The Prevalence of Injuries and Traumas in Elite Goalball Players.

BACKGROUND: The last decade has seen the dynamic development of Paralympic sport, including the development of training facilities and training methods that allow for the achievement of results at the highest level in this group. This may be associated with an increased risk of injury and traumas. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and locations of injuries and the types of trauma suffered by goalball players. METHODS: The study covered 43 players (24 women and 19 men) of the Goalball European Championship. A questionnaire survey was conducted. RESULTS: The injuries were reported by

Measuring the Hip Adductor to Abductor Strength Ratio in Ice Hockey and Soccer Players: A Critically Appraised Topic.

Clinical Scenario: Ice hockey and soccer are both dynamic sports that involve continuous, unpredictable play. These athletes consistently demonstrate higher rates of groin strains compared with other contact sports. Measuring the hip adductor/abductor ratio has the potential to expose at-risk players, reduce injury rates, and preserve groin health in players with chronic strains. Focused Clinical Question: What is the clinical utility of measuring the hip adductor/abductor ratio for preseason and in-season ice hockey and soccer players? Summary of Key Findings: Three studies, all of which were

Proprioceptive Training for the Prevention of Ankle Sprains: An Evidence-Based Review.

UNLABELLED: Reference:  Schiftan GS, Ross LA, Hahne AJ. The effectiveness of proprioceptive training in preventing ankle sprains in sporting populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis. J Sci Med Sport. 2015;18(3):238-244. CLINICAL QUESTION: Does the use of proprioceptive training as a sole intervention decrease the incidence of initial or recurrent ankle sprains in the athletic population? DATA SOURCES: The authors completed a comprehensive literature search of MEDLINE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) from inception to October 2013. The reference list

MRI in acute ligamentous injuries of the ankle.

Ankle sprains are the most common lower limb injuries and affect more frequently young athletes; imaging is needed for an accurate diagnosis of such traumatic injuries. The purpose of this review is to analyse the magnetic resonance (MR) findings of both normal and pathological ankle's ligaments; indeed, MRI is the gold standard for the diagnosis of acute traumatic injuries and is useful for differentiation of the causes of ankle instability as well as for pre-operative planning.

[Advances on biomechanics and kinematics of sprain of ankle joint].

Ankle sprains are orthopedic clinical common disease, accounting for joint ligament sprain of the first place. If treatment is not timely or appropriate, the joint pain and instability maybe develop, and even bone arthritis maybe develop. The mechanism of injury of ankle joint, anatomical basis has been fully study at present, and the diagnostic problem is very clear. Along with the development of science and technology, biological modeling and three-dimensional finite element, three-dimensional motion capture system, digital technology study, electromyographic signal study were used for the ba

Acupuncture for treating acute ankle sprains in adults.

BACKGROUND: An acute ankle sprain is a sudden-onset injury of one or more of the ankle ligaments. It is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries in the general population as well as in athletes. In some countries, such as China and Korea, acupuncture is frequently used in the treatment of ankle sprains, either as a single treatment or a secondary intervention accompanied by standard medical treatment. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits and harms) of acupuncture for the treatment of ankle sprains in adults. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma

A comparison of the effects of ankle taping styles on biomechanics during ankle inversion.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to compare the effects of different ankle taping methods on lower leg EMG and subtalar kinematics. METHODS: Twelve healthy volunteers were tested on an inversion platform in one of three taping conditions: non-elastic basketweave, elastic adhesive bandage wrap and non-taped control. Muscle activation and range of motion data were collected during an inversion of 35 degrees using a Biometrics(®) datalogger. Testing was done before and after 30minutes of treadmill running. RESULTS: Significant differences were noted in total inversion, time to peak inversion

Ankle manual therapy for individuals with post-acute ankle sprains: description of a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains are common within the general population and can result in prolonged disablement. Limited talocrural dorsiflexion range of motion (DF ROM) is a common consequence of ankle sprain. Limited talocrural DF ROM may contribute to persistent symptoms, disability, and an elevated risk for re-injury. As a result, many health care practitioners use hands-on passive procedures with the intention of improving talocrural joint DF ROM in individuals following ankle sprains. Dosage of passive hands-on procedures involves a continuum of treatment speeds. Recent evidence suggests both

[Effects of soccer-specific strains on the locomotor system].

PROBLEMS: Soccer as a Stop-and-Go-sport goes along with a high level of physical strain on the locomotor system. Compared to similar kinds of sports, soccer is characterized by a high prevalence of overloads/injuries in the pelvic region. Since soccer frequently involves one-sided shot-training, modifications in the pelvic statics are possible. METHODS: In a pilot study including 15 football-players-FP (age 26.9 +/- 3.1 yrs; 4.4 +/- 0.4 training units/week+ 1 leaque game) the pelvic statics was measured using the 3-d-recording system CMS70 (Zebris, Germany) directly before and after a defined

[Ankle sprains: from diagnosis to management. the physiatric view].

Ankle injuries are the most frequently encountered injuries in clinical practice. They are often managed by general practicians, and not only by orthopaedic or physiatric physicians. This injury is usually non-complicated, but some care should be taken to assure an adequate management and to exclude severe lesions. The stability of the ankle is necessary for functional activity of lower extremity, allowing walking and participation in other high demanding activities like running or jumping. There is a constant concern in adopting the best diagnostic and treatment procedures to enhance the reco

Predicting hamstring strain injury in elite athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Eccentric exercise, where the contracting muscle is lengthened, produces microscopic damage in muscle fibers, and sensations of stiffness and soreness, the next day. These normally resolve within a week. A more major sports injury is the muscle strain. Because strain injuries are known to occur during eccentric contractions, it is hypothesized that the microscopic damage from eccentric exercise can, at times, progress to a muscle strain. As the amount of microscopic damage depends on the muscle's optimum length for active tension, it is further proposed that optimum length is a m

[Repair and reconstruction of post-traumatic instability of the ankle].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the reparative and reconstructive method of post-traumatic lateral instability of the ankle. METHODS: From January 1992 to June 2000, 7 cases of male patients with ankle injury (aged 25-43 years) underwent Wetson-Jones modification. A bone tunnel was drilled through 2.5 cm upside the lateral malleolus tip and talus, and short peroneal tendon was cut to pass the tunnel to fix twining. RESULTS: All patients were followed up 2-10 years, 5 cases mineworkers changed to work on the ground, 2 patients returned to the original work, no traumatic arthritis occurred. Accordin
