The occurrence of developmental apraxia of speech in a mild articulation disorder: a case study.

Although Developmental Apraxia of Speech (DAS) often is considered a severe communication disorder, speech-language pathology literature supports the idea that DAS also can be exhibited in children with mildly disordered articulation. The case study is that of an elementary age client with a seemingly mild "r" articulation problem but who also presented characteristics consistent with DAS. Awareness of the possible presence of DAS when assessing and planning remediation for clients exhibiting mild articulation problems could increase the effectiveness of our professional services to these chil…

Friedreich ataxia: dysarthria profile and clinical data.

Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is the most frequent recessive ataxia in the Western world. Dysarthria is a cardinal feature of FRDA, often leading to severe impairments in daily functioning, but its exact characteristics are only poorly understood so far. We performed a comprehensive evaluation of dysarthria severity and the profile of speech motor deficits in 20 patients with a genetic diagnosis of FRDA based on a carefully selected battery of speaking tasks and two widely used paraspeech tasks, i.e., oral diadochokinesis and sustained vowel productions. Perceptual ratings of the speech samples ide

Exploring Motor Speech Disorders in Low and Minimally Verbal Autistic Individuals: An Auditory-Perceptual Analysis.

PURPOSE: Motor deficits are widely documented among autistic individuals, and speech characteristics consistent with a motor speech disorder have been reported in prior literature. We conducted an auditory-perceptual analysis of speech production skills in low and minimally verbal autistic individuals as a step toward clarifying the nature of speech production impairments in this population and the potential link between oromotor functioning and language development. METHOD: Fifty-four low or minimally verbal autistic individuals aged 4-18 years were video-recorded performing nonspeech oromot

Speech and Language Presentations of FTLD-TDP Type B Neuropathology.

Four right-handed patients who presented with an isolated impairment of speech or language had transactive response DNA-binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43) type B pathology. Comportment and pyramidal motor function were preserved at presentation. Three of the cases developed axial rigidity and oculomotor findings late in their course with no additional pyramidal or lower motor neuron impairments. However, in all 4 cases, postmortem examination disclosed some degree of upper and lower motor neuron disease (MND) pathology in motor cortex, brainstem, and spinal cord. Although TDP-43 type B patholo

Facilitator Behaviors Leading to Engagement and Disengagement in Aphasia Conversation Groups.

Purpose Researchers have identified features of successful aphasia conversation groups and clinician behaviors leading to engagement and group cohesion. There has been less focus in the literature on facilitator behaviors that hinder participation or result in disengagement. This study aims to explore the behaviors of graduate student facilitators that contribute to and detract from engagement in aphasia conversation groups. Method Data were drawn from 4 conversation group sessions from 2 different university settings. Groups included 1 graduate student facilitator and 3 or more persons with a

Voice Disorder Management Competencies: A Survey of School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists in Nebraska.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this survey was to determine the self-perceived competence levels in voice disorders of practicing school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and identify correlated variables. METHOD: Participants were 153 master's level, school-based SLPs with a Nebraska teaching certificate and/or licensure who completed a survey, including demographic information and a 25-item voice disorders competency checklist. RESULTS: Findings indicated school-based SLPs did not feel particularly competent in their ability to assess and treat students with voice disorders. Only 1 respon

Dynamics of oral language and speech production through neuromodulation: A systematic review of non-invasive brain stimulation in neurodegeneration.

Oral language and speech production analyses are emerging as innovative indicators of neurodegeneration. These components of expressive discourse permit dementia identification at early stages, even in neurodegenerative pathologies with non-dominant linguistic symptomatology. Simultaneously, non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has been described as an effective neuromodulation technique to counter neurodegenerative symptoms. This systematic review assesses whether neuromodulation via NIBS can impact oral expressive discourse through oral language and speech production parameters in neurodege

Characterization of language profile in children with critical congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: While motor and cognitive development in children with congenital heart defects has been well documented over recent decades, language development has received considerably less attention-particularly in French-speaking populations. This study aimed to characterize the language profiles of children with critical congenital heart disease using standardized speech and language assessments and to identify associated vulnerability factors. METHODS: We assessed 33 children aged 5 to 6.5 years, all of whom had undergone cardiac surgery or catheterization before 6 months of age and had n

The "Comprehensive ICF Core Set for Head and Neck Cancer": a Delphi consensus survey among German speaking speech and language therapists.

The "Comprehensive ICF Core Set for Head and Neck Cancer" (ICF-HNC) is an application of the "International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health" (ICF), representing the characteristic spectrum of issues in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). Our primary aim was to evaluate which categories of the ICF-HNC are dealt with by speech and language therapists (SLTs) in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The secondary aim was to identify outcome measures used by SLTs to measure the categories of the ICF-HNC in clinical practice. SLTs experienced in the treatment of HNC patients

Changes in semantic fluency across childhood: Normative data from Australian-English speakers.

PURPOSE: Verbal fluency tests are often used as part of an assessment battery to investigate children's lexical knowledge as well as executive function skills. To date, however, issues surrounding consistency of measurement cloud comparisons across studies, with the developmental performance of Australian-English speaking children also currently lacking. This study tracked verbal fluency development as measured by two semantic fluency tasks that included coding of fluency, clustering and switching type responses. METHOD: Participants included 355 typically developing Australian-English speaki

How acceptable is the use of linguistic-phonological intervention in children with cleft palate? A qualitative study in speech therapists.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Even though evidence for the use of linguistic-phonological intervention approaches in children with a cleft (lip and) palate (CP±L) is still limited, these approaches are being used by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to treat active or compensatory cleft speech disorders in clinical practice. It is, however, unknown to what extent linguistic-phonological intervention is acceptable to SLPs. The aim of this study is to investigate the retrospective acceptability of linguistic-phonological intervention in children with a CP±L from the perspective of SLPs using the theoreti

A Japanese Patient With Progressive Word Deafness and Logoclonia.

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is classified into several types. However, syndromes that do not belong to these typical types of PPA have been reported, such as cases where only progressive apraxia of speech (AOS) is present in the early stages of the disease. Moreover, there have been a few case reports of patients with progressive word deafness complicated with logoclonia as a speech disorder. Herein, we report a case of degenerative disease with phonological paraphasia, AOS, impaired speech sound cognition, and logoclonia with disease progression. The written language comprehension of th

Speech-language pathologists' perceptions of common myths related to deaf and hard of hearing children who use signed language.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have little formal education related to the needs of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children who use a signed language and often report feeling underprepared to work with this population. Although a small subset of SLPs specialize in working with DHH children, the majority of DHH children are served by generalist SLPs without specialized training. We surveyed 50 SLPs (26 self-reported DHH specialists) to better understand SLPs' awareness of common myths or misunderstandings about issues related to DHH children and signed language. For 13/22 statements (59%),
