Acoustic analyses on German vowels in read speech, recited speech, and singing.

On the continuum of hyper- and hypoarticulation, speech production is adjusted based on the environment and the listener to ensure intelligibility with minimal articulatory effort. The current study examines 13 German vowels produced by 16 professional female singers in read speech, recited speech, and singing. Stimuli consisted of ten original extracts from German classical art songs. The vowels' first two formants were analyzed, comparing across the three conditions. Furthermore, Euclidean distances were calculated for all vowels. Results generally indicate more hyperarticulation in recited

Long-Term Management of Velopharyngeal Insufficiency and Misarticulation in Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate: Speech Therapy Outcomes.

This report highlights the long-term management of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) and misarticulation in an 18-year-old male with unilateral cleft lip and palate. Despite primary and secondary surgeries, persistent VPI required a speech appliance and intensive therapy to address glottal stops and pharyngeal fricatives. While therapy eliminated these errors, residual VPI continued to impact speech intelligibility. Reassessment revealed that while some misarticulations persisted, the patient retained speech improvements from prior therapy, allowing for partial substitutions of target sounds.

A review of the evaluation and management of velopharyngeal insufficiency in children.

This article highlights the most common causes of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), and discusses routine evaluation and treatment algorithms for the management of VPI in children. VPI is a multifactorial condition that occurs commonly in syndromic and non-syndromic children. The most common features of VPI are audible hypernasal speech, facial grimacing, decreased speech intelligibility, nasal regurgitation, and nasal emission from failure to produce oronasal separation. Work-up of VPI typically involves radiologic and endoscopic testing performed with the assistance of a speech-language pa

Differential effects of speech prostheses in glossectomized patients.

Five patients representing different categories of glossal resection were fitted with prostheses specifically designed to improve speech. Speech recordings made for subjects with and without their prostheses were subjected to a variety of analyses. Prosthetic influence on listeners' judgments of severity level/intelligibility, number of consonants in error, and on the acoustic measure F2 range of vowels was evaluated. Findings indicated that all subjects demonstrated improvement on the speech measures. However, the extent of improvement on each measure varied across speakers and resection cate

Effects of StereoBiCROS on Speech Understanding in Noise and Quality of Life for Asymmetric Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Background and Aim: Asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss is difficult to rehabilitate acoustically. Bilateral amplification may induce binaural interference, while CROS/BiCROS systems provide benefit only when the speech signal reaches the poorer ear. A hybrid approach combining CROS strategy with bilateral acoustic amplification, called Stereophonic Bilateral Contralateral Routing of Signal-StereoBiCROS-has recently emerged. Methods: A one-month home trial was conducted with hearing aids programmed in three listening modes: Stereophonic, BiCROS, and StereoBiCROS. Speech-in-noise perception w

Tinnitus Affects Speech in Noise Comprehension in Individuals With Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a prevalent auditory disorder that frequently co-occurs with hearing loss. It is suggested that tinnitus might have negative impact on speech perception. However, studies thus far have not been able to disentangle tinnitus, hearing loss, and speech in noise intelligibility. We therefore investigated whether there is an association between tinnitus and speech understanding in noise, independent of hearing loss. METHODS: Of 4,211 participants from the population-based Rotterdam Study (mean age 67.8 [SD 8.9], 57.3% female) data was available on tinnitus, pure-tone audiome
