Freestanding triboelectric-layer-based nanogenerators for harvesting energy from a moving object or human motion in contact and non-contact modes.

For versatile mechanical energy harvesting from arbitrary moving objects such as humans, a new mode of triboelectric nanogenerator is developed based on the sliding of a freestanding triboelectric-layer between two stationary electrodes on the same plane. With two electrodes alternatively approached by the tribo-charges on the sliding layer, electricity is effectively generated due to electrostatic induction. A unique feature of this nanogenerator is that it can operate in non-contact sliding mode, which greatly increases the lifetime and the efficiency of such devices.

Multi objective moth swarm algorithm for optimizing electric vehicle integration in distribution grids.

The rapid integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into distribution grids introduces significant challenges, including heightened energy losses, voltage instability, and increased operational costs. Traditional optimization methods often address these issues in isolation, failing to balance the complex, multi-objective nature of modern grids with high EV penetration and renewable variability. This paper proposes a mixed-integer multi-objective optimization framework to simultaneously minimize operational costs, energy losses, load shedding, and voltage deviations over a 24-hour horizon. The mod

Perspective-dependent activation of frontoparietal circuits during the observation of a static body effector.

The perspective from which body-related stimuli are observed plays a fundamental role in modulating cerebral activity during the processing of others' bodies and actions. Previous research has shown perspective-dependent cerebral responses during the observation of both ongoing actions and static images of an acting body with implied motion information, with an advantage for the egocentric viewpoint. The present high-density EEG study assessed event-related potentials triggered by the presentation of a forearm at rest before reach-to-grasp actions, shown from four different viewpoints. Through

EMF and health.

Electric and magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the modern society, and concerns have been expressed regarding possible adverse effects of these exposures. This review covers epidemiologic research on health effects of exposures to static, extremely low-frequency (ELF), and radio frequency (RF) fields. Research on ELF fields has been performed for more than two decades, and the methodology and quality of studies have improved over time. Studies have consistently shown increased risk for childhood leukemia associated with ELF magnetic fields, whereas ELF fields most likely are not a risk factor

Effect of intracranial electrical stimulation on dynamic functional connectivity in medically refractory epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore the distributed network effects of intracranial electrical stimulation in patients with medically refractory epilepsy using dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) and graph indicators. METHODS: The time-varying connectivity patterns of dFC (state-based metrics) as well as topological properties of static functional connectivity (sFC) and dFC (graph indicators) were assessed before and after the intracranial electrical stimulation. The sliding window method and k-means clustering were used for the analysis of dFC states, which were character

Switchable Topological Polar Textures in Freestanding Ultrathin Ferroelectric Oxides.

The rapidly expanding field of two-dimensional materials has recently extended to include freestanding complex oxides, opening new opportunities for nanoscale ferroic design. Using first-principles-based atomistic simulations, we demonstrate that ultrathin freestanding ferroelectric layers host a diverse landscape of polar states. Above a critical thickness, electrostatic confinement stabilizes a vortex-labyrinthine regime with liquid-like out-of-plane domains and long-range orientational order, which upon cooling evolves into two nearly degenerate topological configurations: a wave-helix text

Enhanced ordering reduces electric susceptibility of liquids confined to graphene slit pores.

The behaviours of a range of polar and non-polar organic liquids (acetone, ethanol, methanol, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), carbon tetrachloride and water) confined to 2D graphene nanochannels with thicknesses in the range of 4.5 Å to 40 Å were studied using classical molecular dynamics and hybrid density functional theory. All liquids were found to organise spontaneously into ordered layers parallel to the confining surfaces, with those containing polar molecules having their electric dipoles aligned parallel to such surfaces. In particular, monolayers of NMP showed remarkable in-plane orderi

Recognizing emotions in bodies: Vagus nerve stimulation enhances recognition of anger while impairing sadness.

According to the Polyvagal theory, the vagus nerve is the key phylogenetic substrate that supports efficient emotion recognition for promoting safety and survival. Previous studies showed that the vagus nerve affects people's ability to recognize emotions based on eye regions and whole facial images, but not static bodies. The purpose of this study was to verify whether the previously suggested causal link between vagal activity and emotion recognition can be generalized to situations in which emotions must be inferred from images of whole moving bodies. We employed transcutaneous vagus nerve

Electromyography and fatigue during prolonged, low-level static contractions.

Findings from five separate studies of EMG changes and muscle fatigue during prolonged low-level static contractions are summarized, and the possible mechanisms behind the changes are briefly discussed. Sustained static contractions (10%, 7% and 5% MVC) of up to 1 h duration were performed by finger flexors, elbow flexors and extensors, and knee extensors. In one experiment, intermittent static arm pulling (triceps) (10 s contraction and 5 s rest, average work load 14% and 10% MVC) was performed for 7 h. The endurance time for the sustained contractions was around one hour for 10% MVC, and it

Graphene-based porous hydrogels with a tunable piezoresistive response for wearable strain sensing.

