Ultraviolet exposure of competitors during a Tokyo Olympic Sailing Regatta Test Event.

BACKGROUND: Overexposure to sunlight is the main cause of skin cancer. Photoprotection practices and sunburn play a crucial role in skin cancer prevention. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to quantify the risk of sun exposure and to evaluate photoprotection practices in Spanish sailors during Olympic competitions. METHODS: Solar daily ultraviolet (UV) radiation cycle, personal UV dosimetry, photoprotection practices and sunburn checking were followed during three consecutive days of competition among sailors from the Spanish Olympic Sailing Team during a Tokyo Olympic Regatta Test Event. RESULT…

Comparison of UV-induced skin changes in sun-exposed vs. sun-protected skin- preliminary evaluation by reflectance confocal microscopy.

BACKGROUND: UV radiation (UVR) represents the main risk factor for skin cancer. Sunscreens are commonly used to prevent acute and chronic ef … M. RESULTS: RCM allowed the detection of morphological changes induced by UV including spongiosis, sunburn cells, micro-vesicles and blood vessel dilatation. The appearance of sunburn cells and micro-vesicles was depending on the dose of UV-B and on the individual susceptibility of the study participants. CONCLUSION: RCM seems to be beneficial for the n …

Irradiance-dependent UVB Photocarcinogenesis.

Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun may lead to photocarcinogenesis of the skin. Sunscreens were used to protect the skin by reducing UVB irradiance, but sunscreen use did not reduce sunburn episodes. It was shown that UVB-induced erythema depends on surface exposure but not irradiance of UVB. We previously showed that irradiance plays a critical role in UVB-induced cell differentiation. This study investigated the impact of irradiance on UVB-induced photocarcinogenesis. For hairless mice receiving equivalent exposure of UVB radiation, the low irradiance (LI) UVB treated mice showed mor…

The evaluation of possible melanoma risk groups of patients in a series of pigmented naevi. Clinical and histological intercorrelations.

The trends of the clinical/histological intercorrelations in two series of pigmented naevi have been compared. One series of naevi represents patients who are habitual sunbathers and/or who have travelled to Southern sunny climates. The other series includes naevi from easily sunburned patients. The sunburner-group is correlated to histological features such as mitoses, atypia and fibrosis of the tumour as well as to an irregular/atypical tumour type. Such trends are not found in the other target group. The sunburners have a poor ability to suntan, while the sunbather group includes good sunta…

The impact of Sun Solutions educational interventions on select health belief model constructs.

The purpose of this study was to offer the Sun Solutions intervention to operating engineers (N = 232) to decrease sun exposure and skin cancer. The majority (82%) of the engineers worked outside between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., 4 to 5 hours a day; 81.4% reported more than one sunburn during the past year and 70% sometimes or never used sunscreen compared to 30% who wore sunscreen approximately 50% or more of the time. Most reported that the intervention was helpful (97%), most were satisfied (96%) with the intervention, and 84% expressed a future intention to use sunscreen. Regarding sun protectiv…

Ultraviolet B irradiation of skin induces mast cell degranulation and release of tumour necrosis factor-alpha.

In the 'sunburn' response in skin, dermal blood vessels are activated and traffic of dendritic Langerhans' cells altered. While these changes have been attributed to the cytokine TNF-alpha, the source of this acutely released TNF has not been identified. This report demonstrates that the 'sunburn' response, both in vivo and in vitro, is accompanied by rapid degranulation of cutaneous mast cells, with consequential release of intracellular stores of TNF. Epidermal keratinocytes were only minor contributors to local TNF production. Expression of the TNF-inducible CD62E (E-selectin/ELAM-1) and CD…

The untold story of the scorching sun-A wake up call for sun protection.

Despite extensive warnings from health authorities regarding the dangers of direct sunlight exposure, most people still turn to sun bathing to get a golden tan. Unfortunately, that pleasant tan appearance is often lost because of over exposure to sunlight, resulting in painful red sunburns. In this paper we are reporting a case with significant sunburn injuries that required hospitalization and treatment in a burn center. Concurrently a pilot study was conducted to assess the knowledge about sun protection among the adult population and the results are discussed. The results obtained from the …

Patterns of persistent DNA damage associated with sun exposure and the glutathione S-transferase M1 genotype in melanoma patients.

Solar radiation can lead to changes affecting DNA metabolism resulting in loss of DNA integrity. Skin specimens obtained from melanoma patients treated at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center were used to study patterns of DNA fragmentation using the comet assay and levels of deletions in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) using real-time PCR. Skin specimens were classified according to the glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) genotype (either wild type [WT] or null) and patient sunburn history. GSTM1 null individuals with a sunburn history showed increased levels of both DNA fragmentation by com…

Pefloxacin and ciprofloxacin increase UVA-induced edema and immune suppression.

BACKGROUND: Quinolone antibiotics are popularly prescribed antibiotics because of their wide antibacterial spectrum and lowered bacterial resistance. Quinolone antibiotics are one of the well-known photosensitizers that induce phototoxicity. Their role in photocarcinogenesis has been suggested in some studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mice were treated with two quinolone antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, which is less phototoxic, and pefloxacin, which is more phototoxic) to study the effect of the antibiotics on sunburn and immune suppression by ultraviolet A (UVA) irradiation. The effects of a combin…

Ultraviolet recall associated with etoposide and cyclophosphamide therapy.

Ultraviolet recall (UR) or sunburn reactivation is an infrequently reported phenomenon. It is characterized by an erythematous eruption in the distribution of previous ultraviolet-induced sunburn. The timing of the eruption correlates well with the speculation that it is induced by the administration of a chemotherapeutic agent(s). The case of a young man who developed UR after treatment with etoposide (VP16) and cyclophosphamide is reported.

Prevalence of sun protection behaviors in Hispanic youth residing in a high ultraviolet light environment.

Although rates of late-stage melanoma are rising in Hispanics, particularly those living in high ultraviolet light environments, little is known about the prevalence of sun protective behaviors in Hispanic children. We analyzed baseline data including frequency of sunburn, sun protective behaviors, level of U.S. acculturation, and skin phototype from a cross-sectional survey of 2003 Hispanic elementary school children in Los Angeles, California, who participated in a skin cancer prevention intervention. Although the Hispanic children reported frequently engaging in some sun protective behavior…

Improving sun-protection behavior among children: results of a cluster-randomized trial in Italian elementary schools. The "SoleSi SoleNo-GISED" Project.

A history of sunburns in early life nearly doubles the risk of developing malignant melanoma in adulthood. From 2001 to 2004, we conducted a cluster-randomized trial of an educational intervention to reduce sunburn rates (primary outcome) and improve sun-protection behavior (secondary outcome) in schoolchildren. A total of 122 Italian primary schools (grades 2 and 3) were randomized to receive, or not, an intervention consisting of an educational curriculum at school, conducted by trained teachers, which included the projection of a short video and the distribution of booklets to children and …
