessed in permeabilized HeLa cells by fluorescence spectroscopy.
