Communicating stereotype-relevant information: is factual information subject to the same communication biases as fictional information?

Factual information is more frequently read and discussed than fictional information. However, research on the role of communication in shaping stereotypes has focused almost exclusively on fictional narratives. In Experiments 1 and 2 a newspaper article containing information about heroin users was communicated along chains of 4 people. No stereotype-consistency bias was observed. Instead, a greater proportion of stereotype-inconsistent information was communicated than was stereotype-consistent or -neutral information. Three further experiments investigated explanations for the difference be

Stereotypic circling behavior in mice with vestibular dysfunction: asymmetrical effects of intrastriatal microinjection of a dopamine agonist.

Bronx Waltzer (bv) mouse, which has been used as a model of hearing and vestibular dysfunction, shows remarkable repetitive circling behavior. This study investigated whether the behavior is caused by the asymmetry of striatal function by observing the behavior of the bv mice following microinjection of dopamine D1 agonist, A68930 into the striatum ipsilaterally and contralaterally to the preferred direction of rotation separately. High dose of the drug induced opposite effects on ipsilateral rotations by the side of injections with statistical significance (p = .0026). These results suggested

Myopathy associated with anti-signal recognition peptide antibodies: clinical heterogeneity contrasts with stereotyped histopathology.

We report three patients with anti-signal recognition particle antibodies who had different presenting clinical pictures, mimicking acute polymyositis, limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, and acute rhabdomyolysis. Muscle biopsies typically showed necrotizing myopathy with little or no inflammation and deposits of membrane attack complex (C5b-9) in endomysial capillaries. The clinical course was severe in two patients and mild in one. The combination of corticosteroid with either an immunosuppressive agent or intravenous immunoglobulins was required to improve the condition of these patients.

An A-B-C model of habit disorders: hair-pulling, skin-picking, and other stereotypic conditions.

Severe hair-pulling is characteristic of trichotillomania, an impulse control disorder not otherwise classified. Other pathological habits, including severe nail-biting and skin-picking, are also prevalent and are potentially diagnosable as stereotypic movement disorder. There is increasing awareness of the morbidity associated with these kind of habit disorders but, to date, relatively few randomized controlled trials of pharmacotherapy or psychotherapy have been undertaken. Advances in the understanding of the underlying cognitive-affective mechanisms driving stereotypies in animals and huma

Stereotypic and self-injurious behavior in rhesus macaques: a survey and retrospective analysis of environment and early experience.

Abnormal behavior in captive rhesus monkeys can range from active whole-body and self-directed stereotypies to self-injurious behavior (SIB). Although abnormal behaviors are common in singly-housed rhesus monkeys, the type and frequency of these behaviors are highly variable across individual animals, and the factors influencing them are equally varied. The purpose of this investigation was to survey abnormal behavior in a large population of rhesus macaques, to characterize the relationship between stereotypies and self-injury, and to identify potential risk factors for these aberrant behavio

Olanzapine for chronic, stereotypic self-injurious behaviour: a pilot study in seven adults with intellectual disability.

Dopamine one (D1) receptor supersensitvity in the corpus striatum is said to be the primary mechanism within the dopamine model proposed for chronic, refractory self-injurious behaviour (SIB), which may explain why conventional neuroleptics have proven largely ineffective. In common with other atypical antipsychotic agents, olanzapine has more affinity for the D1 receptor. The present study explored whether olanzapine could reduce rates of the stereotypic form of chronic SIB, a subtype where dopamine dysfunction is the most likely underlying mechanism. A clinical sample of seven patients with

Methamphetamine-induced neurotoxicity alters locomotor activity, stereotypic behavior, and stimulated dopamine release in the rat.

The neurochemical evidence of methamphetamine (MA)-induced toxicity to dopaminergic nerve terminals is well documented; however, the functional consequences are not clearly defined. The present study was designed to investigate whether MA-induced dopamine depletions affect locomotor activity, stereotypic behavior, and/or extracellular dopamine concentrations in the neostriatum. Male rats were treated with a neurotoxic regimen of MA (10 mg/kg, i.p., every 2 hr for four injections) or vehicle and tested for functional effects 1 week later. Animals that had received the neurotoxic regimen of MA s

DSM-IV stereotypic movement disorder: persistence of stereotypies of infancy in intellectually normal adolescents and adults.

BACKGROUND: As part of a broader series of studies on unwanted repetitive behaviors, DSM-IV stereotypic movement disorder (SMD) was examined in an intellectually normal population. Repetitive nonfunctional behaviors, or stereotypies, are expressed during early normal development but have not been described in adults without severe psychiatric or intellectual impairment. METHOD: Lifetime and current psychiatric Axis I diagnoses were determined by structured and clinical interviews in subjects who responded to a newspaper advertisement that specifically mentioned rocking and head banging. Clonidine sensitizes mice for apomorphine-induced stereotypic gnawing: antagonism by neuroleptics and cholecystokinin-like peptides.