This study reports the synthesis of porous hydrogels templated by self-assembled, percolating graphene networks formed through the spontaneous exfoliation of graphite at oil-water interfaces. The resulting graphene-stabilized emulsions yield an open-cell hydrogel architecture that enables efficient stress-dependent modulation of electrical pathways. Compression testing and electrical characterization revealed a pronounced reduction in resistance under strain, producing a robust and reliable piezoresistive response with a gauge factor of approximately 13 at 5% strain. Cyclic compression-relaxat

Currents induced in anatomic models of the human for uniform and nonuniform power frequency magnetic fields.

We have used the quasi-static impedance method to calculate the currents induced in the nominal 2 x 2 x 3 and 6 mm resolution anatomically based models of the human body for exposure to magnetic fields at 60 Hz. Uniform magnetic fields of various orientations and magnitudes 1 or 0.417 mT suggested in the ACGIH and ICNIRP safety guidelines are used to calculate induced electric fields or current densities for the various glands and organs of the body including the pineal gland. The maximum 1 cm(2) area-averaged induced current densities for the central nervous system tissues, such as the brain

Dynamic Conformal Neural Electroactive Biointerfacing Sustains Bioelectronic Coupling for Spinal Cord Repair.

Stable bioelectronic coupling in mechanically active tissues remains challenging because conventional interfaces rely on static architectures that cannot dissipate deformation-induced interfacial stress, resulting in progressive contact failure and signal instability. Here, we report an injectable magnetoelectric hydrogel that forms a dynamic conformal neural electroactive tissue-biointerface (DyCONNECT) with deformable neural tissues. By integrating polydopamine-modified magnetoelectric nanoparticles within a dynamically adaptive conductive network, DyCONNECT combines tissue adhesion, electri

Optimizing energy-efficient grid performance: integrating electric vehicles, DSTATCOM, and renewable sources using the Hippopotamus Optimization Algorithm.

The rapid increase in renewable energy integration and electric vehicle (EV) adoption creates significant challenges for the stability and efficiency of power distribution networks. This study addresses the need for optimized placement and sizing of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCSs), photovoltaic (PV) systems, and Distribution Static Compensators (DSTATCOMs) to enhance grid performance. The motivation for this work arises from the fluctuating nature of renewable energy generation and the unpredictable demands of EV charging, which strain existing infrastructure. To address these chall

Influence of Diameter and Cyclic Mechanical Stimulation on the Beating Frequency of Myocardial Cell-Laden Fibers.

Atrioventricular block (AVB) is a severe disease for pediatric patients. The repetitive operations needed in the case of the pacemaker implantation to maintain the electrical signal at the atrioventricular node (AVN) affect the patient's life quality. In this study, we present a method of biofabrication of multi-cell-laden cylindrical fibrin-based fibers that can restore the electrical signal at the AVN. We used human umbilical vein smooth muscle cells (HUVSMCs), human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and induced pluripotent stem cell cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) cultivated either static

Probabilistic deep learning framework for dynamic carbon emission accounting of electric buses under grid uncertainty.

The electrification of public transit has emerged as a pivotal pathway for deep urban decarbonization. However, existing carbon accounting methods predominantly rely on static grid emission factors and deterministic energy models, often overlooking spatiotemporal variability and uncertainty propagation. To address this limitation, this study establishes a dynamic, uncertainty-aware framework for the carbon accounting of electric bus systems. A hybrid deep learning architecture integrating Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCN), Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) networks, and an Atte

Topical Analgesic Improved or Maintained Ballistic Hip Flexion Range of Motion with Treated and Untreated Legs.

Increased stretch tolerance can contribute to improved range of motion (ROM). Since menthol-based topical analgesics (TopAnalg) suppress pain, they may increase stretch thresholds improving ROM. Other modalities such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and rolling have demonstrated decreased pain sensitivity in the contralateral limb. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a TopAnalg on active and passive ROM of the treated and contralateral (untreated) leg. With a double blind, repeated measures design, 14 university students had a TopAnalg or a placebo gel app

FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra, normal coordinate analysis and ab initio computations of Trimesic acid.

The FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra have been recorded of Trimesic acid (1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid, H3BTC). The molecular structure, conformational stability, geometry optimization, vibrational frequencies have been investigated. The total energy calculations of H3BTC were tried for various possible conformers. The spectra were interpreted with the aid of normal coordinate analysis based on ab initio Hartree-Fock (HF) and density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP) methods and 6-31+G(d,p) basis set level and was scaled using scale factors yielding good agreement between observed and calculated freq

Oscillatory cortico-cortical connectivity during tactile discrimination between dynamic and static stimulation.

Fine sensory modalities play an essential role in perceiving the world. However, little is known about how the cortico-cortical distinguishes between dynamic and static tactile signals. This study investigated oscillatory connectivity during a tactile discrimination task of dynamic and static stimulation via electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings and the fast oscillatory networks across widespread cortical regions. While undergoing EEG recordings, the subject felt an electro-tactile presented by a 3-dot array. Each block consisted of 3 forms of stimulation: Spatio-temporal (dynamic), Spatial (s