In mice sensitized for apomorphine by either scopolamine or teflutixol, clonidine antagonized the antistereotypic effect of ceruletide and haloperidol. The same effect of clonidine occurred in normal mice with methylphenidate-induced gnawing. In naive mice, clonidine alone had a sensitizing effect for the action of apomorphine leading to wire-gnawing. Yohimbine and rauwolscine (but not corynanthine) antagonized this effect of clonidine. The gnawing-inducing effect of methylphenidate was also enhanced by clonidine but not to the same extent as that of apomorphine. The stereotypic effect of apom

The mediating role of interpersonal curiosity in the association between adolescents' adherence to masculine stereotypes and perceived friendship quality.

While prior research has found that adolescents who adhere more strongly to masculine stereotypes (i.e., emotional stoicism, autonomy, and physical toughness) in their friendships tend to report lower quality friendships, the mechanism underlying this association remains unclear. Emerging theory suggests that adherence to such masculine stereotypes may be associated with reduced interpersonal curiosity, which could, in turn, relate to lower perceived friendship quality. This analysis investigates the mediating role of interpersonal curiosity in the association between adherence to masculine st

Light cycle phase and sex shape swimming exercise responses and stereotyped behaviors in wild-type mice.

Exercise provides broad health benefits, including improved emotional well-being and cognitive function. Emerging evidence suggests that exercising at different times during the day can have differential effects. However, how circadian phase and sex influence behavioral and physiological responses to exercise remains unclear. To address this question, we examined male and female wild-type mice maintained in either regular (REG, lights on/off at 7AM/7PM) or inverted (INV, lights off/on at 10AM/10PM) light/dark cycles. Mice were subjected to daily 20-min group swimming exercise sessions for 3 we

Enhancing Recognition of Stereotyped Movements in ASD Children Through Action Pattern Mining and Multi-Channel Fusion.

Stereotyped movements play a crucial role in diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, recognizing them poses challenges, due to limited data availability and the movements' specificity and varying duration. To support in-depth analysis of ASD children's movements, we constructed the ACSA653 dataset, comprising 653 videos across six classes of stereotyped movements. This dataset surpasses existing ones in both scale and category. To improve the recognition of stereotyped movements, we propose APMFNet, a model that integrates three modules: Visual Motion Learning (VML), Skeleton Relat

Stereotypic immune response in Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis infection among different Swiss caprine genotypes.

Paratuberculosis is an infection with Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) causing chronic enteritis in domestic and wild ruminants worldwide. In goats, the infection is caused by C (cattle)-type and S (sheep)-type strains. In this study, the correlation between different MAP strains and histomorphological lesions in the small and large intestines, as well as the mesenteric lymph nodes, in Swiss goats (Caprae aegagrus hircus) was investigated. Ten Swiss caprine MAP isolates were characterized using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzymatic restriction-based single nucleotide pol

Sex Stereotypes and Child Physical Abuse: Mediating Effects of Attitudes on Beliefs about Consequences for Abusive Parents.

We hypothesized that (a) sex stereotypes would influence individuals' attitudes toward and beliefs about physically abusive parents and (b) these attitudes would mediate the connection between sex stereotypes and beliefs. Participants read one of four scenarios in which (a) sex of parents and sex of children were systematically varied while (b) holding constant the actions of parents and children as well as surrounding circumstances. Participants then expressed their attitudes about those parents and their beliefs about appropriate consequences for these parents. As expected, participants held

Repeating patterns: Predictive processing suggests an aesthetic learning role of the basal ganglia in repetitive stereotyped behaviors.

Recurrent, unvarying, and seemingly purposeless patterns of action and cognition are part of normal development, but also feature prominently in several neuropsychiatric conditions. Repetitive stereotyped behaviors (RSBs) can be viewed as exaggerated forms of learned habits and frequently correlate with alterations in motor, limbic, and associative basal ganglia circuits. However, it is still unclear how altered basal ganglia feedback signals actually relate to the phenomenological variability of RSBs. Why do behaviorally overlapping phenomena sometimes require different treatment approaches-f

Amble Gait EEG Points at Complementary Cortical Networks Underlying Stereotypic Multi-Limb Co-ordination.

BACKGROUND: Walking is characterized by stable antiphase relations between upper and lower limb movements. Such bilateral rhythmic movement patterns are neuronally generated at levels of the spinal cord and brain stem, that are strongly interconnected with cortical circuitries, including the Supplementary Motor Area (SMA). OBJECTIVE: To explore cerebral activity associated with multi-limb phase relations in human gait by manipulating mutual attunement of the upper and lower limb antiphase patterns. METHODS: Cortical activity and gait were assessed by ambulant EEG, accelerometers and videorec

Challenging the Stereotypes: Unexpected Features of Sexual Exploitation among Homeless and Street-Involved Boys in Western Canada.

Research about the sexual exploitation of homeless and street-involved boys is limited and often combined with that of girls. As aggregation can distort unique issues among genders which are exploited, this study provides information about the context of exploitation for homeless boys. Boys participated in the anonymous, multi-city British Columbia (BC), Canada Homeless and Street-Involved Youth Health paper surveys of 2006 and 2014. Measures included questions about trading sex for money, shelter, or other consideration; age first exploited; for whom; where they were living when first traded
